Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Nintendo learned nothing from the wii and wiiu debacle.

This is just going to add to brand confusion.

People won't understand this is a new console and it will cannibalize sales.

It's not a new console. That's the point. It's a DS-I a stop gap basically.

Ok, sorry... I shouldn't have started a new thread but it didn't seem people fully realized what just happened.

- it has new controls
- it is more powerful to the point that it will play more powerful games, which cannot be played on the predecessor hardware

Those are the very definitions of a new platform.

So I guess I didn't fully realize that it isn't simply called "3DS" it is actually called "New 3DS", like how there was a "DS" and "DSi" which was also a NEW platform, btw folks, because it had its own games that were not playable on original DS.

Yes, this is a new platform. Plain and simple.

If you folks feel that customers can handle "New 3DS" and understand what that means, and they will understand the packaging on games and know the difference between "3DS" and "New 3DS"... ok then. lol

If a new 3DS model came out that was simply a different form factor but had the same controls and power, you know how I would refer to it? "A new 3DS".

They should have called this thing 3DSi perhaps... or something completely new. 3DS-2 perhaps?

There was customer confusion with "3DS"... and even more with "WiiU"... and now people don't think there will be massive confusion with "New 3DS"??

Coming out on October 11 in Japan, 2015 in Europe (and probably NA).

Press release only detailed up to and including holiday 2014 plans.

So yeah, it's absence from that is a clear indicator. Maybe not till April depending on the FY situation.

I'll definitely be picking one of these up, but the fact that the face plates are seemingly only for the smaller version is a real downer.

I would totally opt for the XL otherwise, but the plates are so tempting. D:

Either Gamestop has some VERY trusting policies, or the person that authorised that should have been fired on the spot. Why on earth would any store let you walk out with two systems on the promise that you'll return one of them? It's practically inviting theft.

I did the something similar at GAME here in the UK, with the Nintendo trade in offer they had going.

Paid full price for the XL, he marked the receipt, took them both home and transfered, then went back with the receipt and continued with the offer. The difference refunded to my card.

I want the XL, but in White (with SNES buttons) and faceplates. =/

This has got me wondering if my 3DS will play half of the games that come out now. I'll probably try to sell mine before the general public catches hold of this news.

I'm not sure I would actually prefer the nub to just purchasing a circle pad pro. It seems incredibly uncomfortable like the legacy laptop pointing stick. I want to see a breakdown to see what prevented them from shifting the internals and externals to place in a slightly bigger or normal sized circle pad. And I'd like to see CPU specs and benchmarks.

Does it still take the old memory cards, or would I need to update my 32mb card to a micro sd one and transfer all content via PC?

Is not. DSi was still a DS at a retail level (in 99% of games), this new portable is not.

Is like saying the 32X was a revision. Whatever the small library it had, it wasn't.

How do you know the New 3DS won't share 99% the games? Just because they said Xenoblade port is an exclusive to entice people to buy the system?

Fuck. I wonder if the New 3DS will get SNES/ GBA VC?

That's actually a good point since the problem with getting those to work was horsepower.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if they hold off on this till the new Game Boy/DS is released in 2 years or so.

I was planning on grabbing an XL + giant frankenstick in time for MH4U so this could end up being quite convenient if it comes out in time (bundle would be great).

I was kinda looking forward to using this monstrosity though.

It's not a new console. That's the point.

But it has the ability to play some games that the previous generation of the same line can't?

I can see this being a bit of a mine field.

Kid - Mum, can you get me Xenoblade for 3DS for my birthday?
Mum - sure
...
Kid - Mum it doesn't work on my 3DS.

I'd say all of this forum are exempt from that example, but I'll go out and say most Nintendo customer's are not. Wii & Wii U shows that. I was in a GAME shop the other day just browsing and I listened to a guy sell a Wii U to a couple looking for a family console and he had to say around 4 times that this is a brand new machine, not an attachment.

Only stupid people will be confused. And it is not a new platform. The new 3DS is to the 3DS as the DSi was to the DS or the GBC was to the Gameboy.

Great news.

I've been planning to get a 3DS for a while now but have been waiting for the fall announcements.

Shame it won't hit Europe until next year, but I'm not in a rush... I've got plenty other games to play in the meantime.

Um, what dafuq are you smoking? While it may not be quite as convenient as a proper cloud based system, the 3DS's system transfer system is near flawless for what it is.

That's the thing, I don't have anything to play on my 3DS for the next few months, so ideally I'd sell my 3DS XL and buy the revision whenever it comes to the West.

Except I can't do that because then I'll lose the bunch of downloaded games I have AND I won't be able to tie my New 3DS to the same NNID I use on my Wii U.

At least I learned my lesson and I refuse to buy any downloadable Wii U games until they fix their retarded account system.

So how likely do people think that the inevitable Majora's Mask remake will be a New 3DS exclusive (or at least have New 3DS-enhanced features)?

I hope it isn't region locked... but my 1 week old mint LL kind of hopes it is...

This is the freaking DSi all over again. 3DS for announced days after I bought mine.

Again did you refer to the DSi as a new console. I'm guessing you didn't as that certainly was an exceedingly rare sentiment.

Like the DSi. Would you call that a new console? It's a revision.

Yes? Why should I not?

If a friend who was not well-informed wanted to play this new Xenoblade and I told him to go to the store and buy "a 3ds" that wouldn't cut it.

"Go to the store and buy a NEW 3DS, make sure it's called the "NEW 3DS". I'm not talking about the difference between new and used, I'm saying there are two different systems called the "3DS" and the "NEW 3DS" and you need to make sure you get the "NEW 3DS"."

I mean maybe we're getting in to a semantic argument, but nobody ever refers to the DS and the DSi as the same thing when it comes to practicality.

Only stupid people will be confused. And it is not a new platform. The new 3DS is to the 3DS as the DSi was to the DS or the GBC was to the Gameboy.

OMG... Game Boy Color was a new platform too! Could you play Game Boy Color games on an original Game Boy?

wtf people...

Not that my opinion matters to the industry, but new Nintendo plataform, never again. So soon and my 3ds is useless now.

How do you know the New 3DS won't share 99% the games? Just because they said Xenoblade port is an exclusive to entice people to buy the system?

Why would they release only one new game that wasn't even that popular in the first place to entice people buy a new hardware?

If you want to atract people with software you don't stop on just one game.
