And this thing, which is 4395x1080.

I hope they fixed the compressed audio for H4 cutscenes because damn, it always was a bummer when a cutscene started and the quality dropped like a rock.

Great discussion in the Halo community from a guy called Chaos Theory, a well-known Halo community member within the competitive Halo community.

His thoughts on Halo design and specifically game design, is amazing. If you have time, give it a listen. He had some really great thoughts and points on the direction of Halo, where it came from, and what it's become.

hoping for this

I dunno. There was never too much grinding before except in Halo 4, but yeah I think most people would prefer just having everything unlocked especially since per 343's intended playstyle you're going to be jumping back and forth between games anyhow rather than really focusing.

It's funny that this used to be breath taking to me. Hopefully they don't mess up the graphical upgrade for this level in H2A, I want to be wowed again like I was in 2004 by this very same level.

I'm not particularly concerned. Even with CEA while I didn't like some of the design decisions they made, the vistas were beautiful. H2A seems to be a bit tighter in terms of fidelity to the original from what we've seen, so I expect we'll definitely get some awesome views from those gondolas.

But the Forerunner stuff was all over designed in CEA, that's what gets me worried. I'm also worried they will replaced the mossy stone Forerunner stuff with shiny grey metal.

After really not enjoying myself with the multiplayer portion of the Destiny beta I have a super huge craving to play Halo now... and I sold my 360 and all my 360 games to get an Xbone for a low price. November come faster

I've always had that craving. Halo 3 was the first online multiplayer game I played and it pretty much ruined every other multiplayer game for me. I've tried to extensively play Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Battlefield BC2, 3 and 4 and, more recently, Destiny but they just bore and frustrate me. Dunno why I keep buying them.

Mind you, I had the same reaction to Reach and Halo 4 so I think the nostalgia plays the biggest part. Though it could also be the fact that those games moved away from the original Halo formula (no AAs or custom loadouts etc) and emulated Call of Duty in many ways. That's why I'm looking forward to getting into Halo 2 multiplayer.

60fps 1080p Halo CE and Halo 2 will be hella sexy.

If only they make a title update to Halo 3 and remove the random BR spread, then we'd have a great Halo 3 game running at 60fps and 1080p.

Can't wait for HCE!!! The best Halo, Period.

There were 40+ others in the most recent batch.
I am kinda done spamming this topic with my shots. I will also post any special ones like panoramas or choice shots that I believe are the best in this topic, but the rest will be posted here in an album.

I think 343/Certain Affinity should consider adding a screenshot tool with proper export options (full sized PNGs/100% jpegs) to the MCC in a future update. I'd love to take some proper shots of this series.

VB I just wanna say you suck rule. Seeing those shots really just reminds me of how beautiful Halo 2 was. It also makes the wait to see what it will look like given the visual over haul so goddamn much harder. Hence you seriously SUCK kick ass.

lol

Keep posting them. lol

Stinkels, would love your thoughts on this:

What I'm about to say refers only to competitive FPS games:

The issue with game design these days is that unless the game is built from the ground up as a competitive balanced title, by nature it will fail and become boring.

I use Titanfall as an example. It's a recent popular FPS that was being marketed as the next best pvp FPS, but competitively speaking, it's a horrible game. The game isn't built from the ground up to be a competitive pvp title, it's purely a casual title at best.

The AI in the game act intentionally as fodder to support casual players to give them a psychological stimulation that they're doing good in the game. Just like a well known gamer in the Halo community by the name of Chaos Theory recently said in an interview, COD makes you feel super strong. Well, TF does the same thing. A casual doesn't care about killing actual players, they care only about total kill count, so killing AI left and right with such ease gives the notion of power.

Respawn themselves have been quoted saying the AI is there to provide fun. There's a fine line to walk when you start thinking about making things intentionally stupid for fun's sake, that's not proper game design. I can't imagine if when chess was being designed, they said...well the game is just too hard, this isn't going to be fun, lets make the game more like checkers.

John Carmack, formerly of id software, was quoted saying this about competitive Quake 3:

http://en.wikipedia....e_ProMode_Arena

The Challenge ProMode project was created by Richard "Hoony" Sandlant in May 1999, following the release of Q3Test, the beta version of Quake III Arena. Its goals were to make a more exciting and challenging game in the hope that this would help advance Q3A as a professional sport.[5]John Carmack, lead programmer of Q3A, suggested a more challenging version of the game might be better for professional gamers:

If there were a small set of professional rules that I agree with in theory but have chosen not to pursue because they conflict with more common play, then an official "pro mode" might make sense.

—John Carmack, October 2, 1999

Read that, and read it again. Look at what Carmack said, "because they conflict with more common play." Now granted, you can easily play Quake 3 without playing Pro Mode and still have a damn good competitive game in my opinion, but besides that point, Carmack basically did not go into Quake 3 with the notion of creating a super balanced competitive game, it was simply a fun pvp multiplayer deathmatch game.

Only recently we've seen a few developers actually designing games in general that from the very start, their game's core is competitive balance, ie., Riot Game's League of Legends; Blizzard's Starcraft II; Valve's Counter-strike, etc.

On the consoles, we have yet to have a game built purely on competitive balance, I'm not sure that will ever end either because the publishers are too per-occupied with generating sales that rival COD4 Modern Warfare.

In my opinion, 343i has a real chance here to recognize there's a legitimate audience for competitive balanced games, i.e., look at DOTA 2 and LOL. They have the chance to create a truly competitively balanced FPS that can attract everyone to come play the game and allow professionals to compete at a very advanced level for money, and at the end of the day, the game would still be fun and entertaining for everyone, pro or scrub

Wait, why do you keeping posting all of those down-sampled PC shots in here?

People were asking for more. Others had never played the PC version and wanted to see it to compare with the Xbox version of the game / what they remember. The game looks pretty good for 2004, but these just serve to show how sweet the remaster should be.

Much appreciated!

Have you already taken a shot of the view of Delta Halo at the start of Sacred Icon (when arby gets dropped off)?

God damn, seeing all those Halo 2 shots reminded me how much I love the forerunner architecture from the first games. Ancient monolithic structures that look like they've been there for eons. I remember just staring at them and letting my imagination run wild with what kind of civilization existed that built these things.

While I don't hate the new tron look that's in Halo 4, it really just doesn't feel the same at all.

But the MCC isn't being down-sampled from 7680x4320, so no, those pics don't serve to show how sweet it should be.

A few thoughts:

Halo2CovSpectre-transparent.png

I can't wait to see the Spectre again. Glorious Covenant Warthog!

ShadowH2.png

The Magic Purple School Bus!

325px-H3ODST-BrutePlasmaRifleLeftSide.png

I hope they give the Brute Plasma Rifle a bit of a makeover, rather than it being a simple recolor of the existing Plasma Rifle.

10a-Cov_Vehicles.png

How are they going to go about redoing the older Halo 2 Scarab? I'm assuming without editing the geometry, there's no possible way to make this one look anything like the Scarabs we have become accustomed to.

Whatever happened to the Fist of Rukt after the events of Halo 2?

Lastly... these guys... in horrific HD.

I think what made the old design of the Forerunner architecture work was that it was just utterly lifeless. Which is usually something you want to avoid when designing levels that players find engaging, but in the context of the universe it made total sense. The Forerunner stuff looked exactly like what it was - remnants of a once grand, hyper-advanced race that was long-dead. And what they left behind had been allowed to sit there largely untouched and slowly die with time. With the updates in many cases it looks like the Forerunners just picked-up and left the week prior to the Chief showing up.

I don't hate the new stuff either, but their was a slightly eerie feeling given off by the old look that I think was dampened by running the Forerunner structures through the Tron filter.

You do realize that resolution isn't everything, right? H2 anniversary will not render at such high resolution with high amounts of AA, yes, but it will still look much better thanks to the new models, textures, shaders, lighting, etc. These pics are super clean on the edges, but still look very rough overall compared to something that would be released today. It will be amazing to replay this with all the new assets, even if it isn't with the same IQ. If you don't want to view them, don't click the links (and if they're the old embedded ones, don't look at them)!

As someone who has never played any Halo title yet plans to get an Xbox One and this collection, which game has the without a doubt best multiplayer?

You will likely get many different responses. I will say for me Halo 2 and Halo 3 are the games I am most looking forward to playing this Fall.

The new graphics is for the toggle, but the original graphics (the pics you're posting) won't have that AA because it isn't being down-sampled from an insanely high resolution. Want to show what it should look like in the MCC? Post 1080p screens without the down-sampling.

Overall? I would say Halo 3. Customs, forge, theater, co-op, and matchmaking that are all pretty good and work in multiplayer.

Competitive only? My vote is Halo 2.

Never played a lot of Halo CE online, so I couldn't judge.

Still don't see the issue here. Same exact assets, only cleaner presentation. Won't look a whole lot different, just more aliasing.

Im sorry for not furthering discussion, but Master Yoshi, that silhouetted picture of the t47 scarab had me laughing:)

It looks like a family sedan with legs and a beak holding an egg.

Alright, here is the first 60fps clip. 1080p60 with no fancy AA outside of the game's default. Stream it if you can handle it, download available if you can't. More specifics of what you guys would like would be good.

FOV is tuned up to 90 so I don't get dizzy or anything. Heroic difficulty. Xbox One controller.

If you want the best pure multiplayer console FPS ever go with Halo 1. It's unforgiving and awesome. Halo 2 is the most popular by far though, and is probably the best mix of competitive and fun.

Never got to play Halo 2 on PC before (thanks Vista! GFWL!) so seeing it at 60fps makes me want the H2A at 60fps even more.
