Apple announces Apple Watch

$349 device should come with $500 device for free.

What a great suggestion.

The iPhone doesn't even need to be $500 to begin with, does it? I'm pretty sure Apple isn't selling them at a loss. An unlocked iPhone should not be $500. More like $300.

Why, when there's *plenty* of demand for it at the current price, would they price it 50% lower?

Guess there are a lot more rich people in this world than I thought. I mean damn, $500 for a god damn cellphone. That's ridiculous. A $350 watch that requires a $500 cellphone is even more ridiculous.

Hate the hardware and software design. And $350 as a starting point.
It's really hard for me to find anything to like in this watch. Even Apple Watch feels estranged.
It doesn't look like an Apple product to me.

This is going to be a flop.

I don't understand the 'Smart Watch' obsession; if it was a strong market digital watches would have evolved - but no, they died.

I feel like people keep talking about it and realising that the latest version 'doesn't quite do it'; truth is all these people rabbiting on about 'Wearable Technology' are Software obsessives, a traditional watch IS wearable technology.

We need more engineers in tech media.

Yeah.

I think there is a market for a smart-watch. My brother this week got the Moto360 and after being a skeptic, likes it quite a bit. (No issues with battery life yet).

The functionality of time was replaced by phones. So you need to sell it as fashionable accessory, or with functionality that makes it worth wearing it.

I don't think so. People do not want to wear watches. Period.

apple has a certain type of following though that will buy anything they put out. apple could release the iplug where you put their buttplug in your ass and it vibrates whenever you get a text and I can grantee you that will be a hit. obviously I'm exaggerating but what I'm saying isn't too far off from the fact that it's mainly being purchased for the name and satisfaction more-so than the practicality of the device.

That price is crazy even by Apple standards. How can that watch be the same price as an iPad? How can 3 of those watches be the same cost as a Macbook Air?

Edit: I guess 1st gens are always more money.

At $350 I feel that Apple is pushing that brand loyalty pretty far though.

I'm guessing this is what people were referring to? Cook doing that to get people to randomly stand and applaud? I couldn't watch it all as the stream was terrible and buffering all the time.

I don't think they are. The iphone is already very expensive and I feel that most people who have the money to purchase iphones every two years usually wont be breaking the back spending an extra $350. I don't think ti's going to be as common as past devices though. I think it's kind of useless and wont really benefit many in a practical way but it will sell regardless.

The only thing more saddening than apple fanboys is apple haters.

I still remember the early debates and warnings about having RF antennas/wi-fi too close to human skin, being exposed constantly.
All those studies and debates have died down and now we will start to wear those devices directly on the skin, radiating constantly and communicating with other devices we also carry around.

During a tech conference I once overheard a guy from a giant mobile/wi-fi/broadband corp doing smalltalk that went like this: "we basically make a giant field test on our society currently, we might sacrifice this generation but humans will probably grow immune to it in the long term.

Will this be the new smoking in 50 years?

I'm just saving this thread for future references. Although, the iPad got a bit more hate and suspicion about it's success.

It's not ugly, not objectively and it has plenty of designs to appeal to many tastes. The AppleWatch Sport is kind of lame, but so are all other sport tech.

Hmm. Jury is still out for me. The UI interests me. I feel like I would wear this about six inches up from my wrist and facing inwards.

Jesus christ, that's one ugly motherfucker. It's a sad day when Motorola designs something more beautiful than you, Apple. Too bad about the moto 360 shitty battery.

This will fail. Not because people don't need it - many unnecessary electronics sell well. It will fail because a watch is primarily a individualized fashion statement, so you will look like a tool wearing it. I honestly believe they needed a minimum of 5 distinct varieties for this to become extremely popular. I personally wanted it to look like this:

I'm still not sold on the turning knob thing.

Why would I waste my time turning a knob to view things on a miniature screen when I can just pull my phone out?

Yeah, that's what I don't get about some of the applications of a smart watch. Status messages and quick replies? I get that. Even navigation I can get behind. But looking at a map or photos if a phone is a necessary companion? The time it takes to get the phone out of your pockets is easily made up by not having to deal with turning knobs and such, apart from the whole much bigger screen thing.

No, I agree with you is what my post meant after going to the Verge and checking the new article list.

oh lol thought you meant my post.

sometimes British slang confuses me with its pronoun usage :p

In all seriousness though, they've obviously been on a huge decline since Topolsky left. Given that the yearly Apple iPhone event coverage is the largest in terms of tech media clicks, this was essentially their make it or break it moment. Thus far, clearly looks to be the latter.

Serious question. If you pay using the Apple Watch do you just bypass the TouchID authentication or did I miss something?
One of the sensors on the watch just takes a blood sample from you.

Serious answer: That's a good question, but probably yes. Everything else wouldn't really work.
