So I need to back up around 2TB of data, too much of a risk to have photos on only one drive.

Can I buy a 4TB drive like the WD MyBook or should I go for 2x2TB? Are 4TB drives reliable?

Would probably be best, but I can't afford it. Maybe I should go for 2x2TB and keep 2 copies, at least of all the photos.

Yes, get two of the same HDDs and run them in Raid 0. Everything place on the Raid 0 will automatically be copied onto both drives. If one fails, you will still have a copy on the other.

Edit: Should be Raid 1.

You mean RAID 1, not 0.

Yeah, RAID 0 is for increased performance.

Or he could go crazy and do RAID 0+1. I've kinda always wanted to do a setup like that haha. Would be a bit pointless now with SSD's though.

That said, I think it all comes down to how important these pictures are? I mean its just me, but honestly I can't think of any pictures that are worth spending $300+ on special/extra storage for.

Okay so I'm going for the 512gb mx100. I have a bunch of junk in my bios disabled for my overclock (Cstates and stuff) do I need to renable anything? When it comes to installing the OS, I have 8.1 installed on my HDD atm, will I be able to run windows installer from a usb, format the HDD clean and install it on the SSD just like that? Will I have to set up raid or anything

bump

I just built my new PC yesterday, and things didn't go quite as smoothly as I had hoped.

The build:
CPU: Intel 4790k
Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H
GPU: EVGA NVidia 780 Ti
RAM: G.Skill Sniper DDR3 2400 (1.65v)
PSU: CM 750V
Storage:
....256GB SSD Samsung 840 Pro
....512GB SSD Crucial MX100
....2TB HDD WD Black
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (w/ Window)
CPU Heatsink: CM Hyper 212 EVO.
Optical drive: Some ASUS DVD drive.

Really nice spec! >2000? I was thinking of something similar. Can you recommend the heatsink? How was placement inside that case overall?

Pictures from holidays from the last few years, pretty important to me. But I was thinking of an external drive and just wanted to know if 4TB drives are known to be unreliable or same as 2TB drives.

Any further feedback on this?

Quick question: a few months ago, my GPU started making a slight buzzing noise. It only happens on certain games, and only when something is being rendered. Definitely not coil whine, it sounds like when you hold a pieced of paper or something in a fan. It's not the fans though (although there was an incident with the fan around the time this started, but I ruled that out already). I have to put my ear right next to the case to hear it when it's happening, but it's still there.

I've played probably 20 hours worth of games on it since the buzzing started, and noticed no difference in performance from before it started. I'm just paranoid that the noise is indicative of a possible failure in the future, specifically one that could harm all the other parts.

My question is basically this; should I be concerenced that whatever is causing this could hurt my whole build? Or will it be self contained if it becomes a bigger issue in the future? And should I even be worrying about this noise? I'd imagine that PC parts have safety features to stop one part from ruining another, but this is my first PC so I'm not sure.

I don't even really want to know the cause, I just want to know if I should be concerned about the whole rig going kaput.

It's because your FPS count is going into the multiple of hundreds. You can stop this by setting a max frame rate in RadeonPro or NVIDIA Inspector.

I'm not so sure that's it. It happens in games that run at any framerate, even less that 60 sometimes It's not coil whine, more of a soft buzzing. I'll see if maybe that is the issue and I'm just overlooking something though, just in case.

Well that was pretty disappointing, purchased a 780ti to see what it could do vs my 780. My OC 780 scores higher than the OC 780TI. Given my 780 is a monster, but was expecting the 780ti to still beat it out hands down.

I know ordering a custom build is the wimpy way out, but I also know I'd be a disaster building my own system. What do you guys think about this build? Is there anything I've done "wrong?" Is the price good for what I'm getting? Would you recommend a different build or site? The system is for gaming, and I've got an Oculus DK2 on the way so I'd like something that can handle that.

Terrible value. $150 video card in a $1600 PC.

Can someone please recommend me the best fan replacement for my Cooler Master 212 Evo? I believe someone said Scythe was a great fan. I need 120mm and PWM correct? I am trying to take advantage of the Rakuten 30$ off coupon. Looking for super quiet under 20$

Can you only pick Scythe?

Their top dog fan isn't made anymore, their other stuff is just meh. Gentle Typhoon.

You need 120mm yes, but it doesn't HAVE to be PWM, it would just be better to be. I personally really like the Cougar brand fans. http://www.rakuten.com/prod/cougar-...mic-bearing-fluid-300000-hours/265753812.html I couldn't find the PWM version on that website, just the non PWM one. That said I use Cougar's 120mm PWM Vortex on my CM212 Evo and they work great, and are really quiet.

Obligatory NF-F12 suggestion.

(Yes it's over $20, but I love this fan)

Edit: Wasn't the Cooler Master JetFlo 120 supposed to be a great new option?

Thanks for the straight talk. :) My buddy said the same thing about the video card, but I can't tell if the performance difference between that card and one that is $300 is worth me getting slower/less RAM or not getting the SSD. I'll check out that website and use the OP as a guide as you suggested.

Share that $30 off coupon :O

NEWBIE. Works for new accounts only. Getting my gf a 128gb MX100 for her laptop and thought I would get me a quieter fan while I'm at it :D

No I only picked Scythe because Rakuten seems to have a lot of selection. I really wanted a Phanteks but no 120mm PWM available on the site. I see a Gentle Typhoon available but it's a 4250RPM one and I don't think I need that.

Do you have other recommendations for super quiet fan for my 212EVO?

If I don't have a PWM, my motherboard wont be controlling the fan speed right? I have an Asus Z87-A and try to keep my fans as low as possible. I think the current EVO fan is only at 700RPM or so.

I would get this if they had the redux option without the brown colors :P

A lot of new motherboards can do fan control via voltage. Read your manual to determine if yours can.

Cougar Vortex, Acrtic Cooling F12, Swiftech Helix, CoolerMaster JetFlo, Noctua NF F12, Corsair SP, and Noiseblocker eLoops are all great heatsink fans.

If I bump up it up to the GTX 770 is that more in-line with the rest of the build?
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1G8NYF

Every time I start doing the custom build on these sites I start going to town because I don't want this thing to be out of date before it reaches my door. I tried the the Ironside site, but it seems like Cyberpower is giving me more for my money. Of course, it might be things I don't need. Argh, this stuff stresses me out.

Ooooh according to my reading, my Asus Fan Xpert2 can control fans with voltage, so I can just get any 120mm fan and stick it on. Is high static pressure important for me? Read that a few times when googling. Or is that only for radiators

I have a white Fractal R4 with window...I'm thinking maybe it might not look so bad

Quick question I hope you guys can help with.

Current Rig Specs:
CPU: 3570K
RAM: Kingston Hyper blu 4GB
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Pro4
GPU: R9 270X (old: GTX 460)

Just got a 270X on Friday. However, the thing has three fans and barely doesn't fit in my case where the previous 460 was. That slot is a PCIe 3.0 slot. I removed the optional HD cage and the card can fit below the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot in a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot.

However, I didn't really get any performance changes running the WoW: Warlords of Draenor beta after changing to this card. In fact, feels worse.

My hunch: according to some docs, the other PCIe 2.0 x16 might be running at x4 as its built for doing SLI/Crossfire. Just wondering if others have experience with this and know that's the problem or not before I fire up the dremel and make the fucker fit.

Is there a motherboard behind that heatsink?

Load up GPU-Z and it'll tell you.

Just a quick one guys.

Weighing up a new graphics card, currently got a 660ti and the little thing has served me well over the last couple of years but it's been crippled from day one with the 192 bit bus, it can still run most titles at a high level but if you wanna ramp up the AA whilst still playing high settings then it chokes pretty bad, had to turn down the post processing on BF4 too as that seemed to be having a bad effect. Anyhow it's not unplayable, can still get 40 or over most times but i like 60fps if possible.

So i've been thinking about upgrading, maybe doing a cheap build as well and swapping a few parts about, but is the 780 good enough or would i need the 780ti? Bearing in mind i'm only running one monitor, mostly at 1080 although i will be downsampling here and their.

Current Parts:

i5 3750k (no oc'd...yet)
8gb ram
660ti 2gb
550w corsair semi mod psu

would my cpu end up being a bottleneck at anypoint in the future? and would i need a better psu for the card?

If you OC'd your CPU, you would get a much more consistent (and probably higher) frame rate in BF4.

The 290 is currently the best buy, in terms of performance:$. It's basically on par with the 780. There's 880 news and rumors swirling though, so it might be out within a few months.

Guys I have a $1500 bugdet to spend on a gaming PC. I want to get the most out of money. I know I can go on PC parts and select the best prizes but i dont know which parts I should choose or where should I invest better.I am confused!!!Nvidia or radeon???..Can anyone help??

Hey guys, I have a question. I've been noticing that I've had a couple of issues with my card that I got from Amazon and just wanted to see if it's either the card or another component causing problems in the build. I got an MSI 290 from Amazon warehouse for $300 since the Gigabytes were sold out. I was having screen flickering issues that seems to have been a result of the cable I was using. With that fixed, my other issues have been crashing with a slight overclock and my gpu usage being all over the place when playing games according to Afterburner's OSD. Most recently, I've been playing Witcher 2 and I see that besides I guess the cutscenes when they first load up, its mostly 60fps. Any ideas?

So i'm thinking of testing my PSU. I've had it for four years now so maybe it's degraded enough where its not providing enough power? I just want to make sure that it isn't anything other than the card before going through with an RMA.

So I've been wondering if there's a half decent low wattage GPU I can throw in my old 2009 Gateway PC?

Is there any hope for me GAF?

Model: Gateway DX4710-09

With that CPU and PSU, its probably not even worth it, to be honest. But I guess you could get something for ~$100 that would improve performance.

Is there any place that makes custom plastic/injection molded or so cases for PCs? Like you give them specifications and images, and they make it?

I have a really cool idea.

Hey guys, is the Crucial MX100 128gb a better drive than the Samsung EVO 120gb? Only direct comparison I could find was this site

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=crucial_mx100_128&num=3

and it seems like Crucial beats the Samsung in some tests, and loses in others. I dont really understand all of the tests and not sure which matters more. Are they pretty much equal and I should go with the cheaper one?

Also noticed that the 128gb drives in general perform much lower than the 256gb. They are still a worthy upgrade to a laptop HDD right?
