Finally got around to reading the Fraction/Aja Immortal Iron Fist.

It was brilliant. I remember checking out the first few issues when it first came out but I kind of lost interest in comics around World War Hulk/Secret Invasion time. Orson Randall is a badass. Top Tier Comics here though. .

for real, been a big fan ever since & that run is the high bar by which i judge the book...again Living Weapon isn't nearly on that level, for me.

Oh man. This 50th issue of Doom Patrol (the
LSD
issue), is nuts.
I've got plenty of free time today and am in the right frame of mind to focus on reading, so hopefully I'll be able to enjoy quite a few issues of Doom Patrol today.

Also, I keep feeling bad that Daredevil OHC vol. 2 has been sitting on my shelf unread for a while. I loved vol. 1 so much and there's really no good reason I haven't read vol. 2 yet. Maybe I'll read that after Doom Patrol.

I know Viewtiful has read this great write up on Frank Miller, but the rest of you should check it out as well.

Ooh, that looks great. I'll definitely give that a read in a bit.

OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! Thanks this thread for making me aware of Doom Patrol.

Just read the first two issues and I'm loving it! With a name like "Doom Patrol" I expected something goofy but man did I get the opposite the way Morrison works these horror elements in was just down right eerie it reminds me of the early issues of Sandman.

Is the rest of the run just as good?

Like the other guys said, the rest of the run is even better than that first arc. The first arc is kind of just lays the groundwork and gets you slightly prepared for the insane amazingness and absolute perfection that is the rest of the run. The whole run so far (I'm at issue 50, so I'm about 3/4ths through it) has been relentlessly incredible. Out of the whole run, I'm pretty certain the first arc is my least favorite (not to say it wasn't a fantastic arc though, it's just that everything else is That Good).

I'm not as far as Kipp is, but it's amazing. One of the best series I've read.

Where are you at now?

I note that there is supposed to be a new Grant Morrison/Frazier Irving joint out next week, and only one person mentioned it.

Ooh yes! I had kind of forgotten about this! I remember someone mentioned it a month or two ago and the interview about it that they linked had me super excited about it. I'll definitely pick up the trade for this. It should be totally nuts and hopefully amazing.

My Animal Man Omnibus just arrived

Woo!

^Never read any Howard myself, but the book's been OOP for a while I believe. Should be worth it!

Yeah, I agree completely. When I picked up the first trade last month I was raving about the first arc but literally everything after manages to get even better somehow. Between the totally insane arcs and the hilarious oneshots, this book never stops being great once it gets going.

Where are you at now?
I just finished 48 earlier sooo I'm only a few behind now! I work tonight so I'm done for the day I think.

  • Original Sin #8
  • Rocket Raccoon #3
  • She-Hulk #8

Just based on the preview for tomorrow's issue:
There was a super powerful young mutant kid that Xavier met during the O5 era. Don't know how it will play out, but I'm sure it will be the reason why he left the damn school to Mystique.

Iron Fist Living Weapon #5 was my favorite issue so far, but i think this one will be an MU title i read when i resub eventually at the next sale. I'm not a big fan of the tone or this Danny Rand.

I got a Morning Glories collection for my birthday; first 12 issues. I have no idea what to expect, but I do remember being slightly intrigued by the art when it was first coming out. What's the verdict?

I was always into the story, but the art left me kinda cold. Curious how it all shook out.

I read the first trade and I liked it but I remember Freeza saying the series gets really convoluted over time.

Multiversity has a great interview with Ales Kot. He seems to be fully embracing his role as the Grant Morrison for a new generation and talks about magic and being a shaman among other things.

Check it out

That was terrific.
Articles like that get me itching to read ten comics at once. I'm just so excited about comics in general after finishing that.

This kind of blew me away:

The other really striking aspect of Miller’s mid-to-late-’80s work is just how much of it there was. The first issue of The Dark Knight Returns hit in February of ’86. Miller also returned to Daredevil that month, writing the first of six issues full of ripe Catholic imagery, subsequently collected as Daredevil: Born Again. The miniseries Elektra: Assassin, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz, began in August of that year and ran through the following March. The graphic novel Daredevil: Love and War, another collaboration with Sienkiewicz, came out in December of ’86. And “Year One” ran in the pages of Batman between February and May of ’87. That’s one of the most astonishing 12-month hot streaks in the history of comics — the weakest of those projects is Love and War, and Love and War is still kind of a masterpiece, even if it’s basically just a showcase for Sienkiewicz, probably the greatest abstract painter ever to work in comics.

Also, MY MAN:

Gibbons and Miller would revisit Martha on and off throughout the ’90s in a string of stories that don’t get discussed enough.

That's great.

If I remember right Pappademas kind of dumps on Ronin a bit -- which, not cool, man - but he does really highlight the fact Miller produced a consistently strong body of work until very recently. The most interesting thing about that 86-67 run, I think, is that the two strongest pieces were essentially throwaway works for him. Born Again was a cash-in while he was dead broke after moving to California and Elektra: Assassin was supposed to be a fun project for him and Siekiewicz while they were producing what they considered their "true" masterpiece in Love and War.

Also brings to mind a very funny thing Howard Chaykin said recently:

"The only man of my generation that's still producing work that's not a parody of itself is Walter Simonson. Simonson's doing amazing work."

Does Bendis
know how to create any other kind of mutant?

The next original team he makes is going to be a bunch of reality warping a-holes.

I dropped it a few issues ago, as I just got tired of waiting for answers that never come. The book is a very slow burn, most Nick Spencer books are. And while you get the basic gist of the story over time, you never quite get the whole picture, and it gets pretty frustrating when you're thirty-some-odd issues in and you still don't quite know what's going on. Or you'll have a basic idea of how things are playing out only to find that a character isn't at all who you thought they were. It was mostly the artwork that kept me around so long, but I just had to give up eventually. I'm sure it'll all make perfect sense when the series is done, but in the meantime, this shit is more confusing than a DC event.

Speaking of Simonson, is anyone reading Ragnarok? I picked up the first issue but haven't gotten around to it. He's never let me down before, so I'm sure it'll be at least "good".

I am soooooooo happy for this!! It's been years since I've been able to enjoy Catwoman. (Not counting my recent Brubaker reread)

Yeah, same here. So happiness! Much excite!

The new Catwoman thing kinda makes sense, since Selina will be off being Kingpin of Crime in Batman Eternal.

I really like the idea of having split (but intertwining) story-lines between the two Catwomen, if that's the way they're going. We've obviously seen the legacy thing before, but never with such a morally grey character.

Does this guy have an own RSS Feed? Love this two articles, I am desperatly in search of some good Comic Blogs and this guy is perfection.

Not that I'm aware of. He's a pop culture contributor for Grantland and occasionally writes comics based articles.

And this really impacts no one here but me and KoruptData, but hilariously enough Cincinnati is getting a third con next year - http://www.derbycitycomiccon.com/queencity.php

Then maybe I am just going to bookmark him and try to look after a new post from time to time.

Anyway, thanks for posting this blog, both articles were a fantastic read and now I want to read from Millers Daredevil and Sin City stuff :D

Just read Thor:God of Thunder(well all the issues that are actually up on Unlimited)

Goddamn that was good stuff, whatever plans they have for Thor 3 they need to scrap it all and just adapt the God-Butcher storyline.

What are some other great Thor comics that stand up to this?

J. Michael Straczynski also wrote an ongoing Thor series not too long ago. Seems to be pretty well regarded around the internet. I haven't read it myself despite owning the hardcovers.

That looks very enticing. I may even consider checking out a more pulpy, noir Catwoman.

JMS Thor was great. I didn't like where some of the plotlines went after it was taken over from him, though.

Art is by Coipel btw. It's good, but may feel slow for a lot of people. To me it was building up to something good and I really enjoy it.

I read good things about Daredevil: End of Days, so I decided to give it a whirl. It was... okay? It wasn't bad, it was pretty good, but I don't think it loved up to the hyperbole. If you don't know what it is, it's a miniseries about the death of Matt Murdock, and Ben Urich is investigating the meaning behind his final words, 'Mapone'.

It certainly left me with some questions.

Why would Bullseye kill himself after hearing 'Mapone'. Did Punisher really know what Mapone meant? Why was he murdering all of Daredevil's enemies, cause now Matt couldn't stop him? How many goddamn kids did Matt have? Matt is such a horndog.

It's a pretty dark book. The ending was certainly interesting, but I figured out how it would end by Issue 3 (mostly).

Just started reading Sex Criminals. It's quite good, there's no way I'd go and buy it phyiscal though haha
