Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

I spent some time configuring my Logitech extreme pro 3d flightstick and g13 to work with this yesterday amd I'm glad I did. Feels so much more natural with a flightstick.

I played the original on the c64 back in the day and I have to say this new version is evoking the feels in exactly the same way it did back then. All I'm doing is the same trade run over and over again but it's amazing. Hyperspace effects are stellar, the super cruise once I figured it out even feels "space epic"

Couple of questions.

I'm getting ready to buy a hauler. WIll that cause me to lose my sidewinder? Can I move equipment from one to the other? Is there anyway to turn off the cockpit for screenshots?

While I can dock with no issues I feel a docking computer is essential for that classic Elite/2001 blue danube experience.

You'll lose the sidewinder and any kit fitted but their value will be counted towards the cost of the hauler.

Eg. When I was in a type-6 the Anaconda showed up as 6.8mil but in my type-9 its 3mil ish

I quite liked the FFE missions because they took you well outside of civilized space (Pleione was in grid 32,32 and Polaris was 0,76, where most human settlement stopped around +-15,+-15 or so). It was essentially a primer on how to explore without needing to dock up for fuel.

That said, the unique ship you got had a monstrous hyperdrive (Class 4 Military?).

Plus, the Thargoid ship you could get was utterly ridiculous. Unfortunately they had fixed the bug from FE2 which caused little pockets of civilization to appear all throughout the galaxy, so while you could jump ludicrous distances there really was no point to it.

I think FFE did have some bugged inhabited systems way out there. There was also the bug where you could do a 640ly jump on 1t of fuel, so it was possible to go look.

Naturally, you won't be able to do this in ED.

So, I spent some of yesterday finally getting round to learning the basics of Elite. Holy crap, this could be my GOTY, easily. It's one of the best games I've played in some years. I think this might actually be what I wanted Star Citizen to be in the beginning.

I don't know where to start. The audio and visuals are just sublime. It handles beautifully with my X55, like it was made for it. The combat is so dramatic and intense - I'm 1 for 1 so far and it was an epic battle.

So far I'm doing little trade runs back and forth, doing meat and fish, and having a blast. I'll be up to a Hauler in no time.

I need an Oculus Rift.

Does anyone know of a good tutorial to get your computer to talk to you? I've got VA set up for some commands but I have no idea how to get my computer to respond to me like I have seen streamers do.

That's one of the features in VA.
When you are editing a command, go to "Other" and select "Say Something with Text-To-Speech" from the drop-down. You can type in the text you want the computer to say when the command is triggered.

Those who have the computer talk back to them do have another plugin with some voice samples they put within the VA commands. So basically they scripted their computers responses themself

Makes sense. When I did the say thing I only get a response from the generic windows voice. My issue is getting the computer to say it and not windows.

not sure if posted yet but

From the EULA
The Game may incorporate technology (which may be provided by Frontier or third party service providers engaged by Frontier (each a "Dynamic Advertising Provider")) which enables advertising to be uploaded into the Game on your PC, and changed while the Game is being played on-line. In order that the Dynamic Advertising Provider is able to direct advertising appropriate to your Game and geographic region, as well as to the correct location within the computer game, certain non-personally identifiable data and information may be retrieved and retained by the Dynamic Advertising Provider including your I.P. address, geographic location, in-game position, and information concerning the appearance of advertising visible during your gameplay (for example, the length of time an item of advertising was visible, the dimensions of the advertisements). In addition, the Dynamic Advertising Provider may assign a unique identification number which is stored on your PC and which is used to monitor and calculate the number of views of dynamic advertising during gameplay. None of the information collected for this purpose including the identification number can be used to identify you.

As far as I know you won't be able to get the actual in-game computer voice to say what you want, if that is what you mean. However, depending on your version of Windows there are various text-to-speech voices available, some better than others. Further, you can play .wav files you've created in advance instead of doing text-to-speech in real-time. Some people use real pre-recorded voices (see this).

I'm in Azeban City trying to do a mission which requires me to deliver 1 Hel-static furnace. I have no idea where to find this, and it's not listed on the commodities market.

EDIT: One more question--how do I name my CMDR?

have you tried Bootis? Its one jump away and i think it has them (cant guarantee it but i think i bought some there or close to there).

That's basically exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

So disappointed to see this.. I'm one of those guys that have backed Braben and Elite since the start, Frontier II was my favorite Amiga game back in the days. I also backed the Kickstarter the moment I saw it, and also of course already bought the expansion pack.. But if this is actually set in motion for paid customers I will never mention Elite Dangerous in a positive light again, put Braben and Frontier behind me and never look back. Fuck this shite.

Edit: Perhaps I'm overreacting. Maybe this is a "just in case" scenario.. There was some ads in Elite II, but I hope that kind of thing is over now that we've helped them to get this game going.

Try using the galactic map to see what system exports the commodity you are interested in... It requires some time but it's pretty accurate, i found it to be a lot less time consuming than asking online and waiting for an answer.

For naming your commander go to https://support.orerve.net/ in the "Commander Profile" tab... That's how i did it...

You have to go to this site listed in the forums, https://support.orerve.net/ and then to the commander profile tab. If you don't go to the forums there is no real way of knowing that unfortunately.

Thanks for answering my questions. I got interdicted by another Sidewinder and almost took that asshole out; he even had a bounty on him. His name is Bryant if anyone wants to go fuck him up for me.

Hey guys... I'm new to playing flight games like this, but the DK2 piqued my interest and now I'm all in.

I'm planning on buying the Saitek X52 Pro. Does this game support rudder pedals? What exactly are they used for?

Yes, it supports rudder pedals. I suppose most people would map yaw to the pedals since the primary stick is most useful for pitch and roll*. The X52 has a twist feature so you can put yaw there if you'd rather not buy rudder pedals.

*Unlike many of the older space sims, Elite's ships have a very slow yaw. Putting it on your primary stick is wasting an axis.

Would you say using rudder pedals adds to the experience? I don't mind spending the extra money if it's worthwhile.

That was an NPC. Player names start with CMDR.

The hell is up with all these timeouts on docking requests?

The stations take NPC docking into account as well so it might be temporarily full.

Just bought the Type-6. Huge is an understatement. I fucking love docking with it. Space ports are even more impressive because the canopy itself is so open and big that I can see much more.

Edit: I equipped a point defense turret for my Type-6. Do those work automatically? I'm trying to look for chaff launchers now as well for my Type-6 but can't find it.

I am actually holding off playing this game. Having waited for so, so long, most of the time without expecting it to happen, I want the full experience.

But you people sharing your experiences make it so hard. :D

So unless absolutely necessary I no longer need to touch any sort of controls once I make the jump to a station. I boost with my voice to get into range of the station, request docking with my voice, and then when I find the port I let it auto dock. VA is pretty great for this game.

Are you using another program for that or you can actually program voice commands in the game?

Voice Attack There is a free trial you can use for 21 days. The full program is only 8 bucks. Both ED and SC work with it perfectly. Basically you type a statement that you want to say into the program and then choose what keystrokes that statement causes the program to hit. You can use it for just one (saying warp speed hits the J key to jump systems for example) or you can program it to hit more than one key.

I have it set up so that once I am in range to request docking, I just say my phrase and the game will automatically go into the navigation panel, scroll over, and request docking for me. The keystrokes I use for that command are something like, left shift-right arrow-right arrow-space-down arrow-space-left shift. Those keystrokes get me into the panel and back out again without having to hit a single key myself.

I honestly haven't put enough time into the game to judge. An unresolved framerate stutter is interfering with my DK2 setup and I don't want to play without it.

I think they need to be assigned to a fire group...

Does anyone know why I can't discharge my heat sink sometimes? I know that you dump it and then it takes a while to come back, but it doesn't seem to come back that often.

Now that i understand the game better im having lots of fun in the beta, but i cant help the feeling that maybe when the game is out it dies a silent dead, i mean for them continue to development they will need more money (since there kickstarter didnt fetch that much over what they needed). So lets hope the game sells well, but im afraid it will be a niche thing. To bad because i would really liked to see the planet landing stuff.

Guys...

this game is fucking awesome. Why do space sims make me feel so good? My life just feels right now that a joystick is a part of it once again.

Why do you have that feeling? It raised over 2 million and is loved by lots of people around the world. It also has a pretty great history to go on.
