Twitch: Changes To Audio In VODS

Fucking idiot music lobbyists.

Don't know if this was posted yet.

I was just about to link to a tweet that showed this, too.

Fucking LOL.

Its not BS its the law. And the answer is "not long" so keep your stuff boxed and packed tight, because if you think hitbox or anyone else can tell the law to go fuck itself so you can stream music you don't have the license to stream, you are horribly mistaken.
Even if you have the license, you get muted. Heck, even VODs with no music at all are being muted lol

Wow... Silly. No one is entering a Twitch channel so they can hear music for free. If someone happens to hear a song they like in a Twitch channel they can just buy it afterward. Free publicity.

considering i basically went on twitch to watch mtg/hearthstone archives and occasional events like sgdq/agdq (which i watched mostly via archive), i think my twitch usage just went from a fair number of hours weekly to close to zero.

while this is going to suck in the short term, there is zero doubt in my mind the internet will adapt, as it always does.

I truly have to wonder how long before all those people that were against commercial revenue sharing deals with music/content owners do a 180 after realizing that without such a setup all forms of VOD and Streaming will end up with full takedown/mutes everywhere.

Saw it coming long time ago.

Even if you have the license, you get muted. Heck, even VODs with no music at all are being muted lol

Those are errors that can obviously be fixed, thats not the long term problem. The long term problem is for the folks without the license which is the large vast majority here.

Hahaha to all the people that said this wouldn't happen.

"No, they will not change anything."

"Nah, you're paranoid."

"Google knows how to keep Twitch making money."

Well, there's your answer. RIP in pieces Twitch.

No we are all dirty pirates that go to Twitch to listen to music for free!

Damn this is just sad. Why do they have to butcher such a great gaming community? Nobody asked for this.

RIP Twitch

I'm more bummed out by past VODs expiring. Many old videos that I used to use as a reference to get better at games will be lost now. :(

Hahaha, even their own content, they didn't think this through did they?

If only part of the vid is muted, you can currently unmute it by pressing space twice.

lol twitch

try it here http://www.twitch.tv/adam_ak/b/555134005

Mute my audio if old.

you'll even get done for singing

This is turning into footloose.

(edit)

Dammit, too slow.

I just don't get why a massive change like this is just flipped on like a switch without any thought or preparations in a company as massive as Twitch.

They were fully prepared to not give a fuck.

This will hardly matter since they're not attacking live broadcasts and they're not going to archive past broadcasts anymore. Once they start taking down live broadcasts for copyright reasons then it's over.

lol. Well they're already doing worse than I expected.

Wario just posted that you can press spacebar twice over the affected parts of a 'claimed' Twitch VOD and disable the system

I hope so too, but he banks on speedrunning as a vocation...and a few do.

Are they willing to bail on what's essentially their job to go to somewhere else not poisoned by cancerous copyright bullshit?

If they can get revenue from Hitbox (which they seem to are willing to offer in a similar way to Twitch), sure. It's not entirely the same as with Youtube; for example when Classic Game Room moved from Youtube to Dailymotion, the site did not offer the same things Youtube did so it was unsustainable, and resulted in the channel coming back to Youtube. If Hitbox plays it's cards right, they may be able to have some retention.

Mad at Google for the monopolistic buyout, mad at the music industry for shitty practices, and mad at Twitch for the terrible implementation.

Man this is terrible.

Also Lol@Twitch official VODs getting hit.

Good intentions do not make you exempt from copyright law.

Regardless, muting of in-game audio is just inexcusable. They have a huge problem on their hands. I didn't expect so many false positives to pop up already.

Here is the thing. They just can't say hey we'll only stop the copyright infringement in VOD's but not live streaming. They've opened up Pandora's box. Live streaming "content id" is coming. Don't believe the lie Twitch is saying that they won't do it to live streaming. It has to happen now. They just can't selectively enforce it on their website.

This is the kinda move you make when you think people have no where else to go. Bold move, considering the nature of the internet.
Yup.

I picture the twitch HQ, bunch of assholes standing around, someone needs to give the engineers the order to activate the ACR system. A moment of silence, people looking around awkwardly, uneasiness on everyone's face. Then, an exec blurts out. "Where else are they going to go? hitbox.tv!?" He nods to the engineer.

Laughter. Clinking of champagne glasses.
