Jimquisition (July 21) - The Xbox One: A Lying Failure Machine

Don't forget an Uncharted 4 teaser that didn't show much more than last year's title reveal.

Sony should be ashamed of how they handled E3 this year. They basically came riding a wave of launch hype, and hoped that would be enough to convince people they won.

That's pretty much how I saw it too. I didn't see this sentiment in the press though, at all. Oh well.

I have to admit, I don't really see the attraction of an apology. I prefer to see action, not platitudes... and we have actually seen action.

Actions while blaming consumers for basicly being Luddites, unwilling to embrace their 'digital future'

Sure.

Having a disappointing E3 press conference (which for most companies is usually the norm) because Sony didn't show the games you wanted to see, is NOT comparable to the things Jim is ranting about. Is that so hard to get?

PRISM, that is what Microsoft has done

The time for an apology is long passed now, I think. They needed to do it when they started dumping the 180 stuff. If they do it now it will only be to try and save face.

I fully agree with Jim here. They tried to sell us bullshit, praised it's anti-consumer "features" and then reversed them without apology when PS4 preoder numbers exploded after E3.

Xbone will forever be tainted by this colossal fuckup, but I don't think the MS will count it as a failure. It is selling good enough for now, and they even have chance to win US territory in a few years with good management.

It seems like a lot of people did not watch the video or partake in discussion related to the video.

I thought the overwhelming consensus of "the press" was that Nintendo "won" E3..

I think the fans dragged the press to that point after the fact. I'm glad for that. I didn't see anyone really saying anything negative about Sony.

I'm not a fan of MS at all now, but I thought they did more this year to put on a good show.

As I said, you can still use voice commands to navigate the UI right? You can navigate TV channels and use Kinect to skype chat with family and friends right? All the stuff that was advertised still works right?

You look at the Xbone box with Kinect bundled and you think:

A) Yeah, that's worth it = You buy it

B) That's not worth it = You don't buy it.

Removing Kinect from the box 6 months later or whatever it was doesn't retroactively invalidate that initial value judgement.

What about option C? I simply want to buy an xbox one to play games. I don't care about that other crap and only about the games. Thats all my ps3/ps4/x360/wiiu etc are used for. Just to play games and not any of the extra features. You seem to think that everyone that bought a X1 before the sku less version did so because they wanted Kinect when the fact is some people simply wanted to play xbox one games. How hard is it to understand that? A lot of people don't give a damn about the kinect and only sucked up paying for it because Microsofts stance on the peripheral was that it was here to stay. Have you ever bought any other electronic and opted for the cheaper version because you didn't need that extra fluff? Well kinect was that extra fluff but Microsoft lied and said it was mandatory.

If you were able to splice out the lull in Sony's E3 weren't Microsoft's and Sony's E3s very similar? And really what does this years E3 have to do with this discussion anyway?

I didn't say they are comparable. I'm saying that reveling in the past like this is not super helpful if it blinds you to the present.

It's good to remember the past, but not if it blinds you to changes.

The press likes to create a "narrative." And oftentimes the narrative can last years after it is no longer reality.

Jim's most vocal audience are PC gamers...

You said his audience on the whole are not Xbox fans, that has nothing to do with the most vocal of his audience being PC gamers does it? By suggesting he is bashing the Xbox to cater to his audience, you are suggesting his audience are Sony fans no?

You have no basis to declare what his fans preferences are in any direction. That was simply a sentence to dismiss his critique.

I usually agree with Jim's opinion, but it seems is trying to hard in this video. I find the notion of videogame companies "in a moral quest" rather silly, coorporations are a-moral by very definition, they are not here to be "honest", they are here to make money.

MS is just reacting to the market, they put out a product that wasn't selling, they are turning the ship in the right direction reacting to the market with somewhat good results. Sony did the last thing last gen: remember getting 2 jobs?, rumble controller is "last gen"? no achievements at launch because reasons...

Im somewhat satisfaced with my xbone, at least it has some actual exclusives games that I've enjoy.

Indeed, but the overall failure of Sony was glossed over almost completely.

maybe because it wasn't an 'overall failure'? Not everyone thinks of things in hyperbolic absolutes. All of the damn press conferences (outside of Nintendo's innovative treehouse stuff, and EA's wierd prototype shit) were the damn same. I think the media AND for the most part fans came away the same overall "is E3 even necessary?" feeling.

Coming to the show with what I'd describe as "little to show, with way too much time to show it".

It was a boring, uneventful conference. Is that really something that is deserving of any sort of expose or "calling out"? Especially when MS, Ubi and EA all pretty much had the same type of showings? E3 is what it is. The real problem is people need to stop setting themselves up for disappointment and then getting mad at Sony for not announcing Crash Bandicoot 5 made by Naughty Dog.

What guarantee do you have that Sony won't infuse many of their DRM policies into the PS4 which they hold specific patents for?

You're using a pretty lame logical fallacy.

Can you point out what exactly is major upcoming Triple A content by Sony for 2014? And how exactly Microsoft is "pathetic" in comparison?

It's one thing to have opinions and preferences but blatantly trolling seems more pathetic.

That isn't blatant trolling when I am speaking to my personal preferences.

And I referenced all three consoles so why single out Sony?

Are you just looking to fight?

Your option C is part of option A.

If you don't want Kinect, but the launch lineup was appealing enough to make the console worthwhile then people bought it. There are plenty of people on GAF who bought an Xbone and don't have Kinect plugged in.

If there were people who wanted an Xbone but didn't want to pay the extra money for Kinect, you know what they could do? Not buy it.

Nobody got screwed here, nobody was forced to buy the Xbone against their will, but you keep on banging that drum.

Indeed, but the overall failure of Sony was glossed over almost completely.
It's not like the MS presser was better and showed more than Sony's presser.
So if you think Sony's conference was a failure, I can't even imagine what you are thinking about Microsofts "CG 2016" conference.

Coming to the show with what I'd describe as "little to show, with way too much time to show it".

I can agree with the "too much time to show it", but I'd say focusing on content that is soon to arrive is better than showing us super early stuff like a 2016 Crackdown.

Indeed, but the overall failure of Sony was glossed over almost completely.

I have a feeling No Man's Sky and Bloodborne (Destiny to a lesser extent), caused the press to gloss over the weaker parts of Sony's conference and just give it a neutral rating. Still, I don't think I would care nearly as much if they didn't show it in movie theaters. You'd think they'd have something earth-shattering to announce since they had that stage, but nothing really came of it.

How many xbox one owners do you think would of bought a kinectless sku it was a launch option?

I think a fair mix of both is acceptable. I mean, realistically, when do you think Uncharted 4 is coming? I'm guessing October 2015 at the earliest.

I guess I feel the system is pointless in relation to its original vision, and therein lies the problem - at least for me - is that you're still buying a box that was made to be something else first.

Last I saw, Quantum Break was still kinda up in the air, so thanks for the update.

As for the Halo TV series, quite frankly, I'll believe it when I see it. Getting pushed back during development isn't a good sign, especially when the studio that was going to help get it made no longer exists.

Nancy Tellem and a couple others are staying on until these projects are complete, plus it's more than likely Spielberg would use his own production team on it. ShowTime coming on board is most likely a way of getting a bigger audience to broadcast to.

On a similar note, Jim stated he unplugged Kinect from his XB1 virtually straight away and it functioned just fine so one has to assume he'd fall into that bracket.

Did he purchase the console himself or was it donated? I find that relevant because as far as I can see videos like this seem to promote the stance of avoiding Xbox products and praise for____ reason(s) yet when Microsoft were at their supposed worst a purchase was made which says that the consumer was happy with the product offered. Seems to be somewhat contradictory.

Perhaps I'm over or under thinking things though. Feeling worse for wear today.

I have to admit, I don't really see the attraction of an apology; I have an inherent mistrust of them, much like the mistrust I have of pre-release claims. I prefer to see action, not platitudes... and we have actually seen action.
Phil Spencer's every interview and even his first video was pretty much an apology tour and a course correction for exactly what the hardcore gamer's want.

Gamers: Talk is cheap Phil. I'll believe it when I see it.

Kinect removed
$400
Xbox Live App Paywall Removed
ID@Xbox expanded and giving out a lot of free devkits and free Unity support
Bring back classics like Phantom Dust, pushing Killer Instinct Season 2
Halo Master Chief Collection for $60
Fully demoing Cloud Compute in real time and using it extensively for a major Crackdown reboot
Funding a brand new exclusive IP with Platinum Games
Xbox Entertainment Division producing TV content shut down (without any effect to any games like Quantum Break or Halo MCC).
Monthly OS Updates that are checking off all the major fan requests and even adding things like 3D BluRays support

"Gamers": Well they're still deceitful shits and they spin everything and I want them grovelling at my feet begging for forgiveness.

Uncharted 4
LittleBigPlanet 3
Bloodborne
The Order 1886
No Man's Sky
Entwined
Let it Die
Driveclub
Grim Fandango remake
Infamous First Light

Looks like a pretty solid lineup to me. And considering PS4 STILL managed to be the top selling console in June (even against Mario Kart and an XBO price drop) I don't think it was much of a failure.

Three things:

1.) Uncharted 4 was a teaser. Heck, it was barely a teaser.

2.) Grim Fandango was not shown. At all. It was named, and they had a photo of Tim. That's it.

3.) Drive Club was not part of their press conference.

Everything you listed is only happening because they're getting their asses kicked. It's great that it's happening, but it's not out of an act of benevolence, it's out of an act of desperation and complete course correction.

Why does a press conference matter? Especially in comparison to the things talked about in this video? Especially when their conference was par for the course for what the other major press conferences were like. What "media pass" was given that wasn't given to everyone else?

At least they had in engine footage for UC4 which is more than what one can say for a majority of XB1 exclusive announcements which were mostly CGI teasers.

Because we're discussing Sony's poor E3 showing? The press conference is the "face" of E3 for Sony and Microsoft with regards to most gamers.

At least they had in engine footage for UC4 which is more than what one can say for a majority of XB1 exclusive announcements which were mostly CGI teasers.

Who cares if it was in-engine? Nothing was really shown.

I don't understand this viewpoint. "Gamers" hated everything about the X1 when it was first announced/released. Now that Microsoft has reversed pretty much all of those things people are still pissed? Is not getting a verbal "I'm sorry" seriously what people are still upset about?
