Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS: All-Star Mode Implies More Characters Beyond the Leak

Are you sure? Melee looked like this:

Note how the clones are unaligned compared to the others. They're still right next to their series though, but they were deliberately positioned differently from the other characters.

+Leaving it at 49 characters seems a bit strange considering you could just throw in one more clone to make it an even and marketable 50.

The posters in Japan that have a different character in each one, and give a number to each character, seem to have the Mii Fighter variations separately. So, the official count would be 51, including the leak characters (or 40, with only the officially revealed characters right now).

Lucina, Dark Pit and Dr Mario aren't really that odd when you remember that the clones were separate from the rest of the cast in Melee, even if closer to their own series than in this new screen. The real oddities there are Yoshi mixed up with the Mario cast in spite of being otherwise classified as his own series in Smash, and Game & Watch's position.

What ?

If Anything in meele the clones were touching their series AND the cloned character

Are you sure? Melee looked like this:

All series are together. Ganondorf even manages to be part of the Zelda section while also being placed next to the character he is a clone of.

People find it odd that, in the Smash 4 3DS roster, a clone like Toon Link is with his series, but other clones are off in a corner separate from their fellow series men.

I hope this Smash lets me customize the roster select screen not only to confuse speculation but also so I can organize who I play as the most and who I will never play as at all.

But they weren't aligned with the other selection screen boxes. This would be just a new way to keep them differentiated from the others, even if not as elegant as Melee's way.

Has anyone been able to figure out the right pixel dimensions for the character boxes so that the whole screen is filled with just the characters we know about? If so, maybe that can give a clue as to whether the CSS layout is intentional and final, because if there are no more characters beyond the ESRB leak then Sakurai would've filled up the screen for sure. I understand that goes against Melee's CSS slightly, but it doesn't contradict Brawl's.

Ganondorf is the only one not aligned and he is on the side of the character select screen ... so no space

The leaker just shot himself in the foot by saying it is a complete roster leak.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Sakurai (I'm an expert), but OCD and Menu placement are huge parts of him. It's not like it is in Playstation All Stars where you can put every characer and menu like an asshole. If someone screw some simple menu position on a Sakurai game, he bring shame to himself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is release a patch.

First time I've heard of this info.
Yes! The total number of trophies unlocked changes drastically (like by the hundreds) throughout the video. There's not any doubt.

The fact that the character select screen does not fit the usual Sakurai OCD is a more telling that there are characters left to unlock than this to me =P

For those who don't remember :

Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr Mario and Maybe Bowser JR and Game & Watch (maaaaybe even Ness since now he is the only representative of his NES franchise) are in very bizarre places considering how every full unlocked roster was on past games
Compar
I don't see how any "the screen looks weird so this can't be final" arguments can be made when it's obvious that Sakurai considers Yoshi to be more of a Mario character than Rosalina now, despite him never lumping the two together that greatly before. Things change.

-The possibility of multiple save files being used for the ESRB footage (though why not use the master file with everything unlocked?)
Maybe the debug mode or default save is outdated and so while it used to unlock all fighters it no longer does.

This kind of plays in with the rampant speculation that Brawl had Sonic, Toon Link, Wolf and Jigglypuff were developed very late in Brawl (based off their absence from SSE, Sonic is a last minute as you can get but the other 3 are really randomly placed).

I thought that was showing the loot received screen (11 pieces of loot which happened to have a few trophies) compared with the trophy viewer.

Here's something to think about in terms of OCD...

If you move Duck Hunt and ROB to the next row and move the clones to the bottom...that row (starting with Ness but then would be starting with Duck Hunt) consists entirely of franchises with single character representation (assuming Lucas is cut). Not only that, but the characters would be in order of their franchise's first appearance (by year). Sakurai is making a big deal about year of first appearance in general this time. I think it makes sense for this row to follow this pattern. Two more reps in the row that currently has Duck Hunt and ROB would push them down. For speculation's sake let's say it's Wolf and Mewtwo--who would fit perfectly. That new row of single reps would also have room for more, like potentially Ice Climbers.

Don't really see why the roster selection isn't like this:

Just replace Mii with another random icon when customisation is off to keep the symmetrical layout.

Also thought I'd put one together if everyone returned from Brawl:

Not bad observation. Little Mac, Game & watch and Shulk are all single character representation.

Still the multi fighter franchises are a bit of a mess before Zelda. DK and Mario are in the wrong order (DK predates Mario even if it is both characters first appearance, unless DK Arcade is being counted as a Mario game in which Mr. Game & watch is a combo breaker).

Maybe the logic in what arranges the character select screen has some bugs being tested (assuming it always tries to make a screen of *multi franchise orders* *single ordered* *clones* *guests*) I notice Bowser J.r Should be before Rosalina and Jigglypuff before Lucario (unless those out of order ones are hidden or something but I don't feel comforable with starting with Luigi in that case).

My theory is really just for that second to last row and is in terms of franchise debut. I don't really have an explanation for why Game and Watch, Little Mac, and Shulk would be in other places other than the simple fact that they needed to go somewhere and the rows they are currently on would otherwise need to be broken up in a way that would make everything messy. I think the clones stick together on the bottom row. They are grouped as clones instead of with their franchises because it would similarly make things messy. You can't put both Lucina and Dark Pit on their franchises' row without splitting some franchise up.

Basically I expect the roster to at least be this:

Row 1: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Wario, Game and Watch (9 characters)
Row 2: DK, Diddy Kong, Link, Zelda, Shiek, Ganondorf, T. Link, Samus, ZSS (9 characters)
Row 3: Pit, Palutena, Marth, Ike, Robin, Kirby, Dedede, Meta Knight, Little Mac (9 characters)
Row 4: Fox, Falco, Wolf, Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Another Pokemon (probably Mewtwo) (9 characters)
Row 5: Duck Hunt, ROB, Ness, Captain Falcon, Villager, Olimar, Wii Fit Trainer (7 characters)
Row 6: Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, Lucina, Shulk, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Sonic (7 characters)

And possibly this:

Row 1: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Wario, Game and Watch (9 characters)
Row 2: DK, Diddy Kong, Link, Zelda, Shiek, Ganondorf, T. Link, Samus, ZSS (9 characters)
Row 3: Pit, Palutena, Marth, Ike, Robin, Kirby, Dedede, Meta Knight, Little Mac (9 characters)
Row 4: Fox, Falco, Wolf, Pikachu, Charizard, Lucario, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Another Pokemon (probably Mewtwo) (9 characters)
Row 5: Duck Hunt, ROB, Ice Climbers, Ness, Captain Falcon, Villager, Olimar, Wii Fit Trainer, Chorus Men (9 characters)
Row 6: Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, Lucina, Shulk, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Sonic (7 characters)

I would make a visual representation of this if I was a bit better with photoshop.

There's too many unknowns to extrapolate any real substance from this. The build submitted for rating would not necessarily be final code, which calls into question the layout and such, as well as the availability of modes. There's no guaranteed consistency between the order of leaked shots and available content: All Star may have been taken prior to the unlocked characters, multiple save files might be in use to access tiers of content, and so on. Finally, we don't really know how anal Sakurai and co would be about a perfectly neat roster alignment. Melee didn't have it, and if the intention is to fill spots with DLC that could leave openings. It's fun to speculate, but really anything could happen. Maybe the roster has five more slots. Maybe it doesn't.

That being said, Sakurai has demonstrated himself as one of the most pop culture/internet community savvy developers within Nintendo, at least publicly. That the roster has leaked and footage has been taken down I doubt is something unknown to him. He's also notorious for fucking with his fans and playing with expectations. So while I don't like grabbing at straws, I don't think the idea of him talking about All Star mode and specifically highlighting the icon indicating locked characters as a means of deferring belief the leaked roster is complete, when the exact same discussion surrounding the exact same icon was had, is all that far fetched.

I certainly hope it's true. I'd like to see the roster, which is already pretty excellent, expanded by five more characters. Ideally Ice Climbers and Mewtwo would help cement the roster as a near perfect replication of Smash64, Melee, and Brawl. Snake, obviously, would be golden, but I don't think that's happening. Another DK would help pad out his representation, like a semi-Diddy clone in Dixie. And whatever two spots left not filled by fucking sword fighters.

People still complain about people fighting with pointed sticks yet most of the roster has people fighting with fisticuffs and falcon kicks?

can't wait to play Smash, also on 3DS. But about the roster, I'll just wait the game, and maybe the DLCs. There are so many characters already confirmed, and various newcomers really please me, so...I'm already happy. If they'll manage the DLCs like in MK8, it will be even better.

He was announced as a Assist Trophy a long while ago....sorry buddy :(
Hrmm...welp, then my vote goes to Malon, Groose, or possibly Saria I guess. I've said it before but I still hold hope for some kind of Monster Hunter character, could be decent timing with MH4's release later.

Hence why I'm puzzled as to why Mii fighter didn't get much ESRB exposure.

Though I guess Tharja's ass is more raunchy.

They probably had supplementary materials explaining what Miis do. Miis were completely absent from the leak, there were menus shots of them.

It's obviously not the final roster. Or at least, the final arrangement. That leaked SSB4 pic has an odd number of columns and Kirby isn't dead center (see Brawl pic). It's not OCD, it's Sakurai playing favorites. :p

I don't know how All-Star mode is playable without all characters unlocked though.

Ironically enough Ryce posted this before the update.

Someone on GameFAQs has shown that the character select screen actually isn't random at all. Multi-rep series and one-rep series are separately listed in the order of their debut.

Coincidentally, after adding the four DLC characters I'm expecting the most (Wolf, Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, and Chorus Kids), everything still holds up:

DUfnbNo.png

I don't expect any more characters other than 51 characters leak at the launch. I will be happy if I'm proven wrong! :)

See, and that's what I don't get. Why cut a unique character like Snake in smash? I feel as though this particular game in the series is getting way more exposure than Brawl so it would be an injustice to cut snake from the roster. He would definitely bring in not only his fans but an older crowd to smash as well, because among gamers of this era, Snake is very well known.

The position of the clones (toon link, falco hello ?) and single series characters (Game & wacth ?) still don't make any sense
