Ferguson: Police Officer Kills 18yo Michael Brown; Protests/Riots Continue

From the latest article on The Nation:

"But for me, the detail that sticks is that Brown’s body was left in the street for at least four hours. Not only did people in the community witness the shooting, they were forced to look at the aftermath. For hours, they had to see Michael Brown’s bullet-ridden, bloody body lie rotting in the street."

I wasn't aware of that before, his body being left like that for so long. There's so much wrong with this incident.

I think that's what prompted the protests. Police shoot people a lot, but that drew a lot of attention to it.

Just something that's been bugging me...

Assuming the officer that shot Michael Brown really was hit in the face by Brown, it more than likely happened while he was in the car, right? Then Brown walked away. At that point, why did he leave vehicle? He was angry and wanted to deal with Brown himself? No matter what happened next, whether Brown charged back at him or not, shouldn't he have called for backup and kept his distance? I doubt Brown was a threat to much anyone else but other police officers at that point.

Or I'm looking at this the wrong way possibly?

Edit: This post is pretty much how I see the events:
I'm going to guess it was probably just one or two punches. But Brown is a big guy, so one or two punches to the face is probably enough to leave a significant mark.

Brown's friend says Wilson pulled Brown into the police car, right? Brown could have resisted that and punched Wilson to get him to let go.

Wilson goes for his gun, but fumbles and the gun goes off. It doesn't sound like that shot hit anyone, but it was probably enough to panic Brown into running.

That's when Wilson hops out of the car and uses entirely too much force.

I'm just thinking that Wilson getting out of the car like that was the wrong thing to do.

Police aren't trained to shoot people in the limbs, that stuff only works in the movies. Officers shoot to kill when neutralizing a threat and there's no limit on how many bullets they can fire, that is up to their discretion. Honestly, if somebody is coming at me with a knife and I'm an officer, I'm not risking collateral damage by aiming for a limb or shooting to wound. Heck, even a taser is dangerous because if you fuck up and miss, you're dead. I think the use of deadly force in the situation with an unpredictable knife wielder is warranted.

in holland police officers are trained to shoot criminals in the leg. And it works

I'd love to expose these keyboard warrior racists as the scum they really are. You know they'd never spout this bullshit in public because it's a backwards way of thinking. Makes me sick.

In America we don't train our officers to risk collateral damage going for trick shots. If there is a threat and the officer deems lethal force to be necessary, they shoot to kill.

Seriously what the fuck. I have been following this since the outset and some of these things.... I just don't know what to think anymore (well I do, but I can't quite put it into word form).

With every passing day I feel more and more like I went to sleep and woke up in the 1800s.

Is this printed in an actual newspaper? It looks like something you'd see in a Klan recruiting pamphlet.

Yep. It was printed in the Columbia Daily Tribune yesterday.

That's Glenn McCoy, who used to get published in a lot of papers. I haven't seen too much of him since his since his Sandra Fluke cartoons a few years ago -- they were hideous too. This one was printed in the Columbia Daily Tribune.

He's a total racist. This was his take on the Trayvon Martin ordeal.

Dorian said that that Mike Brown was shot while he was wrestling with Johnson and even said he was bleeding from that first shot in the car. Also according to Dorian's story, Brown was being choked by the officer through the car window -- so it would not surprise me if Brown did throw a few punches. But the extent of his injuries have gone from: "OMG fractured eyeball" to "a bit of swelling on the one side of his face". And the fact that they're taking this long to show any proof and have resorted to "leaking" their side of the story, makes me not believe a word they're saying.

But didn't the autopsy(ies) say all the shots were from a distance? And wouldn't they also have seen some sort of neck injury from being choked through the window?

Dorian's story is going to be torn apart if the injuries do not match up.

And if Brown was bleeding when he left the car, wouldn't there be blood on the pavement? I have not heard/seen anything about that.

If the shot in the car didn't hit anyone, there'd be a bullet in the car somewhere. I don't think we've seen/heard anything about that.

But yes, the length of time to disclose the nature of Wilson's injuries does make a person suspicious.

I haven't seen a single picture with evidence markers, so I doubt they took the time to investigate the scene. Especially when they couldn't be bother to write a report, let alone cover the dead body in the middle of the street.

I should correct myself in that Dorian said Wilson was trying to choke Brown and had his hands around his neck -- not that he was in the act of choking him. But either way, there was no sign of a struggle and we know from 6 (or 7?) witnesses that indeed there was a struggle in the car. Even Wilson's side of the story claims Brown was reaching for his gun through the car window.

I'm motioning that Missouri be renamed to New Florida. Christ.

I'm in my cube at work and I overhear two of the managers here talk about the issue. The guy starts off by saying that the entire event was justified and that it would be wrong for him to face charges. The other guy responds that they are out for revenge and that it's the same race-baiters that show up to every one of these things. Finally, the 1st guy responds saying that THEY are going to use the knife incident to tear down another city and that if you're acting like a thug in front of an officer you should expect to get shot.

GAF, I am black and sitting probably 5 feet away from the office where this took place. They didn't even bother to close the freaking door. Pray for my patience, as I really just feel like turning up and losing it right now.

You don't want to be known as the "angry black guy" around the office.

I don't know how people could just sit there and take that. I guess its easy for me so say I could call that shit out when I'm not in that situation.

Ha, if you want bad, check this forum out; it gathers some very interesting posters from the (very right) side. No idea why since the site at its core is just an informational site. Read through their Ferguson thread at stickied at the top.

This happened in Missouri only two years ago. The two people you see there besides Rush Limbaugh are the Lt. Governor and the Speaker of the House.

Yeah, the state's got a few problems right now.

For you black US gaffers how much has this event affected you in terms of where you thought race relations where in the US? VS where an event like this has really shown a lot of people's weird thought processes on race.

I'm shocked at the outpouring of some very, very dodgy stuff. I thought Obamas reelection got some people's backs up and they went to town woth the racist comments, but this event has seen the hatred ratcheted up past that.

Fucking christ, man. This is exactly what happens with any large protest in America. Obviously there are going to be shithead opportunists in large protests especially ones where people are emotionally charged. It happened in Occupy Wallstreet too (dont mean to compare the two movements except that they're large scale protests). And all the detractors do is focus on the shitheads as if they're the whole face of the protest (really it could be a single person doing something bad and they'd magically become the face of a whole movement) and it allows those on the other side to completely ignore the message and the point of the protest. They stick their fingers in their ears and go 'LA LA LA NOT LISTENING!!!!'.

If there are people angry in the streets wtf is the point of not trying to address the issue? We should be a fucking community and try to make this world a better place for all of us, so why focus on those dumbasses and ignore the legitimate grievances. They come off like children who refuse to eat their food. These conversations need to be had and they are GOING to be had and they're just making it harder for it to happen and I don't know why... I mean I guess I do... it would upset the status quo which benefits them.

Re: the autopsy and sign of struggle.

I think it is important to keep in mind that this was a private autopsy at the behest of the family and is not the St. Louis me nor the doj autopsy and there may be differences in the findings particularly since the me performed the first autopsy and you can't perform a non invasive autopsy. I'm not saying its untrustworthy, only it should be viewed as limited while we wait for the me's autopsy to be released.

I'm trying to have conversations with peers on this whole thing, but everyone is intentionally so very tight lipped about it.That alone is negatively affecting me.
