Yeah, I don't really get it, especially after Melee was the best selling game on the GC.
But I don't really get a lot of the decisions he made with Brawl.

The audience in general for the Wii was WAY larger than for the N64 and Gamecube. Brawl surpassed Melee's lifetime sales within the first year, and I'd bet most of those sales were from people with gaming experience closer to "Wii Sports and the occasional Mario title." So it makes sense to aim somewhat "lower" than before when so many Wii owners fit that mold.
Of course, it's entirely possible that a game more like Melee would have been equally popular, so it's tough to say if that was the right call.
Sadly. Ah well, I'll still find the new Smash fun I'm sure.

What worries me is that I can get behind Brawl on Wii being as accessible as possible because look at the people who had a Wii: "everyone" had a Wii.
But look at the people who have a Wii U. That wide Wii audience is gone, the people who have Wii Us are Nintendo's core fans who didn't need convincing to pick up the machine. If Sakurai is still playing to the Wii audience, that's not going to go over well a second time when there is such a small install base made up largely of only core fans.

I think what we should pull from Sakurai's statements is that while he isn't willing to concede the core of Smash's game design, he is willing to throw a bone to the hardcore audience occasionally as seen with "For Glory", multiple Final Destinations, and no tripping.

I chose Impa because she's also important to SS, but important to the franchise at large, and didn't include Krystal because I didn't want to give SF four reps. :V
Tropical Freeze is the perfect one actually. DKCR was lacking a couple things (Davis Wise for example) but it didn't need the Kremlings.
Still would like to K. Rool though, or ya'know, any DK character besides Diddy and Donkey Kong.

I don't know where to stand on the whole "should be closer to melee" or not debate. Then again, I'm not a competitive player in this area and I was fine with Brawl and Melee.
In the end, if Sakurai is fine with it and I get to play as Lucina, Palutena, and Rosalina and I can still enjoy it, I'll also be fine with whatever direction Sakurai takes.

Ultimately, I think that DK could sustain two newcomers - especially if the roster is as big as I made it there. Dixie could reasonably be a clone, and K. Rool could be a full newcomer.

I'd just be happy so long as Dixie would be there. She's earned it and I'm shocked so many people think she'd be just a Diddy Kong clone. I like K. Rool, but I'd be content if we even got Cranky or Funky.

Personally, I just want a Smash Bros game that has enough depth to keep me wanting to play better. Brawl was fun for a while, but with random ass tripping messing up movement of my character and Metaknight's overwhelming dominance in the competitive scheme of things really deterred me from playing it for competition and fun. I really stopped playing Brawl exclusively in 2012. Luckily, Project M got me back into it last year.
With tripping gone, some tweaking and reworking of characters thus far in the E3 demo and the slight speed bump overall promoting some more offensive play is really making me excited for this one. Also, the entire presentation of the game is so crisp and smooth that it is actually fun to watch, even if it's a defensive match (I know crazy huh? lol). I do hope they at least make the hitstun more consistent between characters and reduce some landing lag from aerial moves.
Still, I can't wait to play the 3DS version again this weekend. That announcement about the Nintendo Play Tour couldn't have come at a better time not too long before Japan release!

I don't believe that she is a Diddy clone, merely that she could be a Diddy clone. It certainly wouldn't be Ganondorf-bad.

Same here. I get that it's well intentioned; he just wants more people to have more fun. But it's always frustrating when the creator of the game points at you and says, "You, the things YOU enjoy are the things I want to avoid doing with my games in the future. Please keep buying them though!"
Yeah, I found that weird about his comments too. It's like he makes a point of the audience on the Wii as if he's going to contrast, then says that he still wants to focus on easing new players in. That kinda thing has kinda always been his schtick though, Miyamoto talks about it a lot too these days. From Sakurai's Kirby games, to Air Ride, to how much easier EVERY Smash is compared to something like Street Fighter or KoF. At the end of the day it isn't a terrible philosophy in general. Smash already found the perfect sweetspot though, and the games have intentionally moved away from it.

But Smash in itself is a "fighting" game for a wider audience. Its kind of what Nintendo does.

I agree to this! This game is going to be way more packed than Brawl, and that's an immediate win in my book.
