Apple announces Apple Watch

Smart watches are a solution in search of a problem, and in the end Apple couldn't offer up anything to change that either.

Design-wise it's a 1970's vision of the future.

I feel like I'd rather take the .5 seconds to pull my phone out of my pocket and have an uncompromised experience...

I agree that the things I prefer to do on my phone now, I may continue to prefer on my phone.

But ultimately what will make this device succeed (or not) are the things that it does that I don't currently do with my phone: health tracking, Minority Report-ish TV/game remote control, payments, ticketless event entry, keyless hotel entry, etc.

Just like Apple spent a TON of time on the iPhone Home button, I have no doubt the Watch dial will feel great. This is Apple. This stuff is what they really pay attention to. If you hate the idea, I say wait to try it first.

He has been lately, for some unknown reason.

I am not a fan of any company in particular. I just like good stuff. Apple makes good stuff. So does Google. But neither are perfect. Apple is better in that they bring loads of attention to a party. They're really good for the industry pioneers. NFC will now be more popular. Everyone wins.

I'm very impressed. While not the most striking design, it appears to be by far the most complete, considered attempt at a smart watch. The fact there are two sizes from the start makes it the best by default.

This is what people said about the iPad. I remember, I was one of them. I use my tablet daily and wouldn't trade for the netbooks we had before.

Consumer electronics are always relatively superficial. It's not about a need rather than added comfort. Phablet in a backpack + small wearable screen for rapid fire notification / interaction is not fulfillment, it's comfort, and that's already nice.

$349 when the Samsung smartwatch flopped at $200.

You can buy an iPad mini for that price.

Interested in seeing exactly how well this does at that price point.

Yeah I feel like that price is way too much to try to convert people like me, who don't wear watches, into buying an Apple Watch. Maybe next year the price will come down.

Is the Apple Watch designed to be only worn on the left hand? I would imagine usage on the right wrist would be quite difficulty, especially accessing the crown.

Looks just as stupid and pointless as the iPad did.

People will probably eat it up because after the iPod and iPhone, Apple can do no wrong. :/

I don't think it looks good (in pics, at least). But I also think that will have nothing to do with whether it succeeds. Its features and interface seem very well thought out -- which is the kind of "design" they were more worried about. How it feels, how it works, and what it does are what will ultimately matter.

That's the stuff that's harder to fix, down the line.

I think smart watches have a lot of potential, but I also feel that the closer tech is to our body, the more the 'technological' trappings need to be invisible to the user. I don't know if we're there yet.

The ipad was a hybrid of two prexisting and widely used technologies, computer and smartphones, bridging the gap between them.

This is not that. This is apple trying to create a whole new technology -- wrist top computers -- that so far have limited consumer demand.

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Don't underestimate the power of convenience. It probably won't happen right away at these prices, but once smart watch models get as cheap as $50-$99 I could see them becoming very mainstream.

Well they did this with personal computers too. No demand and then they created demand.

I don't know if wearables will be a long term success, but your argument is based on traditional business advice, which Apple has historically gone against, some to their detriment and many to their benefit.

Did they mention anything about custom watch faces? By that I mean not custom widgets on the watch over a background, but fully custom watch faces?

I think it looks sexy and I want one.

(Yeah yeah, avatar quote. Etc.)

It's about $100 too expensive for an impulse buy but since it doesn't come out for months, I'll probably save up for one.

I understand your opinion and I think it's a totally sane way to look at it. However, you can just as well imagine that in hindsight people will say smartwatches have bridged the gap between the always-connected screen that is the smartphone and the need for smaller, fashionable and unobtrusive screens. The wristwatch, after all, was already a reply to the chain watch that you had to dig out of your pockets.

Time will tell, no pun intended.

Question is, though, can I hide it up my butt?

For sure. They're impossible things to truly convey through words and media. I think once people actually start using it for themselves it'll catch on like wildfire like past Apple products.
Or it turns into the Apple TV, around but no one really cares.

So, I'm confused. Is the Apple Watch Sport a cheaper version of the standard watch, or is it more expensive because it is lighter? I know they haven't talked price yet, but I'm not sure which one is supposed to be "premium".

My wife wears a watch all day long and often doesn't want to dig her phone out of her purse to use it, so I think eventually she will get one of these Apple Watches.

Why would you pay 350$ to wear something like that on your wrist, I wouldn't even replace my own watch (which is very inexpensive) with this if it was given to me.

I guess they're not trying to get anyone else than their usual customer base to buy this.

Interesting that cell phones largely supplanted wrist watches, and now we're seeing a sort of resurgence with smartwatches like Apple Watch or Android Wear.

gold one is the “best” premium.

the sport one seems to be the base model, using plastic straps. I think the metal strap stainless steel “watch edition” is the more expensive version.

Well, the fitness stuff seems pretty cool if you don't already wear/carry a fitbit type device. I know my wife has zero interest in carrying around a fitbit in her pocket all day the way I do, but having it incorporated into a watch is pretty appealing.

It isn't that hard to imagine a world where people aren't driving around holding phones in front of their face to talk, text or look at directions. Or where people don't pull their phone out every two seconds to check a notification or the time or just to make sure they didn't miss a notification that never came.

It isn't hard to imagine a world where this thing totally flops either. I don't know which would be better. A smartwatch future just seems a bit pretentious.

It doesnt look bad but not also good.
Who knows may be it will be successful just like ipad which people like me tought was just larger iphone

I'm not in love with the design, but the interface seems very well thought-out, so I still want one.

I wear my watches on the right wrist as well. Hoping there's a software option to flip the screen upside-down so you can just wear it like that, and then the crown will be on the left side and accessible with the left hand.

I see no use for this.

I don't even think Apple can make the smartwatch an everyman device, but depending on your needs smartwatches can be an attractive thing. People who work in the service industry who can't be nose-deep in their phone on shift, people who work with their hands, etc.
