Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

If you don't know if it's true then maybe you shouldn't be talking shit about a kid who got shot 10 times in the street with multiple eyewitnesses saying that he had his hands up when he was killed?

He wasn't a kid, he was 18, nor am I "talking shit" about him? I'd tell anyone that stealing and assaulting people/officers probably isn't a good idea anywhere, because bad stuff will likely happen.

But like earlier that's just what I've gotten from some post and news. I'll wait a few days for things to become more clear. I haven't seen anyone ever mention that he had his hands up when he died.

Cops better get their story straight

Her timeline the last few hours is making multiple points that have been repeatedly ignored. Why is this just now coming out? Why was Johnson not arrested? How is the two incidents linked if the stop wasn't related to the robbery? Why is there no report on the shooting?

Look. I'm sorry I'm pissing people off, and I'm not trying to justify the shooting (I think its a stupid policy), but I think its important to be aware of how the cops will try to justify the shooting.

The police released specific evidence to lead the trail away from their wrong doing. I hope the media focuses on their multiple attempts to misdirect attention rather than be transparent on the issue.

We need to have a candid race discussion as a nation.
We need to have a candid discussion on militarization of the police.
We need to have a candid discussion about poverty and how the poor are treated worse than those with wealth.

We also need to have a discussion about police culture that pits officers versus civilians.

Ha, oh man, people calling Nixon out for not being there minute one after this all broke. He's about to go off.

Again, is "Strong-Arm Robbery" an actual term or just some made up bullshit to sensationalize what Michael Brown actually did?

We need a candid discussion about a lot of things in this fucking country. :/

If that's how the cops try to justify it, that police officer is going to jail for the rest of his life

Ha, oh man, people calling Nixon out for not being there minute one after this all broke. He's about to go off.

I have no sympy for Nixon.

Actual term. Physical altercation, no weapons. It means any form of force occurred.

Isn't funny how cops only serve to protect themselves? We got more information from the cops about this unrelated robbery that might be Michael Brown than we have about the events surrounding his murder. The smear campaign is very real.

I've just been lurking, but is anyone following the logic from Zoe? I keep seeing, "why would he try to detain him through the window?" and "why would he confront them about jaywalking if it was about a robbery?"

We have no idea if he did so or not. We only have the one friend who says it was about jaywalking. However, said friend has also failed to mention they were likely just involved in a robbery.

NONE of that excuses being shot multiple times. Just pointing out how some people are seeing what they want possibly.
His friend did say that to the FBI according to MSNBC, which is really the only interview that matters. Furthermore, other witness accounts are basically in line with the interview he gave the day of the shooting. Furthermore, even if there was a struggle for the gun during the stop, once Brown runs away, AND turns to surrender, it becomes murder by the cop. None of this other shit matters. The multiple witness accounts match up, and the perp. officer should be arrested.

Agreed on Nixon. Dude sat down in Springfield and avoided this until he had no choice but to get involved. He stated he's "been on TV Wed. thurs. and today".

Wow, thanks for that clarification Nixon! Last I checked, Brown was killed on Saturday.

Guys: You don't need to advocate for the Devil. He's the Prince of Lies. He's the first being ever to persuade someone. He doesn't need your help.

What is strong arm robbery?

Strong-arm robbery is a term used to describe a situation where the offender used any degree of force to complete the act. Strong-arm robbery is technically a term used to describe the crime of "Robbery by sudden snatching." This crime's definition is detailed below:

812.131 - Robbery by sudden snatching

"Robbery by sudden snatching" means the taking of money or other property from the victim's person, with intent to permanently or temporarily deprive the victim or the owner of the money or other property, when, in the course of the taking, the victim was or became aware of the taking. In order to satisfy this definition, it is not necessary to show that:

The offender used any amount of force beyond that effort necessary to obtain possession of the money or other property; or

There was any resistance offered by the victim to the offender or that there was injury to the victim's person.

Okay, so what do you do in that two second window? Don't answer that by the way, because you've already thought about it for more than two seconds. ;)

Any cop who would make that two second decision should not be a cop and shouldn't even have a weapon. Thousands of cops every day manage not to shoot their suspects.

Has the FBI taken over this investigation or are they doing a separate investigation? Reviewing the thread, I know they are there but I was wondering what their role is at this point. I have 0% confidence in the local PD.

FBI has taken over the shooting incident.

Ask questions instead of arguing for the side you have no stake in. We've seen how they've justified it before and we'll see how they justify it when they inevitably do. We're just discussing events; not preparing for a deposition.

St. Louis county prosecutor is doing an investigation in parallel with the FBI. Local PD is pretty much out of the equation, officers are still there but under the command of the State highway patrol who reports directly to the governor.

Ha, oh man, people calling Nixon out for not being there minute one after this all broke. He's about to go off.

Ideally, the Governor shouldn't have to be involved. The city and county police departments should have been able to handle things.

Of course, even more ideally, this situation wouldn't have happened in the first place.

So basically, you're not keeping up with the news and you want to come in here with this bullshit?

Next time you're thinking about playing the devils advocate, don't.

Mm.

Don't do it. If you have a viewpoint, present it as your own. Don't try to play games by saying, "This isn't what I think; I just wanted to argue the other side." There's more than enough representation of views on all sides without people further muddying the waters by arguing things they don't even believe - or more typically, things they do believe, but want to argue for without other people knowing they believe them.

Ok. I'm going to play the devils advocate for a minute here. I know this is likely to piss a bunch of people off, but I feel the cops side of the story is not being represented. For the record.....Yes I am a white guy from the suburbs, and no I don't think its ok to shoot anybody in the back while they are running away.

The cop is responding to a report of a strong arm robbery. He sees a group of kids walking down the street that match the description, pulls over to question them, gets into an altercation with Brown. Brown pushes him into his car and a shot is fired during the struggle, at which point Brown gets startled and runs off. The officer shoots him as he is running away. Now, I've always been under the impression that cops are trained to refrain from shooting if they can, but once the first shot is fired they shoot to kill and shoot until the target is down. In this context, wouldn't he have done exactly what he was trained to do?

Again, I'm not trying to justify the shooting, just to shed some light on the other version of the incident

You and people like you disgust me.

Sigh...

this is gonna be just like the Travyon Martin threads with suburban white people wishing they could say more shit without behind banned, but settle for these devil's advocate scenarios.

I have nothing against anyone of any race, but I'm SO tired of people playing this fucking role on GAF

I'm out
I think GAF is way too harsh on people that don't advocate the prevailing liberal viewpoint on controversial social issues. To me, it really hinders interesting discussion in the OT section of the site...

Fair enough. Thanks for the level-headed response
