Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

A Very Important Question has just come to mind:

Will this be able to run Unity?

If so, that's a *huge* deal from a dev perspective.

Alright, I'm ready to buy one once it release basically just because of the coloured buttons. But, the real question is, is the region lock still in place?

I hold my DS with my left pinky supporting the system along the bottom edge. I hope that card slot in that exact spot isn't a problem. I'd hate to pop out my cart mid-game.

Goddamit, they've shifted the charging contacts to the middle, so the existing 3DS XL/LL dock won't work!

Although with the extra shoulder buttons, I guess that can't be helped... Still, hopefully they'll bundle a dock with the console, like the did with the original 3DS (and Wii U).

So now we have 3ds, 3dsxl, 2ds, new 3ds and new 3dsxl.

I don't think the comparisons to the ds/Dsi are the same thing

Im lost.

So whats the story here, given it has a second thumbstick (of sorts) and extra shoulder buttons, are we going to see games that ONLY work on the new 3DSLL? Will some games not work or just not run as well if they utilise the systems slight performance bump?

Seems an unnecessary segregation.

I dont really understand who this system is marketed for or why system developers would target this using the extra buttons etc rather than just target the much larger 3DS install base.

Why even do a small update like this instead of a new system entirely?

This is getting ridiculous there is like 5 3ds model now ?

And the new 3DS will be more powerful so some games wont be playable on old model I guess ?

Girlfriend just asked why I said I was having so much fun this morning waiting on my plane. I texted her the following - when you type it all out, it is a bit crazy. But, eh, I'll buy one! ;p

":-) This is thrilling to me. The uproar on the message boards is perfect airport terminal entertainment.

Thing is, people already confuse the shit out of nintendo' hardware. Ignoring the WiiU catastrophe, the 3ds is a successor to the immensely popular DS. It plays DS games, but DS doesn't play 3DS games. People don't know this, cause the DS, DS lite, DSi, and DS XL all played all games. So people thought 3ds was just a new DS. But, whatever, it's different.

But then Nintendo releases a 3ds xl. Bigger. Okay.

But then a 2ds. It plays 3ds games. But only in 2d. There are no "2ds" games.

***

So what does Nintendo do?

They release this: "the new 3ds"

It has better specs, better screen, better battery life, better 3d, and more buttons. But it is NOT a new platform. It's not new hardware. It's not the "next DS system" like a PS4 is to a PS3.

But it does play some games, exclusive to it.

What a cluster."

I don't think the comparisons to the ds/Dsi are the same thing

I think that's more a case of nintendo not having the resources to pump out games at that point in time though

I'm expecting a gb/gbc style shift if the Japanese sales are good.

Guess we find out early how firm the handheld marker is for a newcomer in the face of mobile

Probably we are talking about just a faster ARM11 CPU, for compatibility reasons, so I guess the answer is NOPE.

Are the a9/a15's not backwards comaptiable?

I'd be very surprised if they removed it, although given the way things tend to work out, Japan's the region that's least interested in such a thing, so while they're presenting it as a Japanese product, I doubt that's something that'd be on their radar.

Maybe we'll get clarification when we get more explicit European and US detailing. I'm still not expecting it to be, though.

If they were going to cannibalize their own user base anyway, they should have just made something that is actually an upgrade. Maybe purchases that are tied to an account for starters.

DAY FUCKING ONE!

  • 2DS (only runs certain games)
  • 3DS (only runs certain games)
  • 3DS XL (only runs certain games)
  • New 3DS
  • New 3DS XL

Let's see parents figure that one out! -_-

For someone who never fully invested in the original 3DS

This is fantastic news and pretty much locks me into for Monster Hunter Bliss

I mean the Analog nub isn't ideal but Ill take it over buying a CPP

Wait, so, I'm confused.

It's a "New 3DS" that effectively serves its moniker by putting in new buttons and what is essentially a second stick.

But the games coming out for it are going to still be playable on the old 3DS, no? With that said, I want it, but not enough to actually buy one. Unless there are 3DS games coming out that will effectively require this, with the estimates that some of GAF have been throwing out about when the 3DS would get retired, it seems a little late in the game for something of this nature to arrive.

You guys wanna see Mario Sinshine and Twilight Princess on 3DS? Well guess what!

I want to see the hardware first etc., my white XL is quite nice but I wouldn't mind upgrading yet another time.

If this is anything like the DSi situation, I doubt many developers will have the balls to release N3DS only titles and pass up on the install base of OG through 2DS.

Once again, I'm crossing my fingers that they get rid of that shitty region lock because face plates and an ugly version of Xenoblade alone won't make me buy this.

Nintendo dropping the bombs today. We saw that the handheld covers can be swapped a la GBA Micro faceplates, but is that only for the New 3DS or is it for the New 3DS XL as well?

Looking at the Direct, it seems that the replaceable covers are only for the New 3DS while the New 3DS XL will keep getting the special edition versions such as the Smash 3DS and Monster Hunter 4 3DS.

That naming system. However it looks amazing, I love the design changes and the second analog stick is a nice addition. Perhaps it's not a full blown new portable because they're working on that unified console/handheld as their next big release ;)

That doesn't look as nice. :/

Damn, I never knew I'd seriously consider opting for the smaller version just for some retro buttons and face plates, but it's happening.

I think it's because of the console color. Colord buttons look nice in white but maybe no so much in dark blue. Anyway we still don't know what variations will come over here.

Got a (og) 3ds since launch and to be honest i'm pretty happy with a new model announcement, especially since the west is getting mh4 and i was pretty iffi about getting it since i don't enjoy the 3ds slide pad expansion.

Now i'm hoping for a nice new 3ds ll & mh4 bundle for a decent price.

No, there are New 3DS exclusives. The Xenoblade port they announced will be New 3DS exclusive.

Nintendo, once more, released a minor hardware upgrade by just adjusting some of the things that were clearly wrong in the first iteration: they did it so many times now, it's not even funny anymore. They even advertised the fact that the new 3D can be seen from the side, so you don't need to keep you position fixed: amazing, it's like I release a gamepad that electrocutes you every one in a while, than I release a new iteration that doesn't do that and advertise this as a "feature".

From a consumers' standpoint, the best would have been to simply announce a new portable platform, with better internals for better graphics, because 3DS graphics are horrid, especially on the XL, and better controls, with a proper second analog. Due to the second analog and the new buttons, the fragmentation will still happen, but with the same shitty graphics.

I like the choice and positioning of the second shoulder buttons, and I understand that with those ergonomics a second full-size analog, symmetric to the first one, would have been impractical: even now the d-pad is too low to be really usable, especially because it's on the same vertical as the left analog: immagine the buttons to be lowered to that position, it would be unusable.

You can buy and play Xenoblade on a Wii or Wii U today. You don't own either? What is wrong with you!
Furthermore you can buy the joystick add-on for your 3DS to play any games that make use of the new nub, it is the same exact functionality.

Except it's fucking ugly and looks like someone stuck a sega cd on my 3ds.

I'm not "outraged", I just find it hilarious as a new hardware, which, whatever you try to argue, is obvious that it is. In the same way the New Ipad was new hardware. We are seeing the same exact tactic, just Nintendo style (in the most cheapest way).

From the moment it has a retail exclusive game (and probably more) in the way, stops being similar to a DSi and becomes similar to a GBC and other new hardware (you know that getting a PS2 you had access to a vast array of PS1 games?)

in the sense that it is 'literally' a new model hardware? then yeah that's true.

you didn't just compare the ps2 in context to the psx, as anywhere near comparable to what this 'new' 3ds model is in relation to the previous 3ds models, did you?

because they're completely different scenarios.
completely different hardware. completely different dev kits, completely different dev libraries, and most importantly, completely different games.
the ps2 isn't anymore a psx, as the ds was not a gba.
even though both latter systems could play the formers' games library.
i can't even believe that specific comparison was made. haha. :)

again this new hardware has the same dev cycle & expertise, same form, same library, same name, same graphics chip, only with a slight tech upgrade that is more comparable to what the 4mb expansion chip did for the n64.
and 1 exclusive retail game that is a port of another game, that wasn't as mega seller on a much larger user base to begin with…. and somehow this is going to be the crux that will 'fracture the user base'?

wow people are really, really trying to look at this negatively, because of 'x' reason (not you specifically).
