Nvidia Shield Thread

Kind of wish I had gone Nvidia for my card. Currently running an AMD 7850, don't really want to upgrade since I just got it late last year.

Any rumors floating around of a new Shield coming out? I just got a new video card and I want to try this out but I don't know if I should just wait for the new version.

Only rumors I've heard is that the next shield is going to be a tablet with controller. But nothing confirmed.

get the shield now - this thing really is impressive with all the emus, playing pc games outside of your house network, etc. It's really good. Buy it used on ebay to save.

So I've ignored the Shield since the start, but now that I've realized that I do most of my gaming on my handhelds at my place, it is starting to intrigue me. I have a laptop with a 680M, so I believe the streaming should work.

What's the deal with the compatibility though? At this time, can I stream any game I play onto the Shield? Or am I limited to just a few games that are mentioned in the OP?

pretty much any program can be streamed - you just need to add the exe in the geforce program.

Anyone know why controls wouldn't be working from the Shield in streaming mode? Officially supported games and Steam big pictures don't respond at all to button presses.

Also, I have no streaming / Shield setting/options in Nvidia GeForce Experience.

My Shield should arrive soon. Is it still recommended not to update to 4.4? It's preowned so I have no idea if it'll be updated already but I suspect not as it's hardly been used.

Which controllers? They worked fine for me (Ps3's via USB and built in).

The Shield controller itself, when streaming games, no commands are transferred.

I did notice that with todays 340.52 I now have Shield options in GeForce Experience, but I've not messed with the Shield yet.

4.4 works great for me, just Root it with TowelRoot V1 so that you can save anywhere in the SD card and for other goodies.

Just got my Shield and was initially disappointed that I upgraded to Kit Kat due to the SD card issues and horrible slowdown on certain emulators, however TowelRoot V1 worked great.

Got SuperSu on, SD card fix done, and setCPU solved the speed issues.

Neat device. Paid $105 at GameStop after some trade-ins and a gift card.

If anyone is thinking about updating to Update 82, don't. I'm having multiple problems with Gamestream, and the Shield is running very hot with heavy battery drain.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with remote stream since the update? I can't get it to work. Didn't change anything and now my PC will display the game but my shield just sounds and errors out. Worked perfect before and still works when on the same network but diff networks don't work. Wtf

The heat is a bit crazy for sure. I turn mine off when I go to charge it...

One the plus side, the latest update fixed the emulator slow down issues.

My connection since the update has been hit or miss. The weirdest part is I'm not getting any sound when I remote Gamestream. Never an issue prior to the update. I've had it try to connect and fail, resulting in a crash and blue screen error in my PC. Unfortunately, I'm packing it up until they fix this issue. Gamestreaming was the main reason I bought the thing.

Hey all, just got my Nvidia shield portable and I ABSOLUTELY love it.

Anyone have any native Shield games that they recommend? I was a huge fan of the original Dungeon Defenders and would like to try out the android version.

Posted this in the steam thread but it didn't gain any traction. gonna ask in here as well:

anyone using a nvidia shield portable for remote play? How does it work compared to a PS4->Vita when it comes to remote play? Thinking of getting one during the holidays if it drops to around $100 just for whenever im at my GFs house and she's passed out (we have opposite schedules).

It works very well for me. Technical analysis have concluded that, given the appropriate hardware, the streaming is considerably better than PS4's.

I'm using one at home and it works well. However, there *are* things you need to look out for like distance, signal quality and interference.

For fun, I did try streaming with my Shield connected to Ethernet and it worked well.

Be ready for some troubleshooting nights because some updates can break your setup.

Yeah, that was my fear. I'd rather it be as simple as possible and to not have to mess around with several settings in the game, the shield, and my network to get it going. I guess ill hold until they get it working a bit better. thanks!

So I posted earlier regarding the most recent update and all my troubles with remote stream. They updated GFE and the shield hub app since then and that seemed to iron out all my issues. Right now my pc is at my office at work and so I remote stream to my house. Since it has been working well, I can tell you it's like magic. The lag is undetectable and it's in beautiful 720p on my shield portable screen. For me, it blows ps4 remote pay out of the water, and I love the full sized controller built into the portable. I mostly play shield gamestream optimized games, but you can stream any game through steam. The NVIDIA grid beta has now extended throughout the U.S. (not just San Jose), and it works well too. The portable is also a fantastic emulation device. I have had my ups and downs with the device, but right now I feel like Nvidia is close to ironing out the wrinkles. I'm very happy with the purchase overall.

Dungeon Defenders 2 on out and is supposed to be Shield Optimized.

Sweet, that's definitely on my list of android games to buy. I like how most of the games are 10$ or less. I'm also looking forward to buying Trine 2 as well.

I currently have Dead Trigger 2, Walking Dead season 1, Air Attack HD, Bardbarian, Sonic Racing, Meltdown, Brutal Doom, and Radiant defense.

I'm kind of eyeing Half-Life 2 (already beat it when it first came out), San Andreas (I heard the controls are a little bit wonkey), Modern Combat 5, Mass Effect infiltrator, and ShadowGun.

Anyone else have any Nvidia Shield optimized games they recommend? Thanks!

Sonic 1/2/CD are amazing conversions that somehow surpass the MD originals. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and Virtua Tennis are all solid ports too and all of them are optimized for Shield controls.

My Shield is basically a Sega & Retroarch machine at this point.

Ah thanks! I had a Sega Dreamcast and I really enjoyed it but I'm actually looking for new experiences that I have never played before for Android.

I found NBA Jam to work perfectly with the Shield control mapper, may as well have been shield optimized. Looks great too

Not a sports fan unfortunately, I do enjoy NFL Blitz though when I was a kid!

Really debating on whether to get the Shield or the Shield tablet. Any thoughts? How well does playing games on the tablet work? I think I might rather have the tablet for every day usage, but I really like the integrated controller with the regular shield, and I would imagine playing games on that would be much easier due to the form factor.

You have to ask yourself what do you really need the device for, as in, will you use it more for gaming or for Android App usage? If its for gaming, get the Shield, Otherwise the Tablet.

Having to find somewhere to place the tablet is very annoying when playing on the go.

Using Android apps on the Shield is kind of annoying with the "controller" on the way.

I personally almost never use android apps on my Shield, I use it exclusively for Streaming. If you are buying a Shield because you want to get heavy Android usage out of it, get the tablet.

Anyone try remote streaming Shadow of Mordor yet? My understanding is that it's not optimized yet. Curious as to the performance. Seems like the perfect game for the shield.

Tried yesterday but havent been able to "play", just ran the benchmarks a couple of times.

For some reason the game doesnt give me to option to set it to 1280*720, only 1280*1024, weird.

Also, the game is very demanding, getting around 20fps with everything on Medium with a 2600k and a GTX 650.

So I got one of those tmobile ac1900 routers (didn't even have to pay the deposit and they sent me 2 for some reason lol) and wow, what a difference. Gamestream actually works for me now lol.

Anyway I was trying Dolphin and while the emulator boots up and looks great, the Shield seems to think I'm in virtual mouse mode or something. The gamestream UI stays up all the time (where it says press Y to show the keyboard, RS to control mouse etc) and I can't get it to go away. Dolphin still recognizes the dpad but the buttons don't work because they end up triggering the Shield UI functions. Any way to fix this? Dolphin used to work just fine for streaming?

Edit:
Nevermind. Just found out about limelight and controls work perfect that. That and full 1080p streaming! Looks amazing on the Shield's screen

How do you guys tend to find third person games on the shield? My playing habits have changed a lot over the last year or so, and looking at getting one of these so I can play the games I want, but socially on the couch without hogging the tv or hunkering down at the desk in the corner. However, during my experience with the PS4 & Vita remote play set up, I've sometimes found third person games like assassin's creed look a little too small, or like the camera is a little too zoomed out, as devs obviously assumed people would play on a bigger screen. I don't really want to dump £180-200 on a device where only some genres are viable so any input would be great!

I've played Batman: AC, Max Payne 3, and Final Fantasy XIV on the shield. I have no problems at all with the perspective. It's great! I have not played Assassin's Creed, so I can't speak to that particular franchise.

I'm going to LA this Christmas, so naturally thinking of picking up some electronics/gaming stuff on the cheap. The Shield is only £120 which is a steal compared to UK prices. I was thinking of getting a PSTV but this can do PS1 and PSP games even better right? Plus it has HDMI out. Sounds like the perfect portable emulation device.

That price probably outweighs waiting on a Shield 2 right?

Hey guys, thinking of looking at one of these for christmas. If my desktop is running on a wireless connection, will my gamestreaming be janky?

Guys I just won a Shield portable in an auction for AUS$130 what have I done? Is that a good price? I was mostly thinking for classic console emulation, I don't have a grunty nvidia GPU.

Has anyone gotten PS4 streaming working on their Shield Portable? If so are all the buttons working as expected, like R3 and L3?

I just got it working with the new Android Version of Remote Play! It's awesome and will replace my Vita as my remote play handheld of choice if I can figure how to get all the dang buttons from showing up on the screen.

Does anyone know a way?

I had this problem too. Your Shield will automatically update if you leave it on for a few days.. It just updated the OS from Google Play and had GRID installed. Going to the Google Play store won't work.
