Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Edit: Nevermind. Was drunk, stupid joke :)
No problem, was going to answer, too bad :p

Yah, they are the next step after the X-52 and X-55 of Saitek. I'd say that it's pretty much the top you can get for a HOTAS until you want to get a Thrustmaster Warthog, but that one seem to only be overkill.
I checked the price for CH: 150€ for the stick and 150€ the throttle, will wait a bit, again not in a hurry, this plus the Occulus, this is going to be MADNESS! ^^

Yeah I'd love to take out a long range exploration vessel but I'm not sure there'd be much for us in terms of incentive and missions.

Edit: I was wrong. Additional info:

Exploration PT 1
Exploration PT 2

That is just... my heart is pounding... I love exploration in EVE, can't wait to try it out in ED \o/

It's fine with kb/m, though I haven't come across any pvp.
Perfect! :)

They mentioned being a Spy as one of the possible "professions", so I'm sure they will expand upon the mechanics of how that would work. Hopefully they will include some recon ships that have active camouflage rather than just running silent to reduce your heat signature. If they include some kind of cloaking device, it would make things like spying and even pirating a bit more interesting.

I think they should completely avoid cloaking. Silent running is a near perfect balance of risk and reward and against the blackness of space you might as well be cloaked if you turn your drives off.

Yeah, that's true. I didn't really think about it that way. Is there a way to actually turn your engines off? It would be good to be able to to conserve fuel.

Yep. Look to your right screen and go into the functions(?) tab. I think that's the name of it. When I need to go stealth my process is as follows:

- Flight assist off
- Deploy heat sink
- Silent running
- Drives off

Sends me into a drift based on my last heading and since drives have been kicked off, you won't be given away by the automatic thruster firing. When people were griefing in the Premium Beta this was my way of getting past people camping outside stations so I could safely get away with cargo.

Ahh! Thanks! I keep forgetting to look through the Functions tab. I like trying to have everything mapped to my HOTAS, so I usually resort to looking through the controls options to figure out what I can do.

Is anyone using a triple monitor setup?
I'm looking for one with thin frames/bezel and a good stand. The Samsung MD230x3 looks very nice, but very expensive. Are there any alternatives?

Do you find the USB cable that goes between the stick and the throttle to be way to short to be useful??

It isn't even long enough to fit on each side of my keyboard.

I got the thing for free so I can't complain too much but I really wish that cord was longer.

Weird, mine goes around my keyboard just fine (thought it's tight). I guess if you have a big keyboard you can have it around.

But since the keyboard isn't used that much with a Hotas (other than some rarely used functions or the chat), it can be placed elsewhere.

I have a triple monitor secondary setup and was JUST about to ask this. Want to know if the 5760x1080 resolution is supported in the game.

I think it was in Alpha as proven in this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceOdOytgT64

(Where the guy does present both CH Stick and Throttle vs the X52, check it out, although he is biased on the CH)

He has 3 Screen Setup. I think I saw a thread on that on the official forums, If I find it I'm gonna post it here.

I have a Logitech G19, which is rather large. Though to be honest I don't think I've tried the stick/throttle since I got the G19. It was my G15 that was too big.

I'll have to test it again.

Are you sure? Mine fits on either side of a rather large keyboard. I had to unwind a foot or so of cable from the base of the throttle, but it fits nicely on each end of the kb.

Didn't want to wait until the weekend, so I went ahead and hooked up my Thrustmaster Hotas. Immediately the difference was noticeable however.....

....I am sucking ass and getting destroyed in the 3rd "training" mission -- Side Winder face off. Seems like once he gets behind me there's no way for me to turn the tables except pulling back on the throttle and reversing like crazy. I am embarrassingly bad right now...any tips?!

any tips?!

You can outmaneuver him if you have max Engine and go at half speed, that way you have max maneuvrability. Also, don't play his game of chicken.

If you have to, let him pass you, go at half speed, spin and stay in his ass.

Otherwise... practice those maneuvers, at first I sucked too.

Hi guys,

Just uploaded a clip of my Voice Attack setup for navigating the in game galaxy map, very useful when playing using an Oculus Rift (which I do). Pretty cool even if you are not, feels very futuristic :)

http://youtu.be/3ZpwPvcMGwI

Any questions, just ask.

EDIT - youtube is still processing the HD versions of the video, only just uploaded, but you can already watch it in crappy SD quality if you want!

That was quite fantastic! Nicely done! I only use VoiceAttack currently for basic things like deploying/retracting weapons/landing gear/cargo scoop, etc. I will definitely have to look into doing more complex operations with it like you have.

I just tested it with my G19 and it barely fits on both sides, the throttle side has to be angled for it to even fit.

The cable connecting to the two does not appear to be detachable so if I was to try to extend it I'd have to cut the cable and splice in more cable length.

woah! Though I think a mouse would still be superior (and even with occulus... I dont think you really need to look to find it, well it's me) it's freaking cool.

this is great

how do you set this up for use in game?

As I understand it, you don't. VoiceAttack just presses buttons, the game itself can't tell the difference between VoiceAttack's keypresses and yours.

Now I just need to figure out why my microphone isn't working so I can start setting it up.

When turning try to keep your speed in the blue bars for tighter turns

I'm getting this tomorrow with my bonus from work (woo!). I figure I'll just use VA + gamepad for now and possibly pick up a stick later.

I've been watching a few different streamers play and they were what really convinced me to pick it up. One streamer I was watching would say "I have the need" and his computer would say "The need for speed" and kick into warp drive. Then another streamer had it set up to where any time someone joined his channel his computer would say Welcome (username) which was great.

I think that was Dingo, I've been following him on Twitch. I actually plan on using that line once I get VA set up. I saw another guy use "Punch it, Chewie" to go to warp. You don't think about just how customizable it is until you hear stuff like that.

Would it be possible for voice attack to lock a destination every time I said, "computer, set a course for aulin?"

I accepted a combat mission, it was to mess up some Fed fighters in a zone. I went, I did that, I sided correctly, and got 5 bounty vouchers.

I turned those vouchers in to the correct space station that would take them, but how do I claim the credits the mission promised me? I can't trade it in at either of the stations involved with this.

All VA is doing is activating keypresses, so If you could come up with a sequence of keypresses that could do it, yeah. I don't know if the game supports direct navigation like that, though.

I plan on using VA mainly for things that I can't fit onto my HOTAS, especially since I also plan to play in the Rift, so I won't be able to see my keyboard. So even with all the buttons at my fingers, I'll probably still end up with thirty or forty commands.

You can string commands together, though, so VA will push those buttons in sequence with a single command. "Get me out of here" could disable flight assist, boost, and then kick in the jump drive. "Come at me bro" could deploy weapons and then send power to weapons and shields in whatever balance you set up.

There's still some stuff that's in the ship's menus that doesn't seem to be available as a keypress, though. If you're going for silent running and want to cut power to engines (i.e. turn them completely off), I think you still have to go into the menus to do it, and that's where VA doesn't quite hack it since there's no direct key commands to do it. They may eventually add that, though, since a lot of people (myself included) plan on using VA heavily with this game.

So my HOTAS X was available to pick up from Umart way earlier than I expected, grabbed it yesterday and had a great little ride around on the tutorial last night. Got my ass handed to me by the AI enemy you verse, need to work out controls a bit better.

I was mind blown when I logged in the first time, the skybox is insane and the quality is just...jeez.

Looks good to me and I'm still in the "tutorial" area.

Playing this at 4k, everything maxed. SLI support isn't in the game yet, so I'm running it off of one Titan Black.

Typically in the 45-50fps area. Takes about 3.2GB VRAM. When I turn sometimes I notice dips which is odd. But other than that it's nice and smooth.

Yeah I was surprised at just how good the tutorial zone is, yet to get out of there as this stupid sidewinder is far too tough for my slow reactions.

i bitched a few posts up about that mission and as soon as i posted about it got him. the missions that follow seem easier..

A streamer, GeekDomo, has his set up to where it will request docking for him when he gives the command. In order for it to work though he has to be in the menu already. For him this just consists of looking at it because he uses trackIR. I'm assuming that you can do the same for locking destinations.

Things that require going a little deeper into the menus require more work, especially if they don't have a hot key attached.

It was my first wall I hit too, but once you get a hold of the controls and play around with the systems a bit it's far easier. Doing that mission now after having spent some time with the whole game is reeeeaaaly easypeasy :)

Well GAF, it's two in the morning here but I'm stupidly hyped after watching Scott Pilgrim so I bought this and pre-ordered a Rift.

Hmm.. Wondering if my next ship is a Type 6 or a Cobra Mk III... So it's either more ferrying or if I get bored and want to kill some pirates... Type 6 has the longest jump range so far I think.

Type 6 and 9 have basically the same jump range but since the Type-9 can have much much more Cargo the Type 6 will have better range most of the time.

I suggest you take The Cobra to try it, even if it won't take that long to Upgrade to the Type-6.

I'm at 300k so just deciding which I want to upgrade to and what I want to do next. Lol Imma miss my Hauler though.

I think that's the only newsletter I've read from Frontier that didn't have info for upcoming features. I guess they're too busy getting ready for presentations.

Yeah its not much info. Only news about upcoming things is the added depth of perception.
