There is an option to sync your photos. If you opted out when you first got your phone nothing would have been uploaded. But if you accepted, then yes, your photos would now be synced somewhere in Google's "cloud". And deleting them is pretty difficult too, or at least I found it took way too much effort to do it. The sort of thing where I'd imagine it is easily possible a lot of people would think they deleted some photos, but haven't actually removed them from the "cloud". That said, I have no experience with iCloud.

But this is also a huge lesson in taking nude photos on yourself and saving them somewhere. Its just a bad idea. These photos are out in the internet now and forever and honestly, some of them are pretty well...intriguing so they'll never be forgotten.

iCloud.com does not let you view photos nor text messages, and only shows @icloud.com emails and contacts stored in iCloud itself (no different than gmail.com or contacts.google.com).

Photos taken on an iOS device upload to iCloud, as a backup, by default. It needs to disabled from the settings.
As a way to save your photos, it's great. But it can be hacked like any other service, such as via social engineering.

High profile celebrities can prove to be someone's time, specially if it was carried out by a group of skilled individuals. People out there exist who are really good at this shit
Even if iCloud was flawless, there's always a weak link in the chain that can be exploited to eventually follow a breadcrumb trail to someone's password. For example, most people recycle passwords and these celebrities were probably no exception. So someone could potentially obtain the email address they used for some online shopping, guess their way to the last digits of a credit card or use a receipt they found in the trash, reset that password, use that password to reset another email account that might lead to the iCloud account, etc. Thats just one example of the many ways this could be accomplished no hacking or vulnerabilities necessary. Just some good old fashioned social engineering.
This will likely result in Apple implementing mandatory 2-step verification for iCloud accounts.
