You seem to misunderstand both who came up with Doctor Hooves (it was the fans) and how much in the foreground the references in MLP are (they're way in the background). Arguments against references as replacements for cleverness don't really apply here.

Oh I know how much in the background it is in the actual show (I've seen a hefty chunk of it) its just that the references are what I see bandied around as "why its cool for adults too"

Back on topic Inside the Dalek is the other one that leaked right? Any general, spoiler-free "its good" "its shit" impressions?

Moffat on River Song returning. Not sure where this is from but I saw it on tumblr:

I'm glad if he's not lying.

Oh thank god. Honestly done right we should have still been smack dab in the middle of Rivers story, but they went and blew it early and now I'm just glad they're seemingly done with her

But seriously, fuck the S7 finale for how it used her as a cop-out

I'm undecided on episode 2. I love the idea of it but the premise is goofy. Like magic school bus goofy.
I enjoyed it but I'll need to see the complete version.

Time Heist is really very good.

I have a theory about something major that may or may not happen. I won't bring it up here (because spoilers) but it is beginning to make a lot of sense.

Involves Danny.

Wait, just how much has leaked? I'm possibly most hyped for Time Heist, so if you actually know that its very good then hype has just increased

May be LTTP on this but Jenna took BuzzFeed's "Which Companion Are You?" quiz. Pretty funny.

Also, swoon:

Woah, love her even more now!

Somehow he managed to take one of my favourite characters from legend and turn him into an unbearable arse.

Worst casting for everyone. Every character is either too comic or just untintentionally unbearable.

I feel like the historical figures - at least the majorly featured ones - are always hit and miss in the show. Almost a 50/50 rate. Dickens, Christie & Van Gogh were done 'right' in my eyes, but Victoria, Shakespeare, Churchill and now Robin Hood (while not 'historical' in the strictest sense) have all been a bit rubbish.

I'll gladly add Christie to the rubbish-list. But you're right about the rest. I haven't seen the Robin Hood episode, but hearing that he falls into that same trap a lot of other historical figures on Who fall into, and knowing that Gatiss wrote that episode, I think I know exactly what to expect. A bit of a shame. I guess they can't all be winners. Although, going from some of the reactions here, most of the leaked episodes aren't that good?

I'm happy that I'm waiting on the finished products rather than those leaked workprints (or the scripts). Post-production won't make a bad episode good, but it can make a huge difference. I want my first impression to be as good as possible.

I still really love The Unicorn and the Wasp for the camp fest it is and will gleefully lavish pain on those who feel otherwise, of which I know many of you are.

Even so, not really talking about the episode, but the character. I think The Shakespeare Code is a pretty good episode of Doctor Who (I really like the 'Witches as Aliens' and 'Words as Science' ideas in concept here), but Shakespeare is just written like a twat. Conversely, I actually think The Unquiet Dead is pretty crap and one of the weaker links in Series 1, but Dickens is written & played brilliantly. Regardless of what people think of unicorn's slapstick, faux-comedy sort of style, I just think Fenella Woolgar is just magnificent as Christie and really does a good job of capturing the essence of who that woman was in 45 minutes.

There are a pair of Peter Davison- hosted docos floating about called The Ultimate Companion and The Ultimate Timelord. They both have a cheesy premise of Davison interviewing people to work out what makes the ultimate companion or doctor.

The companion one is pretty naff but the Doctor one is pretty good. The best thing about both is Peter Davison insisting on pronouncing Capaldi to rhyme with appalling rather than say it like everyone else he's talking to, including Capaldi.

FYI there's yet another documentary on BBCA tomorrow at 9pm EST - It's "Doctor Who: Earth Conquest", and I think it's a 1 hour wrap of the world tour.

Thanks, watching them now. I'm not one to ask for more multi-doctor stories in the near future (they're better when they're saved for special occasions), but Peter Davison really deserves to put that costume on in a fully fledged modern adventure again. He's still got that enthusiasm, and he's still a great actor (better than he was back then, actually). I know that he did the short Comic Relief sketch with Tennant, but I'd love to see more of him. He's gotten older, but unlike the Bakers he still looks enough like his younger self that I think the audience would forgive the age difference. He's certainly been happy to promote the show in recent years - heading the five-ish doctor reboot, presenting the Doctor Who concert, doing these documentaries, giving his daughter to a newer Doctor...

I also got goosebumps seeing Capaldi and Davison together, with them calling each other 'Doctor'. Then again, I'm a massive geek.

Edit: Crazy conspiracy time: Nick Briggs is in the Ultime Timelord doc, and he's sporting a very Master-like goatee...

The publicity for this series has officially gone mad.

That's so cool. I don't know why but it makes me want a flash mob-esque live episode of Who where Capaldi just one day walks out of the TARDIS and starts warning people about some alien invasion.

Also for UK folks Jenna's on This Morning sometime after 12. Just in case Capaldi on The One Show yesterday wasn't enough bland magazine show awkwardness for you.

Unicorn and the Wasp is a good episode. I may have chatted some shit about it in one of these threads, so I'd like to redact that opinion.

Just got my ticket to the theater here to see the episode. The seats are a little bit crap (we were too late) but the 50th experience was great at the same cinema so Im sure we are going to have fun.

The music is the one great unknown with the leaks and all. I'd rather Murry Gold had moved on, really (10 years is a long time), but I'm still very excited to hear what he comes up with as he is very good indeed.

Has anyone who has seen the finished version of "Deep Breath" mentioned the Doctor's theme?

None that I've heard, but they have mentioned how surprisingly atmospheric and low-key the soundtrack can get now.

I hope they leave the "I am the doctor" theme in Matt Smith's era. Each Doctor needs his own style, and music plays a huge part in that. Plus, really, Matt Smith's theme seemed to be lazily inserted into scenes instead of composing an entirely nw piece of music (which I'd much prefer).

On the one hand, I'd kinda like to see some new blood take the reins as the show's composer. But on the other hand, Gold can still really knock me over with new tracks like Trenzalore.

That's good to hear. That kind of music plays better to Gold's strengths than the wacky hijnks, running-around, adventure themes do.

Murray Gold talks about his approach to the new music in the Peter Davison 'Ultimate Time Lord'-doc', if you're interested. The two doc's are actually pretty fun, even though the premise is the usual BBC America nonsense. It's an excuse to put Davison in front of a lot of Who-actors and just talk about the show, which is always fun. His segment with Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann is pretty fun, and like I said earlier, seeing the mutual respect between him and Capaldi is pretty great. First time we've seen Capaldi with an older Doctor in the same room.

They should save I am the Doctor for Matt's epic appearance in some future inevitable cross-Doctor episode :p

Did they do this much pre-launch promotion when Matt Smith came on board? My terrible memory suggests that they didn't. I can only guess this is a consequence of Matt's success and further the phenomenon that the 50th was.

There was more promotion for Smith than there was with Tennant I believe, but not even close to what they're doing now. The live-show, the media-hype, the world tour, the cinema showings - that's all new. It feels very weird, but a lot of that has to do with the growing American audience and the media attention surrounding the 50th, like you said.

Everything I have seen of Peter Capaldi talking about the series has me more pumped for a new Doctor than ever before. The man is all class. We will shortly forget about him just doing Malcolm Tucker in a TARDIS.

Quick question. I have never seen Doctor Who. Is it a good time to jump in with a new Doctor or am I gonna be lost because I missed all the other seasons?

What you'll be missing out on is an awesome show you should absolutely check out.

Actual answer: I'd hate to say anything to convince you you shouldn't watch what came before, because you absolutely should, but this is a decent starting point; you definitely won't be lost at all except for probably a couple of references here and there. DW episodes are surprisingly self contained for the most part.

Yes and Yes. Don't Blink, Just watch the new show, you can always go back and discover earlier episodes if it appeals to you.

How many seasons will I have to go check out to fully appreciate this show?
