Just a heads up Newegg has a $150 off $500 or $75 off $300 if you pay in Bitcoin. That means the 5930k can be had for 439.99, or the 5920k $324.99.

I was on the edge but this pushed me to go X99, even though I have a perfectly fine z97 setup right now. I do use CF/SLI and may have a need for more than 32GB RAM in the future, so I think it's worth it to make the switch in my case.

Got the 5930k, Asus X99 Deluxe, and 32GB (4x8GB) GSKILL RAM.

I think my second Hard Drive which is what I use for everything but Windows is about to die on me. I want a best value for money replacement lined up for when the time comes.

I'm looking for 2TB's minimum and don't want to spend too much because I can't afford it as it is :L

I wonder if you can find external hardrives in thrift stores and crack them open for the HDD inside... Not that I've ever tried that, but somehow that's the first idea that popped into my head for cheap hardrives

So guys, I finally decided to make the plunge and buy myself a nice gaming PC. The thing is, I REALLY want a great, nearly "no-compromise" type of PC that will comfortably run everything I throw at it, but I'm not sure I can fully stomach the cost of one right now.

I did a lot of shopping over the past few days (OP has been a godsend, this thread is freaking amazing) and I ended up with a build that'll cost me nearly 2000 dollars (in Canada, everything from NCIX with some price matching done). That's a bit steep for me at the moment and I was wondering if I could get some help on choosing where to cut to end up with a balanced, great PC that will provide me the most bang for my money currently.

I'd really appreciate any help! Here's what I went with so far:

Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H

G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-14900CL9D-8GBXL 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1866

ASUS Radeon R9 290 DirectCU II OC 1000MHZ 4GB 5.0GHZ

Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 6Gbps SSD

Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Direct Touch 4

Fractal Design Define R4 ATX Tower Case

ASUS DRW-24F1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer

ASUS VS238H-P 23in Widescreen LED LCD Monitor 1920x1080 2ms

Microsoft Windows 8.1 64Bit English DVD OEM

Intel Core i7 4790K Unlocked Quad Core HT 4GHZ/4.4GHZ Processor LGA1150 Haswell 8MB Cache Retail

Corsair AX760 760W ATX 12V V2.31 80 Plus Platinum Modular Power Supply Active PFC 120mm Fan

Anything I should cut out / replace?

I need a new pc and I'm wanting to spend about $!000. I'm really looking at the mini-itx builds since I may turn this into a steam box. Feel free to pull me off the mini-itx path.

Right now, I'm mostly playing diablo 3 and starcraft 2 with fps issues. I don't do as much gaming as I used to.

The bitfenix prodigy case looks cool. I like the idea of having handles to bring my pc to lan parties.

Building a new computer for school.

Is there a list of recommended Power Supply brands?

I've always bought from Thermaltake, and I've had a 750w Thermaltake that lasted me for 6+ years and still going.

Might go with them again.

So I was wondering, if you have your PC plugged into your tv and go to play games that aren't controller supported what kind of wireless keyboard/mouse would folks recommend ? The sort of thing you can leave plugged into usb slots in your machine where you can then just leave/put away the wireless kb/m as you please.

Just something I was thinking about it :) I would assume with lag cause by wireless devices they wouldn't be any good for competitive multi games etc ?

Well, it's up and running.

No kidding, this was the most challenging build I've had in 15 years of doing this. Simply ridiculous.

  • Busted Corsair PSU
  • Busted Corsair H60
  • Mini-ITX Wiring Shenanigans
  • R9 290X Sizing Problems

I'll post some pics later on, but here are the specs:

  • Intel Core i7 4790k
  • ASUS Z97I Plus Mini ITX Mobo
  • 16GB of Crucial Ballistic RAM
  • Asus R9 290X 4GB Video Card with Custom Cooler
  • 2TB Seagate Hybrid Drive
  • Corsair Obsidian Mini ITX Case
  • Corsair CX 750 PSU

I want to upgrade my PC in 3 increments: first, memory; second, CPU; and third, GPU. I want to buy the memory during a Labor Day sale. Is my motherboard (link) compatible with any of this RAM?

Also, I'm confused whether the PCI-E x16 slot is 2.0 or 3.0. The PDF says it only has 2.0 but the website says it's 3.0. Will new graphics cards still work with 2.0?

To those of you who switched from air cooling to a closed loop cooling device (AIO cooler), do you like your decision? Has the change been noticeably louder? Is it worth the performance boost and lighter weight?

What is the best performing 120mm AIO on the market now? I'm thinking of getting one for my 5960X.

You probably want a 240 or 280mm for a 5960X. Those can have pretty crazy wattage demands overclocked. H220X or Nepton 280L are good choices based on reviews. I'm planning on going custom loop for Haswell-E. 480mm radiator just so I can have the fans spinning at lazy speeds.

That memory should work, just make sure you read where it tells you how to line up the dual channels.

The top slot should be PCI-Ex16 3.0, it might be a misprint error on the manual.

Pretty happy with my H80i. I keep the fans in quiet mode, and it's much quieter than my previous air cooler. Running it on a 4790K with a moderate OC (4.7GHz), temps seem normal. At work so I can't give temp data atm, but I've been pleased with it so far.

The only disappointment with it is the Corsair Link software is kinda shit.

I believe Seasonic, Corsair, and Antec are the best. I have a Thermaltake toughpower myself and it has done great. Stick with what's worked for you.

Research what budget PSUs are rebranded corsairs, seasonic etc. Those ones are fine to use. Corsair and the others have pretty good priced ones anyway.

Hey PCGaf! My brother is looking to build a new gaming desktop as we're preparing to move into a new apartment and he'll finally have room for it. He mainly uses his current laptop to play Dota 2 and some indie games, since other games like Skyrim run like crap on it.

I myself am not too well versed on PC gaming right now, although I have researched it quite a bit in the past. This will be his first time building a PC. Any suggestions and advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Basic Desktop Questions said:
- Your Current Specs: He's currently using a laptop for gaming. I don't remember the exact specs.
- Budget: Around $1200, and we live in the US.
- Main Use: Rate 1-5. 5 being Highest: Light Gaming [5], Gaming [5], Emulation (PS2/Wii) [1], Video Editing [1], Streaming games in HD [3], 3D/Model work (and what program) [1], General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p playback) [5].
- Monitor Resolution: He's mainly thinking about 1080p, but might upgrade to 1440p later on. He doesn't currently have a monitor.
- List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: He will be using it mostly for Dota 2 right now, but wants to play other PC exclusives as well (Like StarCraft II). 60+fps is a must, preferrably in Ultra settings.
- Looking to reuse any parts?: Nope.
- When will you build?: He's looking to get it within the next few weeks.
- Will you be overclocking?: Maybe? I'm not quite sure of the advantages of overclocking, the dangers, or what needs to happen for that to work efficiently.

The urge to buy white or red sleeved cables is so big, the 150$ price point makes it a bit harder to swallow though.

Does anyone in AU have any experience with cpu/gpu temperatures in summer? The room where my tower is doesn't have AC, and tends to get fairly toasty in summer. Worst comes to worst I'd have to invest in a h80i I guess.

For mass storage, how would this be rated among GAF?

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A2IM76K/?tag=neogaf0e-20

imo, a lot louder (and a lot more expensive) than an equivalent green/red without much in the way of performance gains over either

speaking of performance gains: not sure how good this OC's supposed to be and/or how much room I still have, but my 4790K's stable at 4.7 @ 1.29V (and I have the distinct feeling I could get that voltage further down)

I was considering RAID 1 with two of these, and noise isn't really a concern for me since I leave a fan on in my room just for the sake of white noise as it is. Overall though, you would consider these to be a high(er) end HDD?

slightly higher-end, yeah

(anyone in this thread's gonna tell you that all platter HDDs beyond 1TB are a bit of a crapshoot now, but you probably already know that anyway)

Yeah, I suppose if I get two of them in RAID 1, I'm not worried about one failing since I'll have the complete backup of the other, along with a 5 Year Warranty.

Fuck Corsair in the ass with a spiked baseball bat.

I turn off my PC for first time since getting it sorted on friday...it still runs.
Powersupply still going to the mobo, lights are on and PSU fans running.
Hit the switch at the back...lights still on...disconnect cable...lights still on...

Another component that apparently was fine. FUCK YOU CORSAIR

Only Corsair product that failed was the H100i but it leaked over everything [the gpu was toast, they covered 80% (of a new 780ti, no tax) and admitted fault, but wouldn't reimburse for any of the other new components including the sound card which were all new except the psu, and the sound card was making dodgy sounds but I couldn't test the other products easily - I assumed they would... I worded it so well - BIG MISTAKE. Parts get shipped back to me, one of the RAM sticks was fully faulty...in a twin set].

But I can't blame them for this...

The computer was staying on for way too long with no connection whatsoever except for a USB HUB with an external power supply...that was connected to a USB expansion card (also got leaked on) which was directly connected to the power supply.

Unplugging it turned it off instantly. I switched it for another usb port, directly on the mobo. [will investigate to see if it's the usb fan causing the issue...later].

...my bad

Oh man that was worrying. PvZ to chill.

I had a Corsair HX620 psu a few years ago that shot a 10cm flame out of the back when I turned my PC on. I've built my own PCs for 20 years now and put together hundreds in the early 2000s when I worked for a custom PC builder. I'd never seen anything like it before as I've always been sure to use quality PSUs in personal and business builds.

Through some miracle it didn't affect any other components but I've avoided their PSUs ever since. The supplier wouldn't have anything to do with it as it was over a year old. I tried to RMA it as it was in warranty. Corsair told me to send it back to Germany from the UK which was going to cost about £50 to courier from the UK as it was so damn heavy.

They told me they wouldn't reimburse that shipping even if the PSU was found to be faulty - which it obviously was as it was scorched to hell and back - so I said stuff it, didn't bother RMAing and just bought an Antec instead for the same price that the shipping cost would have been.

The HX620 was a rebadged Seasonic which are generally excellent quality so I don't know what could have happened there. However their customer service was so terrible I didn't want to give them any more of my money.

I haven't had to RMA any other PSUs ever so I can't compare the customer service experience. It's not like anyone else could be any worse though!

Wow. Complete opposite of the experience I had with Corsair RMA (but I live in the States)

Had a Corsair HX850 die on me. I assumed the warranty was only three years, wasn't until a month without a computer than I found the old box that said it was a 7 year warranty. Contacted Corsair and they set everything up, even emailed me a pre-paid UPS label so I wouldn't be out the shipping cost.

Turn around was about a week and a half.

Anyone else skipping Haswell E and DDR4 for a bit? I thought it would give me some tech lust and make me want to build a new PC. But my PC just has been rock solid and I think I'll just keep with how it is, maybe get Maxwell.

Haswell E is aimed at the top <1% of crazy PC builders so you can safely say most people will skip it. DDR4 will go mainstream with Skylake.

I'm sticking with my Ivybridge build for awhile. I'll upgrade my video card whenever Nvidia releases the 800/900 series.

I'll save up and go wild when the real good stuff hits.

Yeah, I've got about $200 in Amazon credit and this is killing me:

780 @ Amazon

I just keep telling myself to wait for the 880, but I'd be curious to know, too.
If you're planning on waiting for the 880, I would likely just do it. I'm doing that as well. I'm just genuinely curious to know what kind of real world gains can be expected between the two 700 series cards. Also, they're apparently just skipping the 800 series and just jumping to the 900 series. Lol

Is that a pretty good 780? I'm a little out of touch with what kinds of options exist for coolers and stuff. My budget is really $500 at the maximum, but I'd be willing to stretch it to $550 if it's a good value for a few years and it's on Amazon since I have so much credit there. I should also add, at least for the forseeable future this will be for gaming at 1920x1080 at 144hz. I'm not sure if that means I really need the 6gb or not or if I'd be okay with a 3GB card.
