On a side note, the right to peaceful gatherings and protest is protected? If so, how far does that protection go? For example, if a group of protesters (not these, but made up) are protesting a street keeping it closed for X-hours/days and affects the local businesses ability to conduct business does that infringe on some right?

Wait, let's be accurate. Tim said he lost his press pass. The officer ripped of the "PRESS" patch velcroed to the front of his vest. This patch was in no way official, identification, or credentials. It doesn't change the the officer was a dick, but let's be accurate here.
Not really. Don't forget that the Vice guys are very young looking and walking around with a phone and a broken camera. A printed out press sign means nothing, as the cop said. They don't look like regular CNN type medias.
Letting anyone walk around with a pseudo generic "PRESS" sign could lead to troublemakers using this to sneak in and start shit.

He was saying the blue sign he had on his vest wasn't official press credentials and that anyone could put a badge like that on them. Cop was being a dick, but just clarifying it wasn't said in a way meant to be "you journalists ain't shit to me."
