To be fair, I would imagine a healthy portion of SWAT are wearing similar outfits more and more.

Also, I thought this photo was on a aircraft carrier at first glance.
 
My ultimate fear is some rookie is going to get scared and accidentally shoot someone then the other cops confused will open fire on everyone...like so many movie depict.

how about a veteran? Its not just rookies shooting people to death all the time. These guys can't wait to flex their power over people.

I think it's far more likely for someone in the crowd to fire off a round at someone or into the air, provoking the police to fire back in typical police ratios (1,000 bullets+).

I'm sure some of these cops would love nothing more than an excuse.

The rookies are in the front lines with riot gear on and batons. Usually they bring the people from the academy and place them in the front. The vets and special units like swat are usually the ones with the live ammo in these situations.

No it isn't, this is just the assemble area of SWAT. The Swat of multiple municipalities are just standing there in that pic with their hands in their pockets. Just waiting to be called or for something to happen.

Problem with this is there was a riot two days ago. They will not leave large crowds unattended. Nobody wants to move.

When this is all over I can't wait to hear all the accounts of dissent from the good cops who opposed the military occupation of a small midwestern town.
 
I'm all for predominantly black neighborhoods being policed by a black police force. A majority white police force has no business policing black neighborhoods. The average white person in the U.S. already has unreasonable fear of black people, and giving them guns and police power over blacks is a toxic combination.

A black police force will not change the institutional problems like the prison industrial complex, quotas, or the disproportionate amount of black people in jail. But it will at least mitigate some of the the trigger happy "this nigger's probably armed and dangerous" mentality that whites walk into certain situations having.

Now that there is a second witness corroborating Johnson's frightening account, the Justice Department and FBI definitely need to fully take over Mississipi Burning style at this point. The local department is obviously trying to lie and do a coverup with the officer's sob story and simply handing it over to the county/other jurisdiction isn't going to do anything to diffuse the situation or ensure a proper investigation. This is a hate crime and a cowardly, disgusting execution carried out by a criminal pure and simple and the officer in question needs to be fired and tried for murder as soon as possible.

Hopefully this case will finally bring properly harsh, nation wide application of the law against this decades old, festering problem. Seriously, what on earth is going on? There are surely still a lot of good cops out there and there's always been bad cops but it seems like now more than ever there is a huge increase in hot tempered, power mad thugs in uniform who should never have been hired to begin with who think they can kill unarmed people with impunity. Hopefully this will put pressure on the Eric Garner murder in NY and cases elsewhere.

Edit: Wow, St. Louis deciding to bring militarization of the police to the forefront now too?? These images are scary.

The police are basically being equipped with military gear. It's happening all over the country and it's very alarming.

It's police. A lot of surplus military material gets sold off/loaned to these guys so it doesn't get immediately scrapped.

There's actually a fight going on in a Michigan township where the chief of police has gone overboard with the amount of stuff he's got, all in the name of "defending against terrorism."

They were stupid enough to handle it the way they originally did, they're not going to be smart enough to handle it better unless a larger authority steps in and kicks them to the curb.

That's SWAT, it's how they dress. What you are seeing is the different of SWAT teams of different towns, cities, and municipalities assembled together. Otherwise you would just see 5 armed like that and the rest in regular uniform or riot gear.
