The Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC has become my favorite news show, despite not having watched it before. She has been on top of this mess for days now even when nobody else really was.

My assumption is that there is no way that they WOULDN'T release the autopsy if Mike Brown *wasn't* shot in the back.

All that "lets wait for the investigation to run its course" shit would go out the window if they had evidence that could calm the outrage.

The way he fell over also makes me think he was shot in the back

Whitehouse.gov petition for Mike Brown Law, to have all officers in all states, county and local where a camera.

This should get its own thread, considering how long and complex this one has become. The language and demands are obviously a bit much to translate directly into law, but considering how effective cameras have proven in reducing complaints and police aggression, it's worth signing just to make the issue gets brought to the fore.

She's usually very good, though occasionally she goes too far left for my taste.

I just tuned in but I agree. This is great coverage.

I hope that at least the people in charge the last few days are at least removed but they should all face criminal charges.

Antonio French ought to run for mayor.

The Ferguson police have brought down petitions.whitehouse.gov. Their corruption knows no bounds.

Wow. What is the point of police having these mine resistant vehicles? The amount of money it must cost to operate military vehicles when you shouldn't even need them is crazy.

yoooo this representative on Maddow talking about getting pulled over for a DWB

"your taillight is out", and then when they ran his name oops your light is actually on, have a nice night

On NPR today they said that some of these police departments can buy an MRAP for like $3000, which is dirt cheap for a vehicle like that. They said it's a special department that is setup specifically to get rip of military surplus. I'll try to find a real source instead of my "I heard thing" anecdote.

Ok if thats true it makes sense. For that cheap might as well figure out something to do with it. Cheaper than getting a van for the police. Its a crazy symptom of the military industrial complex though.

You wouldn't believe the amount of high tech sniper rifles that go to small police departments in small counties. Usually there is no one at the departments that is even trained to use them. They cost $1000's of dollars.

I didn't quote the whole thing. More at link.

The Pentagon has what it calls a “Disposition Services” department. Its mandate, quite simply, is to dispose of stuff. A list of what’s available includes night-vision goggles, combat uniforms, tear gas, grenades and M16s.

Robert Kane heads the department of criminology and justice studies at Drexel University, and he says the Defense Department has sold billions of dollars of equipment at bargain basement prices.

“You know, an armored personnel carrier can cost somewhere along the lines of $780,000, maybe even $800,000, and sometimes the police department can get that for $3,000,” he says.

There are also grants available, Kane says.

State and local police departments have dealt with the DOD for decades, but Congress formalized that relationship in the 1990s, during the war on drugs and after the Los Angeles riots.

“Law enforcement was in many instances outgunned and out-equipped from a technical standpoint,” says Jim Pasco, executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police.

After Sept. 11, departments acquired new surveillance equipment, along with new vehicles and weapons.
