Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

You'll be fine using keyboard/mouse for trading btw, using it at the moment and I can dock pretty quickly now I've got the hang of it. No point dishing out a load of cash on a stick unless you plan on doing a lot of combat.

And knowing how to combat is crucial if you ought to survive any pirate encounters.

Seriously, you're best bet is getting even a simple Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Having the hat swtich + throttle nub will still do wonders compared to janky KB/M...even just in regular flight!

What are you using at home? Does the game have full pad support?
Saitek X52 Pro. The game has full pad support. But honestly, I recommend a HOTAS setup. The cheapest you can get is $30.

You pay 75 for the beta and there will be buy-able ships? Seems steep even if this looks more featured than Star Citizen. I don't like the piece meal approach so I'm going to pay 75 just for beta access then what are the perks?

This isn't a F2P game. It's a full retail release, and you have to earn your way to play the ships you see. And by earn, I mean the in-game currency, not real money.

How long will the beta run?

You can expect it right until around the end of next month. Then comes Gamma and the final Golden stage.

Though I wouldn't be surprised at a delay. They've done good work on pacing their development duties so far without compromising quality. Guess they at least earned the time to do extra polish work.

If it's still a month until it's over, I'll order the game+beta today, I am already amazed by those small VR space demo's for the Rift, can't wait how a real game is like.

I guess there's another Elite thread but 0 posts is kind of amazing.

You should really play this, GAF. The beta's impressive as hell. God, I love the sound design.

I should really play this, sure when it's finished and not $75 for a beta, I'm disgusted this thread starts with the insinuation that $75 is reasonable.

This game looks fun, but are people losing their minds, since when have paid betas been ok let alone reasonable for $75.

Star citizen (I know I know) has ships that cost hundreds of dollars. For this type of game 75 dollars for beta/gamma access and no need for purchasing ships with real money is more than reasonable. Full game will cost 50 if you don't want to pay for the beta.

^ What the?

If I don't think a beta is worth it for $75 using a game that sells unfinished DLC products for $150 as an example isn't going to convince me this a reasonable deal.

Welcome to Neogaf, one thread bitches about DLC, the next thread tells you $75 is a reasonable deal for an incomplete game, and then trys to tell you it's worth it because the final game will be cheaper.

$75 includes the cost of the full game on release, so basically your paying $25 for beta access.

Could we please not go back to discussing the price of the game again? It's been done way too often already.

If you aren't a fan of spacesims/don't have a Rift/want to get the best price simply don't buy the freaking beta which has a price matching a crowdfunding tier price/reward. It's that fucking simple.

Basically what Tfault said. Beta access is 25+cost of full game. Full game without access is 50. If you don't want to pay extra for the beta then you don't have to. To some it is worth it, to you it is obviously not. There's nothing wrong with viewing it either way.

Ok, I must admit it cost me more than the $25 for beta access.............. Spent another $150 odd for the X52 Pro :)

Really enjoying Elite in particular with using the X52. Makes flight control so much a smoother experience.

Struggling to earn loot at the moment though for my next upgrade!

Is this playable with a Logitech Freedom 2.4 Cordless Joystick? Because a X52 Pro looks sick :) and isn't cheap.
I'm still having my doubts to pay $75 for it.
Convince me into buying this because I loved Frontier: Elite 2 on the Amiga 500,
I liked the exploring part and the bounty hunting in it.

Hmmm, on the fence about getting an X52 Pro for this and Star Citizen. KB+M controls leave something to be desired though.

I just bought the X52. The Pro one here in Japan is about $200 which was too much for me, so I just went with the normal one.
It will arrive on Saturday (it's Thursday night now) so about a day and a half or so left. Can't wait to play this game with my first joystick in about... 20 years :/ (remember having one back when I was a kid playing Tie Fighter).

I will put my opinions for it here, from the point of view of a user that's been playing the game with a gamepad until now :P

Has there any word about progress transferring from Standard (current) Beta to release? I read somewhere that Premium Beta players would be compensated for in-game progress with currency once the full game is released, wondering if Standard Beta will be the same.

In no way do I expect character/ship progress to transfer, just hoping for currency incentive to keep playing.

Wow, i never realized Elite's ship sizes were this huge, i guess it'll be more apparent with the oculus rift's depth perception. But yeah, they're collosal.

I wonder though, the sidewinder is a 3 story high ship but it doesnt feel like it, when you pilot it it seems to be like a freaking Renault car, i wonder how Frontier can add a better sense of scale with these ships.

Had no idea that was the scale of the ships. I knew even the Sidewinder was huge since you can see trucks moving by inside stations but no one will really get it until atmospheric landings with structures.

Owning both this game and Star Citizen, right now I think this game is so many times better. The only thing I miss from Star Citizen is being able to walk around the ship.

If all the Elite ships are so big, it would be amazing if they let us walk around a bit while our ship is going somewhere. Did the devs ever say something related to this?

Edit: Never mind, found it. So that's a coming update, huh? Man, this game.... love it.

The future is very bright for Elite. I just hope they have enough funding to get there relatively quickly.

I kind of got the idea that even the Sidewinder was huge compared to what other Space Sims usually go for, which I thought was really cool.

Seeing this comparison makes me VERY eager to see what these ships look like in a hanger.

Thanks for the reply ^^

I might be investing but I'm still on the fence. A friend was prying me to get it and I haven't seen him online in like 3 days. I've been burnt several times from friends who tell me to buy something only to not see them online enough to warrant the money spent.

My advice: Wait till the next update or so. Game needs a bit more content and a more solid online experience.

Couple questions:

I'm just using the free Sidwinder and I've gotten maybe 25k creds or so trading commodities and doing good cargo runs on the bulletin board. Is it worth saving up for a Lakon Type 6 if I want to continue doing trading like this?

Will our progress/ships ever be wiped?

Once you got a few more credits, get a hauler. you can trade more with that and get the Lakon Type 6 faster.

And yes, everything you do in the beta is entirely meaningless. it will be wiped.

I'm both happy and sad that it will be wiped. It will be nice to have a fresh start.

Is there any way to make a second single-player campaign?

I want to show my friends this, but they most likely are going to crash my ship as they will have no idea how to play.

Not yet (multiple accounts), i wish for this feature too because i want to showcase it and let them fly but not if they waste 300 000+ $ lol.

Single player tutorial in the worst case, flying in the asteroids and dogfighting.

So I'm really looking forward to the open space exploration and trading in this (because fuck you, X: Rebirth), but how's the combat? Combat is hard to make "fun" in space-sims, so I'm pretty curious.

It doesn't look bad from videos but nobody seems to talk about it much.

I would equate it to something like Othello the game.. Easy to learn, difficult to master. Even in a default sidewinder you can do some serious damage if you know how to pilot well (popping assist off / hitting the afterburner, dogfighting while flying backwards, etc). There are also stealth mechanics.

I try my best to avoid combat, especially with the Hauler I just bought, but knowing how to defend yourself long enough to jump is important.

Anyhow, I'd say take the plunge! I just picked it up last weekend and have been playing it almost every night.

Cool! I like to hear about a little complexity in the combat along with more options (really like the free-flight aspect), but I'll have to wait as I've got other responsibilities. I figure I'll hold off until release.

I didnt dogfight much i beta 1 because trading is actually much more profitable right now (this will obviously change), but in premium beta i only did dogfights and to me its the best experience so far, good balance of info given to you and actually trying to find him (no GPS pointer), enough mechanics to turn the advantage to the skilled pilot like flight assist off, chaffs, silent mode, etc. The actual flight is very good in Elite i think, and flying with assist off is very hard to master but so satisfying, especially in asteroid fields. It might not be talked about that much anymore because the basics of the flight mechanics of Elite have been pretty much untouched since alpha.

What Frontier have to do now is to make these pvp encounters natural and strategic, its coming soon i guess since they mention a lot that PvP interdiction will require strategies from both the hunter and hunted. Items that will enhance scan/detection range, or lower your signature, will add a new layer to the stealth gameplay too.

That is the coolest shit. Awesome.

My x52 (not pro) arrived! God it feels sooooo good!!!

Anyway, I've been trying to set it up according to this image:

I got everything ready except for two key things. One, the "JOY 32" (the wheel behind the throttle) button is not reading as "Toggle head look" even if it's set up as that in the game, and instead deploys my hard points (or whatever other action it is that's doing that).

The other issue is the Pinkie Switch, it just won't go into UI focus mode. In fact, in the game it won't even register the switch even though the controller itself is working (when I press the pinkie switch my screen changes a bit and also on the settings of the joystick it also works).

Any idea if I have to do something special for these two buttons/switches to work?

Is there any way to change my name in game? I just show as Backer # 10302 or whatever

1. Login at: https://support.orerve.net/
2. Navigate to the ‘COMMANDER PROFILE’ tab
3. Enter your desired new commander name in the ‘Request a New Name’ field and press the ‘Request Name Change’ button.
4. If this is approved it will update the commander name at the top of the page.
5. If it is automatically denied a red message will appear above the field, stating the reason for the rejection.
6. If it is manually denied the player will receive an email telling them that their name has been rejected, once the batch update is complete.

After 24 hours with my x52, I can now understand why so many people would insist forever to grab a HOTAS right then and there. Seriously, if you are not sure, just BUY ONE.

Before grabbing mine, I was a bit worried about the space it would take up, and how much would it really improve the experience. Now, taking space is an issue for me right now because of the incredibly ghetto setup I got myself for now. I'm using an IKEA "poang" chair I have in front of my projector, and I put a small tiny table on the right to hold the joystick and a mouse, and got a small box on the left where the throttle is sitting. The distances are perfect, but it looks cheap as hell so I'm now seeing if any of my friends got a thing for DIY stuff.

However, when it comes to improving the experience... damn it does. And way better than I could have expected. It's not just having more buttons available (only thing I use my mouse for is the galaxy map), it's also how it feels like you are completely attached to your ship. It would be impossible for me to go back to controller or... ugh... KB/M.

I got the x52 and not the pro because here in Japan prices are way higher so the x52 is about the same price as the x52pro in the US. But for that price it's definitely worth it. My only gripe with the x52 is that the materials feel a bit cheap and the plastic seams don't look too pretty. But the rubber covers help hide the fact and they feel great.

So yeah, if you are still not sure, go grab a HOTAS. Then an Oculus RIft DK2 (I just ordered mine but it will take a while until it arrives) and don't leave home anymore :P

Man, some of the people in this game...

I was leaving Chango Dock on I Bootis on my way to Aulin, and first thing I notice... a massive silhouette covering the whole dock exit. It was my first time seeing a Lakon Type-9. It was quite something... but I also noticed it was moving funny. I starred to get close to the exit when the Type-9 pilot decided to spin his ship and move it towards the exit, with the longer side of the ship making a cross agains the exit. I don't know how the pilot managed to get his ship like that, but 3 seconds later the exit was a big white explosion, and right after that no more Type-9. So yeah, one guy destroyed his brand new ship just like that...

Other things I also noticed today is the amount of bad pilots! Some people stay on huge dock entrance for a while searching for their docking number, when they could just have a look at the target HUD. I think many people isn't even aware of that part of huge HUD anyway...
Also another thing that happened in I Bootis was this pilot on his Cobra placing himself right in front of me right when I was about to enter the docks, making me almost crash with him...

Oh and the last one, it just happened about 20 mins ago... this sidewinder was right in the middle of the exit spinning a lot. I wanted to leave and the guy wouldn't move for like a minute, so I rammed him with my hauler and he reacted moving back, crashing on some wall and exploding. My hull was at 99% so no big deal :D

And even with all of this (or perhaps because of all of this?) I love this game, even when I'm just hauling stuff from one planet to another.

Finally, another PC Gamer sees the light.

(Now port us Steel Batallion to Steam Form Software!)
