The federal government funds the Army, they do not fund local police and do not have the power to force local police to wear such things. I'm all for progress in policing but suggestions that have no basis in the reality of our structure of government aren't very helpful.

Hardly sounds like you're up for any progress if all you want to do is condemn the idea of cameras because of federal limits. As if it is literally the only way possible. You suggest absolutely nothing about how to get cameras on police, which is desperately needed. And again, as I said. We can use the Rialto PD as an example. They managed to do it just fine. Which you ignored originally to throw the whole idea out as ludicrous due to technical financial details. Police departments need to volunteer for it, and the money is available. There is no worry about the money in the USA. Much like when JP morgan donated millions of dollars to the NYPD. Investment can get into the hands of the police department, and it can be used however they need.

A federal third party would be best or some oversight. Any suggestions besides being literal about vague details of action?

So I have a question. I heard everything popped off because of a bottle. Was that Molotov Cocktail the 'bottle' they were talking about?

From what I was watching there was an earlier bottle thrown at one of the armored vehicles and that was the initial event that started the shit; the molotov came after that. But that's just what witnesses were saying, I don't think there was video.

Protesters don't have a right to be angry and request radical changes in the police/community unless they provide a proposal within legal limits as to how this would be accomplished.

If they can't do this, well then they should just shut up and go home.

Federal grants cannot be used to dictate that local police wear cameras.

Of course not.

Federal grants can only be used for stuff that local governments have a vested(pun?) interest in using them for.

Fuck outta here with the idea that monies can be diverted accordingly to certain needs.

Like federal grants can't be used to dictate a local drinking age?

Because the situations are completely comparable. No politician would risk letting a police force dry up because they don't want to wear lapel cameras. That would be political suicide.

ah, okay.

I was gonna say, if it was a Molotov, that is a significant difference. But, it appears it was just a regular bottle.

you were pretending it was inconceivable because of federal rules earlier. Now its not possible because of politicians.

Is this a joke or something?

So the police force would dry up because dirty cops wouldn't be allowed to be dirty anymore.

Interesting.

Federal grants provide money to local police departments however they are not the main source of funding for your local town PD. You could certainly tie the need to take certain grant money to the condition that you have to spend it on these cameras. It is of my opinion that a large number of PD's would opt out of receiving that funding and politicians who were behind it would be seen and portrayed as defunding police. Thus I think it would be political suicide.

That is how I view how video cameras being tied to federal grants would work out. With extreme resistance.

^^^the first molotov, which started tonight's festivities, was thrown by a 'peaceful protester' at 4 hours 14 minutes 32 seconds

bad move by the protestors.

RE: wife of police chief. she's a piece of work, but her views are a non-issue. everyone has the right to believe what they want; just as long as there's no conflict of interest. unless she works in the police department i see no issue.

They're asking them not to shoot black people all the time. They propose the police stop shooting so many black people to accomplish this goal.

Make them grants to the states as part of a big enough package and the local PD's aren't going to get much of a say.

In the current political climate, red states will just refuse the money. Just like they did with local aid in the bailouts, medicaid expansion from the ACA, and now school lunch funding.

State grants would make more sense but seeing as we didn't have the political will power to put limits on guns after elementary students were gunned down I don't have the optimism that this is going to be the event that garners what would most likely be necessary congressional support to make such a change.

That's exactly how I feel.

California police use of body cameras cuts violence and complaints
Body cameras worn by police in Rialto, California have resulted in better policing – and now other forces may follow sui
t

Upon returning to Rialto (city motto: "bridge to progress") he obtained $100,000 (£62,640) in state and federal funding for the Taser-made cameras – about $1,000 each – plus servers and fibre-optic cables. Each officer has his or her own camera, mounted on collars, spectacles or caps, and is expected to activate it during interactions with the public. Encounters are logged and uploaded to a secure digital cloud service, evidence.com.

Stop covering your ears and eyes and repeating its impossible to do.

So are we talking about capability, possibility or likelihood here? Because it seemed like you originally started with the position that the federal government doesn't fund local police, not that it's not politically unlikely.

Great California did it. That's going to solve the problem across the nation. California also expanded medicaid for which I applaud them. Red states will not do that.

Originally I was comparing the funding of local PD to the US Army in which the US Army is entirely funded directly by the federal government. I was not taking federal grants for local PD into consideration at the time.

Damn, Angry Fork has yall thrown. It was sarcasm, dude is like the biggest leftist revolutionary on the forum. I'm pretty sure just the other month he condemned politicians to being crushed underfoot by the masses for all their crimes against humanity.

Oh, well, might as well just forget about it then. Probably shouldn't have tried to expand Medicaid either.

When they said military grade they're talking about the equipment the police have that is of the same type the military uses. They weren't actually talking about the military's equipment.

These guys are the police:

Your points are meandering. And oddly enough, are now mirroring Angry Forks sarcasm. They used federal and state funding to pull it off. Its a model.

Red states weren't going to let blacks go to school or vote either. Things have a way of changing when effort instead of pathetic excuses are made. But it takes at least a budding attitude of possibility. I listed a multiple source of money that could get into the hands of PD's nation wide. You focused on one. State & Federal funding can solve the problem, and the rest of the states will be brought to modern times kicking and screaming as always.

I'm all for states taking initiative I however hold very little hope that any real change can be made across the country at the federal level in the foreseeable future given the political climate.

Why are some black celebs trying to remind me that this "goes beyond color"?

For some reason people keep trying to push the police brutality stuff into saying it's a war on poor people, or a danger to 'everyone', which it partly is, but for liberals to ignore the blatant, calculated, organized racism involved is bizarre. The degrees of violence are way different.

The stats on stop and frisk/prison inmates don't lie. There is and always has been a war on black/brown people by police and feds, even if white poor people are getting shat on too the racial aspect shouldn't be ignored.

These have to be the stupidest motherfuckers to ever wear a badge. What are you going to do, break their camera? Steal the tapes? You think you can get away with that?
