Alright, some Brawl leaks, for reference.
ChaosZero-October 31st, 2007: http://i.imgur.com/1avyxRy.jpg
Things leaked:
Most of the roster.
Dragoon Parts.
Final Destination being back.
Nyasenaya-Leaked a few times. Probably easier to just view all her Smashboards posts, but if you don't feel like that, the majority can be found in these links: First leak: http://smashboards.com/threads/brawl-playtest-massive-spoilers.126260/#post-3295086 (Note that the OP was deleted by a mod, but you can get the gist of what happened from the replies). Second leak: http://smashboards.com/threads/brawl-will-be-delayed-in-the-us-again.129404/ One thing worth noting is she claimed Peach was much more risque in early Brawl designs, which explains why the final Brawl Peach is the ugliest model of Peach ever made.
Leaks:
Mario Kart Wii having a dedicated channel, 12 player online.
Sonic reveal date.
Megaman not being in Brawl.
Olimar being in the game.
Ness and game & watch returning.
The second delay.
Brawl being on a dual-layered disc.
Europe getting the game hella late.
Toon Link being in the game.

If anyone knows of any others, I'll update this post.

The delay topic has some hilarious replies.

Someone ban this guy. We don't need people like this spreading false BS around. And on account of that, this is his second time doing it.

Ban + Lock thread time.

If there was another delay after the original delay, they would have to update the site another X amount of days. Considering that the site has announced some new characters, they were probably going to try to meet the Dec. 3 deadline. But it was then obvious that they weren't going to- so he took some time to add some things.

It actuality, they probably wanted to meet the deadline but never intended to. The US wanted to make it look like Smash was coming out in 2007, but I believe due to no release date for Japan before the delay was announced that they didn't plan to meet the deadline.

I now think this deadline will be met. All signs point to that it will be unless something goes wrong in production.

You sir are an idiot.

you really have to admire their belief in megaman back in the brawl days

It was such a different world. Once fans latched on to a particular character they were BELIEVED to be in the game with all their might. Their fan demand was what Smash was all about, so every choice they came up with was guaranteed to them. It's amazing to look back and everybody who was supposedly 100% going to make it and then didn't.

Also "only 35 characters" was a huge complaint. I don't know why. That's ten over Melee and more with transformations. What was wrong with people?

Edit: I want more details on risqué Peach.

Kremlings aren't that old and forgotten, iirc their last appearance was in Wii

In terms of the main series, they're relatively forgotten and a lot of people want them to come back in some way.

I know when it was announced that DKTF had multiple islands and that David Wise was working on the game, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to bring them back by making a derelict crocodile isle a hidden world leading to a teaser for DKCR3.

But that was way too much wishful thinking considering how much Retro just wants to do their own thing in DKCR, which sucks because I'd love to see their environmental artists' take on all of the classic kremling locations from the original series.

lots of things

this attitude carried over to wikipedia as well when it came down to posting a picture of the roster. the entire roster had been leaked and it was completely correct but it didn't contain bomberman, so obviously it was fake

To be fair Melee had over twice the amount of characters 64 did. With no other frame of reference a 70% increase or more probably didn't seem unreasonable to them.

My old leak-check.

Roster is fake if:
1. Ness is playable, or
2. Ness isn't playable

I guess this is one of those time-sensitive notions people had that sounds ridiculous now. But I guess I could see people expecting it to be twice the size.

Yes we were all thrilled to find out that 100% increase in characters included the likes of Pichu and Dr. Mario. Brawl has a great roster albeit with disappointments.

It's perhaps also worth considering that the much larger development time Brawl had compared to Melee might've also led to the expectations of a bigger roster.

The main issue was the distribution of newcomers vs unlockables. Showing so many newcomers before launch made people think that there'd be a huge unlockable line up with even more of them, rather than an unlockable line up about as big as Melee's and where most unlockables were returning veterans.

Awesome. I have no idea how the latter could have known about the second delay as early as November or December... I always assumed that was decided later.

I'm also surprised how hostile people seemed to be towards 'leaks' back then. I know we pour derision on them and call them dumb now still, but deleting messages and locking threads because of lack of proof is ridiculous. Of course if it's real there's no proof lol.

Thanks for the links though. Fun reads!

Well, people were believing it to be possibly the last ever Smash Bros game, so it did seem dissappointing at the time.
Worth noting that, had Sonic not been in and all the cut characters been in, there likely would have been an even 40 roster slots (46 characters).

Risque Peach details:

A bit of insider info, and this time about Peach. Peach looked completely different in the early development stages of Brawl. By different, I mean more scantily clad in this case. Minidress and skimpy underwear., as seen in some sports titles. I have no info weather this was plain programmer mischief, or if Sakurai's team simply wanted a more "adult" style. My contact told me that he thought it was the latter, but that's only my contact's guess and we won't know for sure what Sakurai's team was thinking.

However, Nintendo wasn't very pleased as you could easily catch a glimpse Peach's bare butt during normal gameplay. She was always having about the same moveset however (as Melee), so that was never tampered with. It's strange though, because a bare butt is nothing more than a T rating. Yet they couldn't keep it. I asked my contact about this and he said that it most probably was because this is a fighting game. In the past, Peach has showed off her butt in the Japanese versions of some sports titles for the GameCube, but as this is a fighting game it was going to be a lot more visible, even during normal gameplay. (because fighting games have a lot more movement and animations than golf, tennis or skiing)

The leaker also speculated that this was why Peach was shown off fairly late (she was the third-to-last Melee character shown off pre-release).

Way to go Smashboards.

Edit: This is a mod lock of what was confirmed as a legitimate leak, who also edited the OP to say it was all lies and "yaaaay", in case you didn't read Hatchtags links above.

Pretty impressive how in denial some people are there.

My favorite part:

People were *THAT* sure that mega man was in? Ness I might understand because of the 'up until now' thing, but lolololol

This is what I always say.

As a kid, having characters like Bowser and Ganondorf and Mewtwo (huh, all villains) was amazing. But characters like Pichu and Dr. Mario were so weird. I was eleven and I was so confused why characters it seemed like nobody would want were there. I think you've gone wrong when playing them to clear modes is a chore. I know lots of people preferred Doc competitively, but to an eleven year old kid it was bogus.

If we got Brawl's roster for Melee my whole life could be different.

They definitely feel like teenagers. I don't know any of them as people and they're most definitely NOT teenagers (right?). But they sure do seem like it. Then and now.
The mod that locked that thread probably was a teenager at the time, idk. He was one of the guys that made a guest appearance on the 1up show around the time Brawl released; they all seem pretty young.

We were all teenagers at some point, I suppose. And I guess owning and moderating a forum as a bunch of teenagers was more than I ever accomplished when I was thirteen.

I saw that! :P

You saw nothing!

So something I was thinking about awhile ago was that in Brawl even with items off, if you were playing someone and they were kicking your ass- you'd be given a smash ball when you came back.

Anyone think this is going to return? I could see it being harder to get, and it's not going to ever give someone a win if they're losing that bad- but it was a bit of the "making it OK for everyone to play" ordeal in the same vein as tripping.

Damn, that Peach sounds amazing.

You make me glad I'm not ever going to be the most avatar-quoted person in these threads.

To me, at least, it seems like around the time Brawl modding got big, Smashboards' modding staff changed a lot more towards being filled with people working on mods such as Project M, Brawl+, Balanced Brawl, Brawl Minus, etc. But that could just be my impression, I donno. I haven't really gone there in years.

god, I remember YEARS ago back on the nsider forums where someone made a - yes - 3 post long OP stating why Tom Nook was going to be in smash over any other AC rep. All I said was the Villager (I think I recall even calling the character by that name) was the most logical representative of the franchise and all I got was nothing but "fuk u, u dont know what ur talking about idiot" posts from other members...

It makes sense that a lot of the Smash community started out pretty young. Nintendo tries to make their games appealing to kids, and it used to work.

I was a member of the council of a powerful clan in a mmo when I was a teenager.. and I can say, its a TERRIBLE idea lol

I remember the Nsider forums very well. It was actually my first community. I never posted on a forum before that.

And it was insane. Very very crowded, at least on the Smash forum, and opinions were WILD.

Edit: I remember so many character megathreads and one really central member of the community who loved Lyndis. Every Fire Emblem thread inevitably fell apart because of that person and their followers. Now that I think of it, I'm surprised there was so much FE fandom there. I remember threads for Lyn, Hector, and Sigurd being really popular.

Sometimes it seems like NeoGAF moderators are thirteen yea-You have been banned from NeoGAF

Now that I recall, I think this person (probably a kid) drew this detailed moveset concept including the physics of Tom Nook and how he would fight. The person also had alternate color pallette swap concepts and wrote up a theory why the brawl stage was for his inclusion. MANY people supported it at the time, and it lead to a myspace group. haha

ANYTIME someone had a different opinion, he/she (The OP) would seriously spit fire at the poor user for having one. It was so wild. lol People had way too much time on their hands.

Those were the days... I was probably like 13 or 14 at the time but I was more of a lurker.

Lol, what's the Thanos thing about? I saw it a bunch in Off-Topic thread titles yesterday.

Someone posts a thread for the first look at Thanos in Gaurdians of the Galaxy. People get pissed off that it's a spoiler. Mods and users alike note that Thanos being in the movie has been confirmed many times by official sources. Some users still pissy about being spoiled on it for some reason. Mods start editting thread titles to have Thanos in them. Shit was pretty funny, it's weird how people are so scared of spoilers these days.

Also, Nsider Forums were one of my first forums I went on, along with Serebii Forums and Pokemon Elite 2000. I don't go on any of them anymore, though. Haven't in years (plus I mean two of them are closed).

If you're sensitive to spoilers get off of fan forums. Those kind of people are so hard to handle. Everybody I think has a "sixth sense" to what is a spoiler and if your definition is different from "a major plot point or game mechanic meant to be experienced as a surprise" then that's your own responsibility.

Edit: In regards to Nsider character threads having really detailed sketches of movesets and alts, they still do that on Smashboards.

Yooooooo this is where I learned about obtaining Mew in R/B.

Now that I think of it, when Nsider closed the community tried to make their own Nsider clone like NeoGAF did and succeeded in doing. I even registered for it. It was really sad and pathetic, but the sudden closing of that community have a lot of people nowhere to go.

hahaha maaaaan you guys got me all nostalgic. please don't tell me we were all
pre
teens at the time when serebii, pe2000, and nsider forums started!
