Probably because shit will go down if that happens.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't situation I think.

They are making a point to say fuck you to Governor Nixon etc for Pulling their bosses from their jobs. They claim the missing bosses will cause violence etc

Probably because active intervention will only make things worse. I think they think their presence will stop the looting from spreading. But if they go in with tear gas and rubber bullets, then it's violence all over again.

This is incredibly frustrating.

Watching this stream it really seems like the Ferguson community is divided against itself. You have people trying to stop the looting but it's just beyond their control. Sad that the protest turned into this tonight.

Hope. This and the picture of the group standing in front of the QuikTrip ready to fix it give me hope.

So let me get this straight: first the police came and THEN the looting started? These fuckers are laughing and having fun out there.

Protest was smaller until word came the police was threatening then crowd suddenly doubled and the trouble makers showed up.

The police came with riot gear shot smoke and flash bangs and then backed off. Later they were threatening the peaceful protest with arrests and other actions and the looting started several minutes later.

This is the first time I've seen something like this live. It is really quite fascinating and kind of frightening. I had read accounts of the Katrina aftermath, but never saw anything like this before.

I'll say it again. Looks like most of the people there have good intentions, nonviolent. Fuck those assholes who decide to ruin everything and loot and cause trouble.

I don't get it. The trouble makers showed up because they heard the police would be there? Shouldn't they be running away from the police or are they trying to take advantage of the police's conflict within itself?

I feel bad for that store owner, his shit got ramsacked.

If it's that older man that is just sad or any owner for that matter.

Always going to get those that get a thrill from pushing things as far as they can. Especially if they figure they can use the peaceful people as shields.

Oh how things change. Fell right into the police's plan. The world is watching. It started with the brutal work of the police, then transitioned to peace, and now the whole world is looking at these protestors as awful. What a damn shame. It isn't supposed to be like this.

I agree.

Let's resist the urge to flatten them into "protesters" or "looters." There's gotta be any assortment of motivations out there.

Also, again: there are folks who are protesting and folks who are looting and folks who are observing and folks who are trying to keep calm

Crowds are complicated. You can't really flatten them into one or two groups.

The live stream on reddit reported bottles being thrown at the police, then immediately followed it up with the police retreating by setting off smoke bombs.

Why can't you guys answer the question?

Store owner wasn't Black? Is that why he was assaulted?

Why ignore him?

He deserves the SAME amount of respect you're giving to the shitheat who robbed him

I hope at least a few news outlets emphasize the groups of people that are trying to keep the looters away.

It's true people have different agendas and motivations. But this reflects poorly on the community and really damages their image in the media. Peaceful protests are especially difficult to manage because they require solidarity. But all it takes are a few people who see things differently or a few people who want to start trouble.

Just when it looked like there was progress with this mess, and the issues in question in general, the whole thing falls apart and we take a step back. At least this guy knows that the arrival of the police is what provoked the crowd.

I feel for those that truly care, and for everyone that ends up getting hurt in the future because these protests were unable to fix the problem. I may be premature in saying these things, but it is hard t see the coming events as happening any other way.

I'm hope all these guys interviewing the protesters blocking the doors spread these videos and stuff so people can see tomorrow that not everyone is a rioter out there.
