Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

Police in full military gear and vehicles were pointing their weapons (non-lethal though they may be) at a crowd of peaceful protesters. Just think about that. Who is escalating and who is de-escalating this situation?

He has no authority over State and local cops. So he can say all he wants and he will get laughed at because it's considered a State Issue. Right now the only ones that can quickly do something are either the Mayor or Governor. The President deals with Federal level crap, Governor deals with local crap.

The same ones calling this a Police State Action will likely also criticize Obama if he were to step in. (Alex Jones and pals.)

When state and local authorities are failing miserably and the constitution being violated its no longer a state issue.

Also by your logic, no one should give shit to Bush about Katrina.

And I'm out, Maddow is talking about Iraq for too long. I hope for a peaceful resolution tonight or tomorrow to the situation.

I'm very interested on how this has all been handled media wise. Will be even more interested seeing who "shows up" tomorrow morning and the media circus that will begin.

Unfortunately, with this being the central issue, I feel stories like this (from all sides) will continue to happen.

Ya. I assume the White Male didn't get jumped because he was just in the area but because the people protesting saw a white dude (IMO). Unfortunately the police are definitely not helping the matter. With strong response you will continue to get incidents where race is a factor. You are only creating more tension with heavy-handed responses. And the cycle will continue. I hope the President makes some remarks on this.

Anyone have bullet points on what he said?

“We've had protesters, like the last few nights, who are unwilling to listen tonight,” Chief Belmar said earlier. Belmar praised officers for their restraint in the face of another tense night. "To maintain that restraint, it is, frankly, remarkable."

It isn't as easy as just jumping in the fray and saying "Hey you cops, cut it out". There is a bunch of red tape to go through to actually make any kind of dent in this.

He could make that exact same statement and replace Egypt with ferguson and it would be better than what's happened so far.

Of course if he does do that people will be frothing at the mouth to be the first accuse him of stoking the fires of race wars.

When will people stop using this as an excuse for Obama's frailty? Like does his term have to end or what.

Don't want to turn this topic into Obama bashing, just saying he can say and do a lot more than people give credit. He's just not that kind of person and it's making things worse.

I really don't...God, this is so fucked up.

Even tho she wasn't talking about this, Rachel had some interesting points about boots on the ground in north Iraq. Off topic but I had the channel still on
MSNBC was pretty excellent from 10PM-12AM EST.

Yea they have been pretty good. The lack of news stations and reports from down there is also kind of shocking...well, maybe not.

And the first story you will hear will be about the white guy walking his dog who just got put into the hospital by the protestors.

Ahh that is where that quote came from. Thanks dude.

anything new from the governor after that school tweet?
Hey, he said he was visiting Ferguson tomorrow. What more do you people want?

What is this, community service? Should he wear an orange vest and sweep the streets too?

And yes, that blaring sound you're hearing is your sarcasm detector overheating.

Or it's the cops with their LRADs. One of the two.

PoliceOne, to protect and serve:

Throughout all of this I've actually been too scared to go and see what they were saying about this. Fucking scumbags as usual.

Is there supposed to be some overarching point this is supposed to prove apart from that community is full of shitheels?

It should be noted that it's a community full of shitheels who all happen to be verified law enforcement professionals.

PoliceOne, to protect and serve:

Yeah, I'm going to call it a night. One of these responses (Smeared1) cut me way too deep. I sincerely hope none of these people ever find out what it's like to live their lives in constant, imminent fear that authority figures will kill them over a slight misunderstanding.

He could make that exact same statement and replace Egypt with ferguson and it would be better than what's happened so far.

Egypt is a country of 80 Million, I don't know how many live in Ferguson. Issue with that is proportionality. In spirit though I agree with the sentiment.

That's a good question. I asked friends and family today if they had been following it and the majority said no.

Besides this thread and few small articles on news websites it's not getting to much exposure (IMO). On TV I see them mentioning the death and how it caused the riots and then they talk about the looting and stuff.

Because it isn't our country. The last thing you want to do is split your own country. Believe it or not (and trust me, it's hard to believe it), there are people in the US listening in on this, taking the side of the police. Obama has to take a side, but it isn't easy to do so without splitting the country and making things worse. He's already made comments on it, but there is too much to go through to make a full speech, and even more to tell the cops to stop.
