Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

So let's gather a list of the confirmed-but-not-confirmed veterans so far:

- Mr. Game & Watch (Pac-Man trailer)
- Meta Knight (Miita Knight)
- Ness (items)
- Wario (series icon, assist trophies)
- Ice Climbers (polar bears)

Anyone else?

I seriously wish Sakurai has someone on staff who will go out of their way to bring the best Miiverse posts to his attention.

Pretty confident these guys including Dorf, Puff, Wolf, Falco, and ROB are back 100%.

Only characters I would say we should be iffy on returning are PKMN Trainer, Lucas, and Snake.

I'm pretty iffy on ROB and either Wolf or Falco (I think at least one is 100% coming back, not sure on which). There's no way Pokemon Trainer is back since transformations are out. And Snake's good as out - they would advertise him with the rest of the 3rd party characters if he was in. It helps sell the game.

Frankly, I'm not sold on Ice Climbers, since Rosalina and Olimar seem to cover the interesting mechanics of those two already. Polar Bears be damned. They could just be a cool reference for Smash Run and nothing more.

Definitely agree with your viewpoints for the most part BUT I do think you should give the Ice Climbers a little bit more credit here. Yeah, Rosalina and Olimar have interesting mechanics with multiple characters per player but they're still unique in that both Popo and Nana work together as two wholes of one character. Rosalina and Olimar are a bit different because when I played Rosalina at both E3, Best Buy, and SDCC, I noticed she had more of a "puppeteer" feel to her playstyle compared to the Ice Climbers. Olimar is way different as well, because he relies on the Pikmin. If you're willing, you can totally ditch the other Ice Climber and go solo.

I would definitely count PKMN Trainer out. As for the others...meh, I could definitely see Sakurai looking to make some minor tweaks to the characters to make sure the roster is a little beefy in volume. If anything, WOLF would be he most likely one to cut but apparently Sakurai planned for him to be in Smash before Brawl.

Snake? Who knows. Maybe he could be kept as a surprise since people might want to believe he's gone since Pac Man stepped in. This is Smash...you never know.

Have you played the demo by any chance?

Beautiful. This is all beautiful. Sakurai I fucking love you.
Anyway, this pic is AMAZING. I hope also assist trophies get their masks.

There might be some overlap if they do use every available hat, but I'm not sure if there are going to be all that many created for the game.

I am honestly surprised that people think any character with a unique moveset is going to get cut at this point. And since except for Falco and Ganondorf, every yet-to-be-revealed Brawl vet has a unique moveset, with just Wolf and Lucas having very minor and superficial moveset similarities, and enough differences to consider them unique characters (Wolf especially, since his specials are even more different from Fox's than Lucas' are from Ness').
And I really doubt that at this point, Falco or Ganondorf are going to get cut, simply because they have that legacy going, and Ganondorf also is a super popular character.

ROB, Ice Climbers, Jigglypuff etc. all are going to come back. I don't get why so many people want them to be axed, or think they're in any serious danger to be.

The only characters I can see getting axed are Snake if they can't get the license back and the other 2 Pokemon Trainer Pokemon if Sakurai wants to spread it more across the series instead of having like 2/3 of the Pokemon roster be composed of Gen 1.

If Toon Link can come back, and if we can get an entirely new clone character with Lucina, then I'm sure we're going to get all the unique and semi-clone characters back.

Hmmm, I may have to re-think Ice Climbers then. I didn't get to play the demo, so your insight on Rosalina has given me more to think about. Sakurai only ever included the IC because of the potential for a unique mechanic. If the mechanic is still unique, they could still be in. Although I don't know why he's waited so long to reveal them if they're in. They would be a weird choice for an unlockable character, since they've been unlocked from the start in the last two.

But still, your description of Rosalina makes me think they might not be as similar as I thought.

Obviously Ganondorf will come back; I just hope he isn't a clone. He needs his own moveset, and it's overdue.

Of all the "No way they'll ever get cut" characters, I think Ice Climbers are probably the least safe, purely because of the fact that Sakurai specifically said that they would be a challenge for the 3DS.

IIRC that was something the article quoting Sakurai added on its own, not straight from the horse's mouth.

I guess being able to have their faces mostly covered up makes them look less stupid/out of place, but I'm still glad I'm never going to have to see them online.

Uh, no, that's not what he said. The part that was outright naming the Ice Climbers was added by the author of the article that recapped that interview, and it's by now assumed that Sakurai meant transformation characters like Zelda - the wording on that was ambiguous for interpretation in that regard.

The fact we have one of the 2 "buddy mechanic" characters come back (Olimar), and a whole new one (Rosalina) seems to heavily suggest that he was not referring to that character type, anyway. I don't see that we would get Rosalina & Luma if the Ice Climbers were "a challenge", given the fact that Rosalina's mechanic is even more complex than the Ice Climbers'.
Meanwhile, transformations have been entirely axed.

Ice Climbers have more polygons and Nana has her own AI. They're not equivalent. That said, I still think they're in. Worst case, they're replaced by Chorus Kids.

It's not. I don't want to go into detail, but it's not. Out of Nana, Pikmin and Luma, Luma may be the most complicated to explain, but it's the least complicated in terms of implementation.

The passage from the IGN interview reads as follows:
Sakurai did tell me that “multiple character” combatants like the Ice Climbers were proving a technical challenge on the 3DS.
IC's are directly referenced by name. So take that however you will.

Corocoro comes out tomorrow. I can't believe no one even tried to leak the Smash info.

Maybe there's no (new) info.

I don't think a second Ice Climber has any bearing when it comes to polygon terms, and Nana's AI is not that complicated, at least not much more than Luma's.

Which I already addressed:

"multiple character combatants" can mean transformation characters as well.

I would imagine that a realistically modelled character like ganondorf or Samus probably has more polygons than both Ice Climbers. Just guessing.

Someone actually posted in this thread that each Ice Climber has about half the polygons compared to other fighters.

All else being equal, it's cheaper to move one mesh of size N than two meshes of size N/2. There are some tricks you can do with vertex buffers, but I don't think they would work in ICs case.

In any case, I think ICs are the most demanding characters in Melee. I remember 4x ICs being laggy.

Four times Zelda-Sheik lags like crazy when they transform. Same with Zelda-Sheik and Pokemon Trainer in Brawl.

Ice Climbers lag more consistently though.

Is that true? Didn't seem like it.

I'd imagine Mr. Game and Watch would have the least polygons.

Yeah it's true but that's not necessarily the main issue with ICs, Nana's AI is more complex than luma or pikmin.

Also G&W isn't 2D if that's what you were saying, he's a flattened 3D model, he probably does still have one of the lowest polycounts though.

That's just because they're trying to load 4 things at once, not really the same as ICs constantly having to have up to 4 players with up to 4 separate AIs at the same time.
