This game's approach to storytelling is so fucking incomprehensible and bizarre. I honestly can't even tell what they were going for.

There are things about the story I like.

The mood feels right, this kinda fantasy/sci-fi mashup of half-buried ancient structures poking out of the ground and idea tech so advanced it's basically magic. But these are also ideas that Halo did as well or even better than Destiny.

The real thing it's missing is any clear villain or goal. "Push back the Darkness" is about as vague as you can get, especially when "The Darkness" is a bunch of different alien species that don't appear to be working together.

I this this lack of direction hurts this game way worse than TitanFall, if only because Destiny has a very strong PvE bend to it. TitanFall could kinda hand-wave away the story as not important, but when Destiny takes so much time up with cutscenes and story stuff these shortcomings become harder to ignore.

Ha! I did the exact same thing and I had the exact same reaction. I was like "When does this game get small?"

I think it helps me at least to not use my sparrow much. I like just walking' around, breathing (i guess idk) it all in. It's all just so damn gorgeous.

I've only been to the Earth and Moon but it struck me, "Oh, there's no day night cycle, here, oh, BECAUSE THERE'S NO ATMOSPHERE." Like, how amazing is that, that a game created such a vivid, well designed world where I realized that.

Moon does have a day/night cycle, and its beautiful to watch. Not technically accurate but beautiful nonetheless.

Alright people, you have choose one or the other, but not both.
You can have:

A) Marty back
B) Audio adjustments in Destiny 2.

Choose wisely :)

This game was in dev way before Dark Souls came out and became huge, why does everyone keep saying that about the story? Bungie tried to flesh out a story once, in Halo 2, and people bitched endlessly. Since then, they've relied on Terminals & Website cards to flesh out their games. Not saying it's the correct way, I just don't get the DS comparison given the timeline.

Yo. Why are there are no characters in Destiny?

There are NPCs and talking heads in cutscenes but there are no characters. There's the queen lady, her brother, and the Ghost. That's it. Everyone else is either a shop owner or someone who gives you missions. Bungie brought in a ton of great VA talent (Nathan Fillion, Kieth David), and all they do is spew vacant, foreboding nonsense about the Darkness or tell you to go shoot guys.

I really like Destiny, but this is one thing I cannot understand. How can you create such a rich world to tell stories in, and subsequently fail to tell any story? It's not that the characters are bad, or that the plot is bad, it's that neither exist, or are merely threadbare. This is unacceptable coming from the company that made Halo, especially after ODST and Reach. What were they going for?

I get the sense it might have been their attempt at emulating Dark Souls' minimalist presentation, but it doesn't work here.

Yeah the writing is total garbage compared to Halo. Not that Halo was great, but it was far above most games, the Arbiter dialogue in Halo 2 especially.

It seems like Joe Staten just created the initial lore and left the rest to some amateur writers.

This song is probably why Marty left Bungie

Wait, Paul sings in the game too? So awesome, love Paul and the Beatles.

halo 2's dialog was iconic. every line in that game is quotable.

Is there a way to get to other planets without doing any story missions?

If cutscenes were skippable, I wouldn't be asking this lol
Don't think you can skip sit scenes, for that matter I haven't been able to skip a cutscenes in any current gen game. It's ridiculous you've got to sit through cutscenes over and over.

Why is Bungie.net built into Destiny so oddly?

I can't see other players stats on PS4 if they are offline, can't read the Grimoire cards that would help to be available in game to aid in the storytelling, and so much more. Really odd.

It is in the background but it should be available upfront.

Bungie tried to flesh out a story once, in Halo 2, and people bitched endlessly.

Bungie was a bit too far ahead of their time here, especially on consoles. Exposition and dialogue heavy shooter games were nonexistant on consoles in 2004. The majority Halo 2's audience was being under 18 didn't help matters.

Halo 2's story would have been far better received today.

Are any of the Warlock chest armor pieces shorter when at a higher level? I really dislike the trench cape look, just hideous. Seems like everything that I get now though that's decent in stats is just that, and not the shorter ones.

My two cents...

The game is extremely flawed, with the only major saving grace being that the moment to moment shooter gameplay is solid. Unfortunately for Destiny the Halo MCC isn't far away, offering a much better package. My two major concerns are :

It's a slow, slow grind with not much reward. The constant feedback loop is missing. I put in about two hours last night - day two - and didn't get a single upgrade. Not sure I can be bothered to mindlessly grind to 20 if this is the what I'm supposed to be enjoying.

The universe is simply not fleshed out in the game, making it a "follow the marker" exercise only. I don't care what I'm doing our why is important. The reality is it's not important - is the "kill ten boars for their hides" with abstract meaningless language to try and hide this. This is so disappointing from the company that have us Halo and Marathon.

Will keep trying to see if it improves but I I'm very tempted to go back to Diablo for the weekend. It's simply more fun, and has the feedback loop nailed that Destiny just missed. I hope they manage to patch in some soul to the game. I bought the digital CE in Australia - $129, or about $USD140-150. I should know better than to follow the GAF hope train. Ugh.

I get the feeling that the more people approach it like an mmo and all its trappings, then, people will enjoy it more. They will work towards endgame content and gravitate to the social stuff vs approaching it like a linear story shootbang.

The greatest fault at that point is that there aren't a whole lot of tools to be social.

Do you guys think any outlets will be brave enough to give it a 6.5-8.0 score like a lot of people here are feeling it deserves?

Some people such as myself don't like cutscenes in games and just want to play.

Yeah if I was approaching this as a usual console game I'd be pissed, but from an MMO approach it's faaaar more acceptable. That said it's still utterly devoid of any narrative.

Blind Watch is still incredibly broken as a map, I'm surprised they didn't mess around with it given it was obvious in the alpha/beta that if you hold the C point it's pretty much game won with B being so close. I like it as a map, but the map rotation isn't very good and I just had that same map 5 times on the run.

Usually, Bungie is pretty good at listening to the community after their betas conclude. This time though, it's like all the feedback from the Destiny beta was all for not and it was merely used as a means to test their servers over anything else. I'm sure it'll receive a patch eventually, but it's still rather unfortunate. I suppose I should have figured this would be the case given how late in development the beta was held.

I'm joking. I was pointing out how funny it was you said you'll get your level 2 Hunter's Sunwhatever class leveled up lol. I thought you were joking yourself.

lol yeah I was like "which is it" but I'm legit curious, for three characters of different classes, if one of them unlocks their second subclass, does it also open the second subclass for other characters with different classes who are under level 15?

As an aside, trophy rarity is interesting in early days like this. For example:

Kill 100 Hunters in PvP - 1.46%
Kill 100 Warlocks in PvP - 1.4%
Kill 100 Titans in PvP - 0.73%

Now, are more people picking Hunters and Warlocks over Titans (I picked Hunter, as in every other RPG), or do Titans have the competitive edge over the other 2 in PvP, and need to be nerfed (in the future)?

I checked those trophies last night and the numbers were these
0.5 Hunters
0.1 Titans
Can't remember warlocks but it was something in between
I think it has to do with the fact that there are WAY more hunters/warlocks than titans
(at least for what I've seen)

I'm a level 16 warlock who hasn't even left the moon yet, and I saw that I unlocked the vanguard playlist, tried it out and ended up on the Venus Strike HOLY HELL that final boss is one tough sonofabitch Took us 45 minutes to finally give up lol.

I'm loving the difficulty though, I hope they don't nerf the boss battles, they SHOULD be tough.

Good. The bad is there, but I am waiting to see what I think a week from now considering I'm already close to endgame after playing for a whole day casually.

Really?? I thought this game was much much longer since its like a MMO? Or am I misunderstanding? Or the longevity is just doing same things again and again for more loot and XP?

preach :D

My friend and I did the first story mission on the moon. Then we immediately went into Patrol. We spent TWO HOURS running around the moon, checking stuff out, fighting enemies, doing patrol missions, finding dead ghosts and golden chests, doing public events and ultimately found out the moon goes a LOT deeper than we thought. A LOOOOOOOOT deeper. After more than two hours we still have not seen every area of the moon.

This game is utterly utterly awesome.

This is very exciting to read. I've only done the first story mission on the moon, even that was pretty awesome. I think it's just the environments. Can't wait to get further

Yeah, wait what. I played for about 9 hours over the last two days and I'm only level 15, and that's just barely.

The latter, which is improved by hanging out with friends. When you distill it like that, it does sound kinda bad lol

PvE kind of bores me, but PvP is freakin awesome. My fav mod so far is Skirmish, after that comes Rumble and Clash.

Would love to see a Theater mode later on as a DLC or a patch. Some of the matches I've played were damn good fun, but video recording is kind of, strange.

How do I get Vanguard marks? You get points for the bounties but they don't seem to be the same as marks. What do I even do with points?

That's Vanguard rank Xp. It increases your rank. You can earn vanguard marks once you are lvl 18+. I think by doing heroics? Not sure.

I remember reading that bungie themselves admitted they were inspired by dark souls "less is more" beliefs. I think the problem is the Dark souls approach in story telling isnt something g that would work well for a game your trying to make as the next "big one" so thry tried to hsve it both ways abd mix in there halo approach with a, and im being very passive about it, DS style.

I really hope there's some brave enough to call out all the features the game is missing that could easily bring this up to a 9.5, right now for me it's hovering around 8-8.5. There's just so much shit missing that we've had in games for 10+ years that could benefit Destiny in a big way imo

I think I'm going to give PvP a try later. I went into this game hoping for some great PvE content, but I'm finding it to be quite lackluster (at least when solo). I need to find some time to try group stuff, too.

Is it even worth doing PvP before you hit the cap?

I think it's something like 150 points to get 1 mark. I could be wrong, just a guess, when you hover over the Vanguard logo thing it will say 40/150 or how many points you've got.
