Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

I hope Ness gets a Ninten alt. Untucked his shirt a bit, adjust his hat angle, move his eyes a little and reverse the pattern on his shirt and you've gotten all three Mother main characters in smash and basically the entire series represented.

I could at the very least see Sakurai doing a palette for Ninten.

How do we know that that's Palutena's default move set? She hasn't been playable in any thing, so...?

People think the roster is ok right now as is? They're crazy then.

Nah man. I love the roster as is now. Of course, I do want my Mother character. Falco and Meta Knight too. But I mean, who isn't expecting them back?

Have we ever speculated on other characters custom movesets that haven't been announced yet? I don't know how often I'll use custom movesets (maybe to keep single player trophy farming more fresh or local co-op matches with friends) but for some reason it makes me really excited to learn all the characters move variations. Really interested to see how they change up people like Link (an up-b that you can move on the ground with like Mario's old down b?) Samus (what will they do with Screw attack? Just different properties?) Olimar and Pikmin (one of the ones I'm most interested in learning) Diddy (multiple banana peels that don't last as long, one large banana peel that disappears after one trip?) what are other moves you've wondered about?

One of Captain Falcon's colours is based on a advert.

Oh yeaaaaaah...

There is a (small) chance...

Mother 1 fan art is... weird in Google Search.

I have a feeling that it's more likely that we wouldn't get any veterans from POTD, and we would get Ness/Lucas, Metaknight, Ice Climbers and Wario from Smash Direct 2, just like Zero Suit Samus, Sheik, Yoshi and Charizard in Smash Direct.

Heh, the only trouble I have at first glance is that none of the down-Bs really grab me, but it's a bit early to say that with any real conviction and I can see myself trying to find ways to get the counter to work anyway just because I'm usually pretty good at reading opponents :3

Celestial Fireworks looks like the best one to me because it looks like the only real attack Palutena can have for a down-B. The only other options are a counter or a buff, which I worry would leave her lacking offensively.

Tetris may seem obvious, but it is a third party title in regards to the Tetris licence. So while Nintendo owns the rights to the GB game they'd still have to get permission to use it. I mean I don't think it's that hard since they were allowed to release it on VC and even had permission for the music in Brawl (despite being public domain, the Tetris Company holds the rights for videogame appearances). Luckily there are other puzzle substitutes Nintendo can use like Dr. Mario.

Good point. I think I'd actually prefer Dr. Mario to Tetris, especially if the Chill or Fever tunes return. Not to mention it's a perfect excuse to put the Doc back on the roster, at least as a Mario alt.

It's not filter. Kirby and Dedede had gameboy color alt in Brawl, and It's back in Smash 4! :D You can tell by looking at Dedede's Hammer since Hammer isn't in monochrome.

Kind of odd that Kirby just gets a straight black/white color scheme while Dedede gets a scheme much more accurate to the original Game Boy screen.

How do we know that that's Palutena's default move set?
We don't :3 It's just that those moves are listed as 'special attack 1' for the respective inputs so most are making an educated guess that means it's the default version. We could be wrong :D

I'm even more interested in how they handle clones/variants. Will Marth and Lucina have the same customs or different ones? Assuming the space furries return I'm curious to see how they'll handle their specials without causing too much overlap too :o

I think the black and white Kirby is supposed to represent the box art, not the filter applied to the Gameboy.

Edit - Ninja'd

How do we know that that's Palutena's default move set? She hasn't been playable in any thing, so...?

Her and Pit were featured in this week's famitsu smash column. So that's how we know their default moves and variations. It's been running for a couple weeks now, and how we know most of the custom moves that we do know.

The problem I have with Celestial Firework is that a lot of it's function is covered with her Up-B Smash. Admittedly, the CF at least has dragon punch properties (it has invincibility frames) so it could be used as a reversal of sorts where the Up-B couldn't so there's that I guess. I dunno, aside from that it's just a bit too similar to sit right with me XD

Come on guys, you must be crazy thinking this roster is perfect the way it is D:

No Ness! No Lucas! No Wario! No Falco AND Wolf!

I'm ok with that myself. No strong attachment to any of those guys, despite having played all of their games. However, a lot of those guys are coming back, so I'm not concerned.

I'd like a few more newcomers though.

WOW, that was pretty selfish attitude you having there. I don't really care about most of the characters but I still want them in the game just sake for other peoples who love them. Also It would feel weird to see characters just disappeared from the game, like Mewtwo did.

Yeah, I want every character to return because more characters means more people reuniting with their favorites, more people discovering new favorites, more opponents to battle, more variety in the roster, etc. Character cuts are always lame. No one wins when a character is cut.

I don't see what's so selfish about not caring for a character returning. It's not the same as advocating a character should be cut because "I don't like them."

I already said I wanted them back because other people do. I don't want meltdowns. I'd prefer no one got cut if it was possible.

I'm just saying, if for some craaaazy reason they cut it off right now, I'd be ok with the roster from a personal enjoyment standpoint. I have everything I want.

Bingo. I'm not selfish, I'm just stating my contentment with the current roster.

To be clear, I'm not angry when people are selfish this way... but it -is- selfish, in the sense of, "Well, I got what I wanted, so I'm not affected if others don't get what they want."

Like me personally, I don't care about Ness or Lucas, but I really, really, REALLY want them to be confirmed because I know many people are passionate about them. Likewise, I bet there are people who don't care about Snake, but they still want him to come back so people like myself will be happy. It's just a desire to see your fellow gamers happy. :-)

I honestly don't want any Brawl people cut, and never really wanted the Melee cuts either. People spend years getting used to those characters and growing attached to playing as them and it sucks that they have to lose them. I didn't use Snake much in Smash (I really sucked with him), but I love MGS games and loved having him there. Nothing made me happier than all the codecs for each character in the game. I'd love to see them return.

Yeah, ultimately I'd hate to see anyone go. Even if I can't stand to play as Ice Climbers or Kirby or especially Yoshi, that doesn't mean I'd want them gone. I want everyone back, including Mewtwo. But Snake, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Mewtwo are looking unlikely at this point.

Yeah, this is basically how I feel about it.

Being okay with a character not being in the game isn't the same was wanting that character cut. For example, I never played as Wolf, so if he was cut, it wouldn't bother me too much. Now, I understand that other people really liked Wolf and would be bummed if he was gone, but it wouldn't bother me personally because I have no attachment to the character - I wouldn't feel what someone who mained Wolf would feel if he was gone. But that doesn't mean my attitude is, "fuck y'all, as long as I get my character, I don't care how anyone else feels," or that I want any character to get cut. It's simply that some cuts wouldn't upset me nearly as much as other cuts.

For Snake situation, it's pretty headache to deal with because of Nintendo Purists. At least, they lost the war because we already got three third party characters in the game, however they might win a battle this time tho. The War of Snake.

I feel ya. Opposing Snake because he's not "pure Nintendo" is a sad attitude to have. Sakurai legitimized him as an honorary Nintendo character the moment he made Snake playable in Brawl. Once a Smash Brother, always a Smash Brother, I say, regardless of whether one makes the roster for SSB4. This game's roster will be poorer for his absence, though, if that's how it works out. Snake brings such a unique blend of heroism and humor, of realism and absurdity that you can't get anywhere but the Metal Gear franchise.

The other third party characters are very much iconic in a style similar to Nintendo's. They're all iconic for their classic games, around the time of (or with Pac Man, even before) Nintendo's glory days.

Snake is more known with his modern games and realistic design. Yeah, there were MSX/NES games, but that's not what Solid Snake is about at this point. He definitely seems to me like he clashes with the rest of the game. Especially when considering the more serious and westernized direction that newer MGS games seem to be taken (still planning to play GZ sometime, so maybe I'm totally off base here)

But it's in kind of a good way. He's a wacky but lovable addition to the roster.

I would imagine that some of people didn't see some arguments about Sonic and Pac Man being in Smash Bros. Only third party character that I have seen Nintendo Purists being content with is Mega Man because it's 8-bit Mega Man.

Yeah, I understand some people's points about Snake/MGS being in Smash, but his moveset is soo unique that I don't really want to lose trap master archetype in Smash Bros. I admitted that I haven't really play and complete any MGS games in the franchise.

Snake is an instantly recognizable videogame icon, straight from the homeland of Japan and renowned the world over. He's no more out of place, stylistically, than Link or the Fire Emblem characters.

He's more unique for the tone he brings. But what a tone it is! Aethestically, it's gritty realism with a bit of anime flair, and the series trades in philosophy and weighty sociopolitical issues. But it balances it with levity, warmth and humor. And I love the fact you can play Snake as a complete pacifist in every game, and the game rewards you accordingly. I think that's part of why I love Snake so much.

I'd really miss him if he's cut. I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut, because we haven't seen him yet, but I'd be disappointed.

You're just a saint, aren't you? Fair enough.

Seeing my two favorite video game characters (Wario and Snake) playable in the same game is still really amazing to me. If Snake is cut, his absence will always be noticeable to me. I owe it to Brawl for getting me into the MGS franchise.

It's a shame. I'm not really expecting him to be back, but honestly? I want him to be in more than any newcomer.

Just checked in. Yeah, I was in the area apartment hunting and had time to kill before plans with the potential Mr. Prog, so I just went to Zenith to hang out.

I don't mean to come off like I'm white-knighting, nor do I mean to sound judgmental of anyone. I'm not. I'm just critiquing the attitude some have where they're apathetic or even pleased when characters are cut.

I just think everyone loses when characters are cut. Someone loses a character that really made them happy and that served as their main connection to the game... The roster is less varied, less interesting... And it doesn't do the player base any favors, which ultimately means less people for everyone to play with and against.

I don't expect it, but I would LOVE for everyone from Brawl to come back, plus Mewtwo from Melee. And hey, if they can swing it, bring back the cut clones from Melee, as well. :-)

Thats why Smash Snake should have been

Fit the tone and was actually on a Nintendo system.

True enough with the first paragraph. I can understand the purists perspective, but I think it's a bit much.

Agreed, it really is a cool moveset. And you should check out MGS sometime! It's pretty fun.

I guess this is just a matter of my limited perspective... but I've never really seen Snake as iconic. I can't really argue that he isn't though, otherwise he would never have been in Smash Bros (regardless of how many phone calls Kojima made). I don't look at him and immediately recognize a gaming icon though. I see (the representation of) a person. He just looks like a guy. All the other characters that have been in Smash Bros. have this whimsical cartoon character sort of style going for them. Fire Emblem people are a good counter example, but they're definitely much more anime looking than Snake. I think more than anything, the fact that his series tries to handle philosophical and sociopolitcal issues is what makes me feel like he doesn't belong. I've never associated those kinds of things with video games. Maybe that's what sort of draws me toward Nintendo games.

But I'm sort of spitting comments into the wind here. I absolutely agree with most of your points, especially the last half of your post. Being able to play pacifist is great, and he really should come back.

I wouldn't mind some of the cut Melee clones coming back (Pichu, Roy), but is there really any need for Dr. Mario to be his own character? I'm sure most people would be satisfied with him as an alt for Mario.

As for me, the only character I really want back from Melee is Mewtwo. He was fun to play as. I think he has a chance; if he's not in the base game, there's always the possibility of DLC.
