I'm usually not a fan of gold watches but that looks really nice.
Samsung's new smartwatch is essentially independent of the phone beyond the initial set up. Has its own sim card and everything.
While I see the reception here has been overwhelmingly negative, personally I'm still interested, I'll be ordering the normal black one with the normal strap as soon as preorders start.
It certainly seems very 'gen 1', and people are not going to be replacing watches once a year for sure, but I want to see how valuable I find having a smartwatch, I've had no need for a watch for years.

That's what's so weird about this reveal. When has Apple ever done anything this tacky, as far as interface goes?

Because I also thought the same when the iphone came out.
I got one and proudly brought it to work, people thought it was an ipod touch and I got the impression people didn't think I was serious enough at work. This was the iphone 3G by the way (a good two years after the iphone came out). So I switched back to a horrible nokia bar phone and used that for two years because well, it looked like a phone just for work.
Pissed off still at that decision because the iphone is better in every way.
And oh yeah people really started getting in on the iphone 4 at work, which really annoyed me because I was back on the nokia.
But in regards to your comment, people will buy this, just because. They will buy it, complain about how expensive it is, and how they have no money left etc etc.

Anyway 350$ is too much. Can't justify it yet. I'd be interested at the 150-200$ price point.

Personally I think that's the wrong way to go about it. Why the hell would I want a SIM card for my watch when I'm carrying my phone 24/7 anyways. Although being able to use the Apple Watch as an actual watch and as a way to continue to to keep track of your heart rate / etc. for those times when I'm running without a phone would be nice.
I think you are misremembering the iPad launch and its reception post-launch. Many of the use cases presented for the iPad didn't materialize that well (productivity for one?), and many people ended up using it as a content consumption device.

The reaction in the mainstream, tech and fashion press has actually been surprisingly positive.
As a geek, I agree that this first generation is lackluster in the sense that it clearly is intended to serve as a base upon which they're going to build in further generations. Tons of rumored sensors aren't in there and one could safely guess they'll be coming in generations 2, 3, 4, etc. and despite looking really good, it's still on the thick side.
But judging from the reaction today outside of web forums (and Wall Street, which was somehow disappointed by today's event?), you're kidding yourself if you think they won't sell them by the truckload when they come out next year. Even online, the reaction is much the same as we saw with the iPad in 2010, and look where we are today.

Alright, I thought this was stupid at first, but I just watched the video on the Apple website. I think I'm a convert. My favorite thing is the tap feature. That is so cool. So from anywhere, I can tap on my wrist and my friend will feel the same tap, plus I can sketch out a short message. That is very personal and, dare I say, innovative. That's one of those beyond technology things.

That's technology staying out of the way. No need to pull out the phone and type a message or make a call. You're always connected to your friends.
I'm still not going to buy one yet. I'll get the second gen one once I get a new phone.

A $350 watch is not a status symbol.
You can already tell how dated this model is going to look in 3 years when this product category matures. Like the pre-4 phone designs.

If I ever decide to get a watch, it'll definitely be that Space Black Link Bracelet Apple Watch. Looks so good. But I still don't think smart watches bring that much utility and convenience to the table for me. The only definite buys for me this year and next is a new iPad Mini and iPhone 6.
The initial cost estimates for the Edition ones are between 5k and 10k. I'd call that a status symbol.
Just saying, the key word is starting at $350.
No iphone looks dated after the 4. Those all still look great.
I think it is the big bulbous chrome curves that is making it already seem dated to me. That design feels so old, perhaps because of the association with the original iphone.

Also, since we're all dudes here, we're underestimating how much women will love this thing. Above and beyond just being a status symbol, it means they won't have to rummage through their purse or their clutch for every little thing.
It means they won't have to have their phones in their hands when out in bars or clubs, and lots of women I know have lost phones this way.
My GF is already hooked on the Gold Edition versions. This thing is going to sell like hot cakes, and when they make it sleeker and more functional in a year, it's going to work really well.

Agreed. The gear is still a slave to disgusting samsung visual cues, fonts, notifications, icons, etc.
The way you can personalize the appearance of the apple watch + the more "adult" look of Apple's typography, more consistent visual language, the variety of appealing clock designs, etc. put it far above it imo.
I'd never wear a samsung watch, it's visual diarrhea on a screen held together by an ok looking band. Im actually considering the apple one. UI is far more elegant, control system is much better, and the selection of straps and material mean there is a design in there that I would be ok wearing on my wrist all day long.
Apple watch looks way more polished. You can tell the build quality is leagues a head of it.
I'd consider buying something like this ~5 years when the designed has matured more. Other than that, normal watches will still reign supreme. Especially the high end, those will remain untouchable forever. No one is going to by this as a status symbol. That's what something like an IWC is for.

A round watch means you lose quite a lot of surface area. If you want straight lines in the graphics, you're losing a decent chunk at the top, bottom, and sides.
Essentially the round watch would be smaller than this, and then the interactive surface area for most apps would be even smaller than that. You sacrifice a lot by going with the round watch, even if it does look sexier.

I am in the same camp. I like what they showed in the video, and am interested in seeing how it would fit in with the way I already use my phone.
I guess we'll see - but they've gotta start somewhere. The OG iPhone didn't start with apps, was an edge phone, and didn't have copy/paste - I still loved the heck out of that thing despite many drawbacks.

Just to bring this video up again, I appreciate a lot of the design aspects that have gone into the watch itself, but anything in this video that's talking about functionality is just so hilariously bloated with meaningless buzz adjectives while somehow also simultaneously being completely devoid of any compelling reason to buy the product they're talking about, outside of... picking up your heartrate on a run?
Shame with all the work they did on the ancillary stuff like the band and charging that the watch itself looks like a 2003 iPod.

As long as I can strap a leather band on the sports watch, so I can switch between it and the sports band if I'm working out or not, I'll be a happy man

My problem is that I will not buy an IPhone so I can use the watch, even though I really want one now. I did not expect this.
I like the simplicity of it, and it looked super intuitive. Unless you buy the gold version or one of the more horrifying straps it does not look tacky. I hated the new IPhone, I think the whole wallet thing causes more problems then it solves, but I liked the watch. If I could simply use it with connectivity to iTunes or any Apple product that is available on non Apple hardware, I would totally buy it.

All their 1st gen stuff looks like this. The thickness + lack of GPS is a reason to wait though.
I haven't worn a watch for at least a decade and have resisted getting Nike Fit type devices as well. If I'm wearing something on my wrist, it has to be multi-functional and sexy. I'm not blowing a 100 bucks for tech that does one thing and will be replaced by the first decent smart watch that comes out.
I'm also not interested in wearing $5,000 watches as status symbols just to tell time. Height of vanity in my eyes and the day I do is the day I think of myself as a sell out POS.

You can change the bands on any of the watch faces. That combo there is part of the regular Apple Watch models that are stainless steel so it should be one of the cheaper ones.
They all have the interchangeable bands. It's the stainless version of the watch itself which is supposed to be the cheapest one, but the link bracelet is likely to be either a separate purchase or a more expensive version (since it seems more expensive to make than those plastic bands). I'd guess something like $450 for this exact configuration?
