I don't know...after I upgraded vivian, I spammed firey jinx like no tomorrow. Goombella was the best partner tho if the right setup was abused lol.

Vivian seems rather cool too, but I never got far enough into TTYD to actually get her into my party. I've seen her mentioned enough times over the years to look up her story and stuff and she seems pretty cool.
I just liked Goombella's sass and inexplicably extensive knowledge on almost anything :3

You're a bad person and you should feel bad. I didn't know there could be anyone so devoid of taste and joy that they would not feel compelled to finish this game upon booting it up. And it is oh so worth it. You must regain your honor.

When "The gameplay was decent enough to be bearable" is literally the most positive thing you can say about a game, maybe it wasn't a very good game?
And even if the gameplay wasn't unplayable, it certainly wasn't good. As there was basically no exploration or puzzle solving, you were pretty much just left with a character action game with a woefully limited array of moves and a dodge mechanic that lets you dodge at least 90% of the game's attacks by simply wiggling the d-pad around.

TTYD is by far the best Paper Mario game, with Vivian being my favorite party member. She's the shit and, in an unrelated note, has an interesting localization history putting her gender into question.

I honestly have no idea why I stopped. I tend to complete most games I start so the list of ones I've started and not played right through is very small. Infact I think the list is literally just TTYD and Tales of Symphonia. I've started and stopped Tales several times but real life stuff has kinda killed the momentum and by the time i get back to it I kind of have to start from the beginning just to remind myself what the heck happened and how the combat works again XD

The great thing about TTYD is all your partners could be deadly if you leveled them up and gave them the right badges Even Ms. Mowz is a killer thanks to her defense-piercing attacks.

That happened to me with Skyward Sword, as I lost my save after getting through roughly 75% game and I just couldn't bring myself to play through all that again (I eventually did beat it). I'd say TTYD is definitely worth it, as it has one of my favorite finales in gaming. The last boss is epic, Mario game or not, and all the party member you get are really charming.

The Thousand Year Door is one of the funniest games I've ever played. The entire pianta mafia section had me crying.

To be fair towards SPM tho: I'd pay good money for an extended version of the Chapter where the nerd captures Peach. That one is 10/10 entertainment.

Still like SMRPG better, but they're so damn close. The one thing I wish Paper Mario games would do more of is create new species for party members in the vein of Mallow and Geno. I like that they use existing Mario creatures sometimes, but Vivian is so cool because she's a brand new design that feels particularly fresh.

All I know is, from what I played of TTYD and completing partners in time and super paper mario, is that the mario side-stories have absolutely amazing characters/characterisation :3

The Mario RPG's show how great Nintendo's localization team really is. There are a tone of legitimately funny lines in all of the games. If you ever get to the crows in TTYD...so good.
