Hi,

I just recently put together a new rig for the first time and amazingly everything seems to be working!!! (I'm a little paranoid about how well it's going actually)

So, I need a Windows 8 key. I have the USB ready to go, just shopping around for a key. I remember reading here once someone recommending Reddit resellers? How trustworthy are those keys? Any feedback from someone who has bought from Reddit would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I'm late replying, but I got one on softwareswap for $8.

$8!!

Got an office 2007 key for $10!

The world is your oyster when it comes to settings on PC.

And PS4 runs an equivalent of Medium settings. A bit different, but that is the closest base setting.

A lot of it depends on your mouse. If you're a serious gamer, I'd use one, though.

Thanks.

Another question. I like the look of the CM Storm Spawn mouse, but it doesn't look like any retailers have it here in Australia, what's a good alternative for a claw grip? (which is what I use I think).

Perhaps the last update on my build.

Getting a PWM splitter (specifically, this one) definitely fixed my CPU fan spinning too fast.

Sadly the case fans on the Enthoo Pro are much louder than I expected at idle. They're still connected to that fan hub (which is still getting a PWM signal from CPU_FAN and power from SATA), so I'm going to try hooking them up to the mobo sys_fan headers instead. If that doesn't fix it either, I might consider getting a couple of PWM fans for the case and a good PWM hub to have all the fans linked to the CPU_FAN header, because I was really hoping for something quieter when idle.

Turns out the fan hub that came with the case wasn't working properly. I disconnected the fan hub entirely, and connected the two fans directly to the mobo headers. The case is now quiet during idle! Not completely silent, but sooo much easier to ignore. Leaving it on overnight is no longer an issue.

I think I might have nudged the heatsink (as in, lifted it off completely) while connecting one of the fans to CPU_OPT and gotten some air between the sink and the CPU, so I might have to go back and reseat the heatsink sometime in the future. Temps seem to have gone up a couple degrees while stress testing. Not enough to worry me, but annoying enough to notice.

As for overclocking, I've settled on 4.6GHz @ 1.25 VID (which ends up being around 1.27 Vcore) for an overclock. Any higher and I need too much voltage for my liking. Managed to leave Uncore at the stock 4GHz as well. I had to downclock my RAM from 2400@1.65V to 1866@1.5V to make it work though, which isn't an issue since I got the timings tight enough to match the 1866 kit I would have bought instead. I might try to tighten them a bit more later, but overall I'm happy enough with the overclock.

Current build

Intel i5 4460 4C/4T
ASRock Z97 Pro 3
1.35V / 1.5V 2x4GB (8GB)
R7 265 / GTX 750Ti 2GB
1TB WD Blue WD10EZEX
Antec VP450
SilverStone PS08B (mATX)

So I've begun the process of buying the parts for my computer and I've come up with a few more questions before I get the rest. So far I've gotten the power supply, case, and HDD. I'm leaning more towards doing a lot of editing and I was wondering what I could change in my current build to help that. Also what graphics is better long term and what specific sticks of RAM should I go for? Thanks.

Case: Corsair 500R
CPU: Intel i5 4670k
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Pro 3
RAM: Kingston PC3-12800 CL9 8GB (2x4GB)
Graphic Card: MSI Radeon R9 280
SSD: Crucial MX100 256GB
PSU: Coolmaster RS550-ACAAB-J1
HDD: Western Digital WD20EZRX 2TB

Thanks for the fast reply!

Budget: I'm based in Japan and would have liked to stick somewhere around 100k Yen. With the build right now, I'm a bit higher than that, but that's not a biggie.

Main Use: Light Gaming (3) , Gaming (5), Emulation (PS2/Wii) (1, if not 0.5), General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p playback) (3.5). Also some Image Manipulation, but that doesn't really change all that much, does it?

Monitor Resolution: I am planning on hooking the build up to my TV for space reasons. I know TVs are shitty monitors, but it will have to do.

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Is 30FPS acceptable? 60? 120? How important is PhysX / SuperSampling / CUDA to you? This being my first my first custom desktop, I am a complete noob. 60fps would be grand. I am not really a fan of the HUGE AAA titles, but some graphically intense stuff might find its way into my library. I... kinda prefer artsy fartsy games.

When will you build?: A friend who has agreed on helping me set everything up will head back to his country at the end of August, so I would like to get going as soon as possible.

Will you be overclocking?: That friend also told me I won't be overclocking (even though I thought that's pretty much standard...).

.

What percentage better? It's just 100 dollars. The other parts are mid-end (i3 2100, 4GB) and a 6970 would make a few games I own (Witcher 2, Crysis 3, BF3) fly compared to what I have now. I want to upgrade in increments to play next-gen games by the winter or early 2015 and a $100 GPU would be a boon for my budget ($500 from my grandmother).

A R9 270 or R9 270X would be a much bigger jump for $140 and $160 respectively.

I also like how they copied Noctua's mount, I really wish every water block would steal swiftech's mount.

So I recently replaced the thermal paste on my CPU. The temps were going upwards of 60c, IDLE. Scary. But now that I've replaced the paste, the temperatures seem to have gone down quite a bit. But sometimes, while playing games the temps go to 56-60c.Are these normal temperatures?

Additional information:

It's summer time, and the living room isn't exactly cool.
I'm using the original heatsink.

I think the only the shadows were not set at Ultra on the PS4, but everything else was.
Could I even lower the resolution of a PC game to something like 900p?
Any resolution that is above 720p, but below 1080p?
Any reason you're not just gaming on PS4?
Thanks.

Do you have any electronics stores around you? When I was searching for a mouse I just went into a store and put my hands on every mouse they had until I found one that felt comfortable.

Yeah those temps sound fine to me, especially with the stock cooler. Install something like HWMonitor if you want to get a better idea of your system temps.

GAF, do the cables that supply your SSD/HDD/CD-Rom with power usually have three out ends? I have two of these cables and they both branch out into three plugs. So I got six plugs in total. But, on each cable, only one plug fits! Which means I got four plugs in total where the plug won't completely fit into the socket of the HDD/SSD/CD-Rom... It kinda hangs loosely and won't go all the way in. This is strange right? All six plugs should be the same, no?

Not in Italy it's not. Retail pricing for the 212 evo is 33 Euro and change (28 on offer on amazon right now) and the H5 is larger which probably means better heat dissipation and costs only 3 more euro than the 212 evo. So yeah, when it comes to Europe this thing is definitely able to replace the 212 evo. Either way I am not the target audience since I will be trying to build a custom loop.

I need some help deciding on something. What's the best / easiest to use file backup tool / app for backing up files from one HDD to another HDD? I don't need something with online cloud capabilities, or any shit like that. Just something simple, and effective.

I'm looking for a specific cable, I searched over newegg and couldn't find it. It's an internal power cable, 2 pin female to molex power connector for my fan. My sentey case didn't come with it and I contacted them, they said they sent out a replacement and that was almost 2 weeks ago...

Anyone know of any sites where I can order such a cable? I've found parts to assemble the cable but I'd rather not go out and spend money on a soldering guns & tools.

You want to connect a 3pin fan to you PSU via Molex?
Like this?

Yes, but its 2 pin female (like in the picture, but only 2 slots) fan. Really odd because the standard seems to be 3 pin.

To be more specific, I ordered the case, the case usually has (I know this because my brother has the same case) one of those cables leading from the top front circuit board to the PSU (the top front of the case has buttons that control whether the fan is on or not, all the fans connect to this circuit board, the circuit board connects to the psu using the cable I described).

This is the case

You can see the fan controls at the top, the 4 buttons.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811322018 is the case.

Hmm never seen a 2 pin connector, 3 pin connector with 2 leads can occur. Can you take us a photo? Can you not connect it to the motherboard headers? Connecting via molex means the fan will be loud as itll spin at maximum speed. Usually a last resort.

I think the biggest factor in buying this over the Hyper 212 is that it has a smooth nickel(?) plated base which means a much better thermal paste spread than using the HDT style cooler which you ideally need to fill the gaps between the copper pipes with TIM before installation to get the best spread.

I'd be shocked if this benchmarks better than the Noctua NH-D14 or NH-D15. I feel like this has potential to be in some weird middle ground where it's more expensive that the 212, but not on par with the NH-D15.

Of course it wont beat a D15, look at the size of it. I hope its similarly priced to the Hyper 212, £30 would do it, purely for the sake of not having to deal with the exposed copper pipes. Hyper 212 is £25 in UK.

What im more shocked by is that somebody is manufacturing something in the UK.

Lol yeah, lets just wait till it retails. From techpowerup

I'll take a picture in a few mins, have to take case apart. unless I can get a good angle from the bottom.

So far it sounds like you need a cable that connects the fan controller board to the PSU, in that case it sounds like a custom cable so far, or atleast something that isnt so common, but get the photo here to be sure.

Just thought i would post my specs because... why not ;)

CPU: i5 4670k @ 4.4ghz
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Seidon 120v
MOBO: msi Z87-G45 Gaming

Soon adding an SSD and a second GTX 770... Yay!

Heres a build im thinking about purchasing before the years end. I wanted to get GAFs opinion on it because ive been out of the PC game for quite some time now and was sort of going by what i remember when picking the pieces. So, is it a balanced build? Its got a 750PSU because i figured buying a second GTX 770 down the road for SLI would give a major performance boost while saving money, instead of just buying what ever's the newest and greatest GPU at the time. Some other side accessories would be a Samsung 840 Evo 250Gb SSD, and a ASUS MX279H monitor.

Good choices, the only thing to really think about is the SLI/Xfire business. Firstly we know cards scale differently depending on the game, and secondly the extra noise can be pretty annoying. The top card always running hotter means itll also be even louder than normal. Lastly we have the extra power draw which means slightly higher electricity bill.

I always advise people to buy the best single GPU they can afford or buy multi GPUs if they can afford to with the best cards out right now.

Now if you decide not to SLI, you could also go for a mATX or even mITX PC, a la steambox.

Damn, when the fuck is Nvidia going to release these news cards?! I have a buyer for my SLI GTX 670 but I'm not selling my cards until I can get a replacement. And I'm definitely not getting an overpriced 780ti :/

Me personally, I'd try to scale down price (maybe go from 16gb of RAM to 8gb) enough to upgrade to a GTX 780, or find an R9 290.

Here you go:

Here's a reference image to get an idea of where the controller board is at:

Here's the circuit board, the fans all lead into the connector on the right, the power cord I need goes into the bottom slot

Here's a close up on the connectors, there's only two prongs:

Ok im pretty sure you need a CB-32D to Molex cable. Cant seem to find one, but you could buy a CB-32D to 3 Pin header, and a 3Pin header to Molex. Either plug them into each other or solder the CB-32D end to the Molex for neatness.

Or dont bother and run fans off the motherboard, in a few days youll set the fans to lowest speeds and forget about them.
