Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Seems like it.

The letters are colored on the XL though in the image you posted.

Yeah but that's a fairly big difference if we're to take it as a statement of intent, vs DSi software.

Also, I see mentions of PSPGo, but IIRC, the game runtime environment was static. Hardware improvements were for OS use only.

I think that was just a case of being too focused on mainstream though. They did this with gb/gbc as well and that got warioland 3, zelda oracles & pokemon crystal.

GBA gen is the only time they didn't have a powered up model.

Four thoughts -

1 - The second C-stick looks like it's similar to a laptop 'eraser mouse'
2 - How did they fix the 3D viewing angle? Is this a completely new kind of screen? Everything I read about the 3D on the original unit made it sound like the bad viewing angles were intrinsic to the technology they used.
3 - Metallic blue looks super-nice
4 - Do you think they finally fixed the screen-scratching this time?

I'm not gonna lose too much sleep over it. I never played Xenoblade and if I want to, I can get it on the Wii. I won't really be upset until there's a game I can't play, and then I'll have to scrape some money together.

To stop everyone asking - it's only MicroSD. The Japanese website doesn't seem to list SD.

I've got a 32gb microSD in an SD adapter at the moment so I'm safe thankfully. Decent sized MicroSD's are so cheap these days though.

More I think about it, the more it smells of desperation.

Nintendo needs new things to buoy sales, but is stuck mid-gen.

So put out a revision. Cool!

But: their circumstances demand something more than a small revision might provide. The new model needs some extra pull over and above cosmetic or new color tweaks. So make one cheap and modest change to the game runtime (CPU), and dangle the fear of software lockout over your existing audience to push more sales. Lead the charge with a first party game.

'Cynical Nintendo' at its best, but these are probably desperate times for Nintendo. I doubt the CPU improvement is anything that couldn't have been put in the original model.

You've described their typical mid-generation approach to portable hardware, but attached the word "desperation" to it. You do understand the bias in your statements, correct?

Lol at all the buyers that waited for years for the absolute best deal and now there is this. Thats what happens in electronics. Deal with it.

"Shopkeeper, I'd like to trade three DS games towards a new 3DS."
"How many 3DS games will you trade, sir? Would you like a used New 3DS?"

Looked like head tracking via the cameras.

But it couldn't play physical games bought from stores so yeah, it's a new platform even if the improvements where for the OS

So it's basically a whole new machine. Its features either go mostly unused, or render the old 3DS (and 2DS) obsolete.

Not sure if I should feel happy for this news, or sad for my old portable (which I bought last year, and I'd need to replace it if the latter scenario happens.)

Wrong. Its like an old 3ds with new features. The faster cpu will be used for faster web browsing, miiverse, e-shop and some games. The improved 3d viewing angle will be used for all games. The c stick will be used for games that support the circle pad pro. The better screen will be used for all games. Some exclusive software thats it, all the other features can be used for all games.

I think the tech necessitates that there will always be "sweet spots" but you can make the screen have more and more of them, huddled closer together.

I (accidentally) just posted this in the xenoblade thread, but what do you all think about the new processor being used for virtual console? Will SNES and GBA games finally come out? Will they be cross platform woth the Wii U?

(Edit) Anyone know if this upgraded CPU will in any way effect non-enhanced games? I'm thinking not... but not having slowdown in games like Fire Emblem when you have 3D turned on would be nice.
Actually I expect it will. Unless it only has to do with the graphics card.

Poor Nintendo of Europe. How the fuck are they supposed to sell the old model DS's this holiday when there's new models around the corner in early 2015? Why not release these for Christmas? I was sure that was the whole point.

Madness, just madness.

There were similar waits for the DS Lite and DSi, and at the time I was at university and doing the retail grind in a game store here in the UK, and I'll tell you: parents don't bloody care. We would try to get people to wait for the DS Lite or DSi, and in the case of the latter, all the official Nintendo hype/messaging was that it'd have exclusive games and all that - parents just didn't give a shit for the most part. The question was always just "does the old one play Brain Training/New Mario/Animal Crossing/Pokemon? OK. Good. We'll take that then."

While they weren't over the Christmas period, the story will be the same. Like, the year the Lite and i launched, we inevitably sold out of those, the newer model, at Christmas, and people were then happily buying the older ones we had left over rather than waiting for new stock. People are nutters, especially parents at Christmas time.

Combine that with the fact this announcement hasn't been made for Europe/NA formally and a lot of people probably just won't know outside the internet video game fan bubble. Those that do will be aware this will probably be a touch more expensive, which is also a factor. It's not like when MS announced the Xbox One without Kinect for all markets a month in advance, essentially announcing a big price cut, thus killing sales.

From the moment it has a retail exclusive game (and probably more) in the way, stops being similar to a DSi and becomes similar to a GBC and other new hardware (you know that getting a PS2 you had access to a vast array of PS1 games?)

What if they wall off the exclusive software by making them available only as digital downloads through the system itself? Then you won't have anyone trying to play New 3DS games on a regular 3DS.

Why couldn't these A-holes announce at E3 this year? I waited specifically for E3 to make sure no new hardware was announced before buying my 3DS XL. Now we get market segregation with it as well. In a year, we won't have anything but shovelware coming out for the regular 3DS/2DS systems.

I did the something similar at GAME here in the UK, with the Nintendo trade in offer they had going.

Paid full price for the XL, he marked the receipt, took them both home and transfered, then went back with the receipt and continued with the offer. The difference refunded to my card.
That shouldn't have been permitted at all, if the transaction had flagged at head office it'd be immediate grounds for an investigation.

Just had a thought, wonder if this "improved 3d" is new IP that doesn't infringe with whatever patent nintendo are currently fighting in the courts about?

Im lost.

So whats the story here, given it has a second thumbstick (of sorts) and extra shoulder buttons, are we going to see games that ONLY work on the new 3DSLL? Will some games not work or just not run as well if they utilise the systems slight performance bump?

Seems an unnecessary segregation.

I dont really understand who this system is marketed for or why system developers would target this using the extra buttons etc rather than just target the much larger 3DS install base.

Why even do a small update like this instead of a new system entirely?

I can't believe they did this. The second stick should have been there from the start and we now already have a high profile game coming only to this new system.

Fuck off Nintendo.

DS revisions were never this substantial as to make the system entirely different and have a control scheme only it has.

Very unhappy.

I just read that Xenoblade is new 3DS only.

Now I'm kinda disappointed. I wish it had been rebranded as a totally new system. This seems like a waste. I probably wouldn't mind so much if it just had a decent name and looked different enough to tell apart from the regular 3DS. At a glance it looks like a basic revision. Seems like a half hearted attempt at a successor, more along the lines of the gradual updates we see in mobile devices or PCs.

There will be games that only the new 3DS & new 3DS XL can run. There already is one. The Xenoblade port.

Well, I finally feel vindicated in not buying an XL at least. I'll probably pick one of these up when they have the first big sale in the US, or a refurb or something. Still pissed that I lost my copy of Kid Icarus Uprising before I had a chance to even play it, so maybe I'll look for a copy of that on the cheap and play it with the Nintendo Nipple on this revision.

This, very much this.

Is there any information about if (and to what extent) they improved the screen? (For 2D content I mean)

The New 3DS screens at 1.2x the size of the regular 3DS screens. LL/XL sizes remain the same. I don't think there's any actual screen quality improvement, but the 3DS effect now uses the user-facing camera and the gyroscope to detect what angle the player is facing to adjust the 3D effect for a much wider viewing angle. There is also some energy saving auto-brightness feature for the screens.

The only thing I want better in my 3ds is the camera :( would love more megapixels...

This looks sweet though. Announce for na and I'll triple dip.

You can buy and play Xenoblade on a Wii or Wii U today. You don't own either? What is wrong with you!
Furthermore you can buy the joystick add-on for your 3DS to play any games that make use of the new nub, it is the same exact functionality.
