I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around what kind of JRPG this is. I know Gust makes the Atelier games, which I love, but this game reminds me
in a bad way
of Mugen Souls. Basically just start on one end of a field area, run to an event point, fight a boss, repeat.

I'd love to be wrong, but it's hard to tell what this game's like from footage. Anyone have a better idea? At the very least it sure is pretty.

its pretty much largely a traditional JRPG with extended visual novel segments

Its a very orthodox RPG, if you can before release, check out any of the Ar Tonelico games. Although try not to play Qoga, but if that's your only option.

This gameflow chart on the site explains the basics of it, in other words, very traditional. I played the import to note, and all of the above. Imagine a more traditional style RPG with light crafting elements from the Atelier games, indepth visual novel sections, and extremely beautiful music. IMO, I prefer the Ar series over the Atelier games.

Oh interesting. So when they say "city", is it a main hub for the game, or do you go to different towns and walk around?

There are different towns to walk around. Maybe if it helps, check out the livestream this thursday. There should be Let play videos of the japanese version too. Or hell, look up anything on Ar Tonelico 1/2/3.

I'll have to do that, thanks! I love the Atelier Alchemy games, so this seems like it'd be right up my alley.

I want to play, but that vita version, ehh. I'll probably wait for it.

I'm sure it's not coming if that is what everyone thinking.

I don't think you should jump onto this game without basic knowledge of world setting, but that requires a huge reading or at least experience with Ar tonelico. You could enjoy it, but there will be a lot of thing go over your head in the game.

I should mention, fanservice is a little more prevalent in the previous titles, but it's actually not too bad here. Most of it is tucked away in the "optional" stuff. Although, it's not really optional as you probably need stronger magic to progress further. The crafting is a little more on the lighter side, but it definitely has roots from the Atelier series.

How familiar with the Ar Tonelico games do I need to be for this? I was holding off on getting the PS2 games in hopes of an HD collection but that never happened.

If they end up localizing the Vita versions of this and Ciel nosurge then I'll most likely want to check them out.

It's nice but not needed. Lots of little nods. What's actually really essential at least for this title is Ciel nosurge. It's basically required reading. But I don't think Ciel will ever make it over here due to the genre of the title. MAYBE if this release does well. So support up folks.

Also, here's the Ar Tonelico/Surge Concerto wiki: http://artonelico.wikia.com/wiki/The_EXA_PICO_Universe_Wiki
Seriously a GIGANTIC worldview. It has it's own language even!

Here's a summary of Ciel folks can catch up on prior to release:
http://pastebin.com/egW4rhTK

I seriously recommend reading this. As I quote from text itself:
You might hear someone say that you don't need to know anything about Ciel to be able to fully enjoy Ar. This is a lie. Ar nosurge is a direct sequel to Ciel nosurge, the character cast in Ar nosurge is 90% returning characters from Ciel. The events and character building that happens in Ciel are incredibly important to understand what is happening in Ar and to care about the characters. Things WILL be confusing and major plot points WILL be lost on you if you play Ar without knowing anything about Ciel.

Hearing stuff like this excites me :).

I've only played Ar Tonelico 3 (and enjoyed it) but I am very much looking forward to this. Everything I've seen about it is great!

Well, if you played AT3, this is 10x better. And seriously, Ar Tonelico/nosurge was that Gust's sound director (Akira Tsuchiya) asked himself, if we turned Atelier into a traditional RPG, what would it be like? But let's add awesome music and really indepth character development and massive worldview.

As someone who thinks that AT Qoga is one of the worst jRPGs ever, I have a hard time getting interested in Ar nosurge although I'd like to.

That and the fanservice. I get that there's less of that in Ar Nosurge yet judging from the footage its still too much. I just loathe this stuff since the game apparently wants me to take it serious unlike that Neptunia ish.

D: Did you ever play Ar Tonelico 1/2? They just went overboard and failed mechanically in 3/Qoga. Although the writing was solid and music was still triple AAA

Also for folks that are new to the Ar series, here's a WONDERFUL article on it: http://www.usgamer.net/articles/i-shall-give-you-endless-earth-an-ar-tonelico-retrospective

Please don't judge the whole series with Qoga. That's the worst one possible because of the transition from PS2 to PS3.

Ar tonelico has one of the best world setting and story in JRPG in my book. That and the best OST.

Yeah, if you ever check out the interviews with the series producer, Akira Tsuchiya. This man singlehandley created this immense worldview spanning across only 3 games formerly.

http://artonelico.wikia.com/wiki/Akira_Tsuchiya

In 2000, he pitched to the company the idea of creating a classic-styled fantasy RPG based from a tabletop RPG setting he made to play alongside his friends during his college days and gave to it the name Ar tonelico. However, the game was vetoed by Kazushige Masuda, who would later on be appointed as the director of the Atelier Iris subseries. Masuda told Tsuchiya that the game wouldn't garner much interest from the players due to the excessive focus it had on magic, as well as the extreme degree of difficulty it had because the spells depended on a complex synthesis system for their creation.

Therefore, Tsuchiya returned to his composer duties, though he also lent a hand by giving ideas such as the shop events and shop synthesis systems that were used in Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana, as well as also designing its logo and several other of its aspects. However, he still eagerly wished to make true his dream of making that RPG based on his own original world setting, and he saw his golden chance when Banpresto decided to approach Gust once again after having noticed how their first collaborative effort: Atelier Marie, Elie and Anise - Rumors of the Gentle Breeze, was a moderately successful game.

With this, Tsuchiya began maturing the idea for the game, and restructured the setting by making several large-scale changes to it, the greatest of them being the addition of the Reyvateil and Cosmosphere concepts. The latter one was completed with the collaboration of producer Atsunori Kawachi, who provided him with several tips, ideas and concepts gained from his experience on Banpresto, and it was through this clashing and harmonizing of ideas that Ar tonelico took its current form. He also was the main creator of the Hymmnos language used in said games, as well as its other versions, the New Testament of Pastalie, Carmena Foreluna and Ar Ciela. Aside of his work on the game setting and the games themselves, he was also quite attentive to the players and fans during the life time of the series, and served as one of its main PR outlets, being the creator of the Ar Portal official fansite, its Supporters' System and all of their related features, being one of the main writters and supervisor of the Toukousphere, and being the writter of pretty much all of the columns that appeared in the Ar Portal.

Is that really true? All the singer/revetail (or whatever their in-world term is) sections where you configure various aspects seem super fan-service-y. Basically, the screenshot in the OP with the "ARM" display. These are optional? Because I thought they were character setup screens, which seem like a fundamental part of any RPG.

Well the purification/bath scenes are essential(but that's nothing compared to whats in genometrics), but you could skip genometrics(Where most of the fanservice is now), which I don't recommend as it's massive character development.

If you don't mind more indepth reading, this is a good write up on Ciel nosurge. I've been slowly working my way through it- it includes screenshots and some videos in important places
(like that scene at the end of chp 1 which I'd def recommend watching)
.

I might see if I can put this on my iPad or something so I can read this when bored in a few weeks. Traveling down south to London for EGX, will be away when Ar nosurge arrives so it's a good opportunity to read this during travel/when I have nothing else to do lol.

You're probably not going to like this game (or any of the Ar Tonelico games) if you don't like fanservice.

Yeah as some folks said, if you're really adverse to fanservice, you probably shouldn't bother then. . .But really this isn't as in your face as Ar Tonelico Qoga was.

I wouldn't agree with that. I think fanservice crap is stupid, but it's not super prevalent in AT1. It's a bit more there in 2 but not so bad. I don't know what it's like in this game, but if it's at all comparable to AT1 and 2 then it shouldn't be an issue for most people either. The worst it ever really got in AT1, for example, was that silly scene where they talk about inserting crystals and it's full of innuendo and "IT'S OKAY IF IT'S YOU"

Regarding the fanservice, the producer explains himself the importance of it. Again most of it is in the Genometrics, which represents characters inner self. Posted this awhile ago: http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2014/07/interview-mind-behind-ar-nosurge-part-1.html

What was most fascinating for me was when I asked Tsuchiya if he was concerned that a game such as Ar nosurge will attract similar crticisms from some media outlet circles in the west for the way it handles sexuality. At tonelico games were dismissed and aggressively criticised in some circles for being "exploitative" if not "perverted" in some outlets. For instance, in writing about the third game in the series, on RPGamer: "The only thing that RPGamers should be concerned with is feeling like perverts every time they pick up the controller," and PlayUK wrote: "feels like a glance into the mind of a perverted otaku, and little more." [Issue#203, p.94].

I've always been interested in hearing what the developers behind these "perverted" games have to say about the critical reception they get, because typically I don't agree with the assumptions that the aforementioned critics make. The presence of sexalised content within a game is not a marker for perversion. The most famous example of that is, of course, Lollipop Chainsaw, a game widely derided for being exploitative which, for people that took the time to understand the game, is quickly evident of being the exact opposite of exploitative.

So I put the question to Tsuchiya, and his response was brilliant: "Is this criticism from someone who has played the game?" he said. "In Ar nosurge there are elements like this (what we saw in Ar tonelico). But it is necessary in order to show the growing bond between the main character and heroine. I think this is something that the people who actually play the game will understand.

"In order to show the true heart of the heroine, we had to show the real relationships – from friendship to sexual relations - between male and females; otherwise characters would just be symbolic and fake."

Good on Tsuchiya for calling out the fact that many critics fail to analyse sexuality in games with any degree of competence or depth, I say.

I personally like it, but some people seem to be super-sensitive to it so I can't really see them liking the series if it's off-putting to them. As you said, there's really not as much in the first game, but 2 and Qoga have a good deal more. I haven't actually played this one myself yet but I've watched a good amount of videos of the Japanese version, and while it seems like there's less fanservice than Qoga had, it's still definitely there.

Can't WAIT for this game :)

I'm a huge fan of the Ar Tonelico games, and pretty much all of Gust's output. They are the last true beacon of light when it comes to JRPGs imo, their games still take me back to the golden era (SNES/PS1)

Qoga was just the biggest offender, what with the stripping mechanic and all. And just being an awful game in general. . . Left a really bad taste in most folks mouths. On the other hand, folks that did enjoy AT2, I really recommend them checking Ar nosurge out. As this is equal to AT2 if not better.

Wow I didn't know this existed, I'll add this to the OT when it opens back up! Actually, I'll go and read this too!

Luckily, I just happened to stumble upon it while looking for the other summary again one day. It's a really good read.

On the subject of fanservice and what not- I haven't played Qoga as that just seems like too much (though I'm wanting to give it a try at some point just to see how bad it is), but I really enjoyed AT1/2 despite the fanservice (and I am not a fan of that kind of stuff at all). I get that some people won't like it and that's completely understandable, but I do think the games are enjoyable enough to give a try if you are able to overlook that.

If you are a fan of the series, you should at least try to play/finish Qoga, as there is a payoff for veterans. Or look for a let's play/playthrough on the Youtube. I mean musically and storywise, it's really solid, just everything else falls flat on its face so hard. . .

To those that like the series

What is it that makes Ar tonelico 2 (which apparently is the game where the series peaked) so good? Plot? Characters? (And please elaborate why if possible...sell me on these games)

Honestly Qoga is so bad in every aspect I have a hard time imagining that this team is capable of crafting a fine game. The game has like no redeeming qualities at all except for the music and I found that one to be pretty eh.

AT2 has a really, really neat battle system, and that was the primary draw for me. Really enjoyed actually playing the game.

Ah, but here's where the "but" comes into play. Ar Tonelico II is also, unequivocally, one of the best PlayStation 2 RPGs on the system. In fact, it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played. Mull that over for a second: a game, featuring scenes and situations that I was loathe to expose anyone who knew me to, is also something that I'll recommend to anyone who was a fan of the old 16- and 32-bit RPGs of yore. This is a labor of love, a downright gushing tribute to the kind of RPGs that were previous generations' bread and butter, but it's not entirely resistant to adding in a few new things here and there.

By far, though, the standout part of Ar Tonelico II's presentation is its music, which may well be the most impressive collection of tunes I've heard in a game since Chrono Cross. Ranging from a languid harmonica-driven town theme to a smattering of techno-industrial aural backdrops, to multiple choir-driven hymns that serve as the foil for almost all of the game's most dramatic moments, the music is wonderful. It's also plentiful, with multiple battle themes present to avoid getting tired of the same tunes. The soundtrack is, across the board, fantastic stuff, and if you pick up a copy of the game now, you'll get an art book and a soundtrack CD included.
Also see the Ar Tonelico 2 section of this article:
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/i-shall-give-you-endless-earth-an-ar-tonelico-retrospective
Also noteworthy in Ar Tonelico II is the excellent battle system. In sharp contrast to the first game's relatively conventional turn-based system, Ar Tonelico II makes use of a "phased" system whereby battles alternate between the player's party attacking for a set period of time, then the enemies get to do the same. While you're attacking, various button combinations cause your front-line fighters to unleash special moves which in turn impact the Reyvateils' "emotions" and how effective their Song Magic will be; while you're defending, the front-line fighters must defend the back-row Reyvateils by tapping buttons in time with a rhythm game-style indicator. It's a system that takes some getting used to, particularly if you're used to more conventional JRPG combat mechanics, but once you get the hang of it it's immensely satisfying and a lot of fun -- the only issues with it are a somewhat juddery frame rate at times and a boss battle near the end of the game that causes a game-breaking crash if you don't complete it quickly enough. This latter issue was fixed in the European release of the game, incidentally.
Unlike the Cosmosphere, into which Croix dives and deals with one of the girls at a time, the Infelsphere focuses on the relationship between the two girls and how they feel about one another. To say too much about this part would give away a considerable amount of the plot -- and I'm trying to convince you to play these games for yourself, here! -- but suffice to say that it's handled well, much like the Cosmospheres, and it's interesting to see a non-romantic, non-sexual relationship explored in the same manner as the (potentially) romantic relationship between the protagonist and his partner.
If you only play one game in the series, this is the one to go for. However, it's well worth playing this one after the first one, for reasons that are far too spoilerish to go into here. Just trust me on this one, and know that if -- and only if -- you have played the first one, Melody of Metafalica features a "revelation" easily on par with "that moment" in Knights of the Old Republic.

For myself? I seriously consider Ar Tonelico 2 as the best RPG of the PlayStation 2 era. The battle system was a huge step up with it's own unique take. The story takes a darker turn, while also exploring venues no other RPG dare takes. The music was probably at it's best too. I really would think it's all of the above. I loved all of the characters, the heroines in this entry especially. I mean I don't think I could go too much into it without going into spoiler territory. I've never had feelings or goosebumps onpar with the moments I've had with Ar Tonelico 2.

I mean, having this as the backdrop during battle is all too good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OBrWYWurU0

Wow I didn't know this existed, I'll add this to the OT when it opens back up! Actually, I'll go and read this too!

But you already linked it in your OT. It's in the pastebin.

I mean, I even commended you on linking to it. :D

The game has like no redeeming qualities at all except for the music and I found that one to be pretty eh.

I'm not sure why would you bother with this series, honestly.

I already said, the problem came from the transition from PS2 to PS3. They faced many technical problems that its performance is utter shit, and the localization while isn't as bad as At2, it's still on the level of unbearable unless you choose to play the game in Japanese dub and understand what they are saying. There is a reason that a retranslation project for At2 exist for over 3 years and they are just wrapping it up recently.

I myself would rank Ar tonelico franchise above Persona, but yeah, opinion and such.

This female design is tripping me out:

artonelicox3szu.jpg

Like I can tell after some peering what her shape really is, but she's like an optical illusion. I keep thinking she's like a drink that had all the water sucked out of her she's so thin lol

I don't know if I'd characterize myself as super averse to fan service. I'm a big fan of the Atelier games, which have some fan service but it's not particularly heavy or anything. And that "infamous" scene I saw from AT1 was really just goofy innuendo to me, so it's not like the series definitely wouldn't appeal.

I guess I'm just trying to get an idea of how much of the game do you spend looking at gratuitous shots of half-naked women. If it makes up a relatively small portion of the total playtime, I'm sure I could get over it. This might all be premature though, since I haven't even played my copies of AT2 or Qoga yet...

Oh, as an aside, how much will I miss by not playing AT1? I decided not to buy it when I bought AT2 and it turns out the game is stupid expensive nowadays so I'd rather not have to shell out $100 if I can avoid it.

Really looking forward to getting my copy.

Can't WAIT for this game :)

Holy shit, I love SOME of the character design in this. That robot thing is stunning.

I just don't get the dancing when synthesizing, but I might even try this, just becuase of the robot.

How many girls in bikinis are there? Cus that shit puts me right off.

Well. . . The tiein in Surge is primarily from AT1. The basis and foundation. The amount of emotion people experienced when it finally happened can only be from folks that played AT1. It's not required as I said, but it's pretty damn nice.

Well just mainly the purification and bathing. I guess there's Nay there too. There's also some questionable scenes but thats the extent of it. If you could tolerate the fanservice in AT1/2, this is basically the same amount.

If you are a fan of the series, you should at least try to play/finish Qoga, as there is a payoff for veterans. Or look for a let's play/playthrough on the Youtube. I mean musically and storywise, it's really solid, just everything else falls flat on its face so hard. . .

I was wanting to try to get through it before Ar nosurge comes out, but I've been really busy with work so I don't think it'll happen. I'll def have to give it a try at least at some point. You can turn off the stripping scenes in battle, can't you? I think I saw a video before where it kind of skipped over that part. That'd probably help some if so.
