Apple announces Apple Watch

I'm kind of interested, but I'm unsure of Apple's build quality when it comes to making their devices durable without third party solutions.

Is this something that's going to crack? Is it a luxury item that's attempting to appeal to a mass market? Are Ewatches useful?

Let me explain my disdain.

I understand the smart-watch will take time (pun intended) to find its feet. The potential is there, but in regards to this as a new product category I just...don't get it.

If a device requires another device to function properly, and struggles to do so (battery life, navigation)...what purpose does it serve?

Smart-phones and tablets are so popular because they have taken functions that traditionally would have been done on a PC/Laptop and improved them (portability, ease of use).

The smart-watch however is merely replicating functions that are better served on a smart-phone, the very thing it is tethered too. It's effectively a second screen.

Consider all the smart-phones that have been sold over the last five years, at what point did we start saying 'you know what, using this thing is such a hassle...I'd love something on my wrist that could do this'?

And even if that question has been asked, does the Apple Watch answer it? No.

From a company like Apple whom with the iPod and iPad have utterly destroyed the competition...this take on a smart-watch is piss poor. I have no doubt later revisions will be much more compelling, but to think this will sell millions when it's clearly half-baked...annoys me no end.

"Why would I want an iPad, my Netbook does everything better and is cheaper!!"

Would be amazing if Apple or Google have made a watch that uses life force as power. Just imagine you almost dead, but your smart watch keep working.

It seems obvious to me that a watch is a much better interface for things like checking the time, reading a text or an email, controlling iTunes, etc, compared to a cell phone.

I actually felt like the iPad was a pointless device, it kickstarted a market that no one seemed to be asking for in the first place. Smart watches are just watches that can do more, it's not a wholly new market, it's a subset of the already substantial watch market.

It's the first real step in wearable computing, but it's still a watch at its core. It selling millions wouldn't be sad to me at all. If people see a use case for it, and Apple ship a nice device, hoping it fails seems absurd to me.

Wish it wasn't $349 tho
This is an important element, personally paying upwards of a grand is fine for a watch that just tells the time, so I don't see it as expensive, but I think the concept of even wearing a watch is going to be foreign to many of the iPhone users, so paying a lot for it won't happen.

I liked the idea of seeing them produce a really cheap plastic model for people not wanting to spend so much on the hope of it being of value to them.

The more I watch videos of this the more i want it.

But fucking iphone required.

I'm not going back to the iPhone just so I can use the apple watch.

The iPhone requirement seems dumb at first, but it would have to be the case if you want to have access to an LTE network.

Other than that, it looks like Apple has another winner on their hands here.

This will spawn a bunch of imitators just like the ipod, iphone and ipad.

I reckon the price is fine, my biggest concern is having a watch with a one-year replacement cycle.

Can't exactly hand down an OG Apple Watch to the kid either, it'll be some seriously out of date, dead battery, defunct tech in a decade or so.

Does this have flash memory inside? Can I put a bunch of songs on it? Does it do a lot when my phone isn't also in my pocket?

If the ipod shuffle made into a watch turns out to have more untethered capabilities on its own than the Apple Watch which seems to need a phone for pretty much everything, that's going to be disappointing.

Does it even have a headphone jack?

I doubt its untethered capabilities is more than telling time.

During the event, Kevin Lynch, while explaining the music controls in Glances, mentioned songs ON the Apple Watch, so I think so.

While I do wear a watch and think the Apple Pay, map directions, and Health functionality of the Apple Watch look like the best yet, I certainly won't buy first gen. Just looks a bit big, plain, and is very pricey. I'll wait till the first hardware design change at the very least.

There's a cool screenshot analysis from ArsTechnica comparing Apple Watch's OS and Android Wear. It truly shows the difference in main focuses between the systems.

Wow, that's quite... the jarring comparison. And really highlights that there was a need for the Apple Watch, if only to make a smart watch seem like a reasonably functional device. That Google Wear UI boggles my mind, were they not even trying?

yeah, I mean we see yet again why Android somehow does things way sooner and is still somehow so forgettable that Apple swoops in with the right way and wins the recognition, and then competition starts after.

my mind is full of fuck if these aren't a joke.

If i took those screenshots two weeks ago and labeled them Samsung, they would get laughed out of every website around. They are ugly as sin and straight up piss poor from the icons, to the font to the information density.

Seriously, its a tiny screen that you aren't going to hold an inch from your face, there needs to be a happy medium, there is dead space in google watch that could be used sure, but thats just ridiculous.

if you told me this was fan made by a 7 year old blind kid with WordArt, i'd believe you more then i would believe this is an actual shipping screenshot from an Apple device.

ffs ... it has a GALLERY app. A gallery app... on a watch...

You know there are videos showing off the watch OS that pretty much go against everything quoted here. Seems like a good looking, simple, easy to read OS suited well for a small screen watch to me.

I don't know if you heard in the conference but Jony Ive apparently consulted with Chronos, Lord of Time, to design the Apple Watch. I think he knows what he's doing.

Here's the thing. A 350$ watch will last you many years, a 1k$ watch? Possibly a lifetime. The apple watch on the other hand will be obsolete after 2 years. So in that sense paying 350$ for it is quite expensive , especially since you need an iPhone for it to even work.

There's a few features I'd definitely be interested in.. but in the end this is simply a $349 iPhone accessory. I have no problem spending that kind of money on a high quality watch that will last 50+ years.. but we all know the apple watch will only last 2-3 years until the next best thing comes along.

I'm still tempted to buy one lol.

Bingo. Why do it on your phone when you can do it on your wrist?

Apple: "Because money!"

Apple is essentially selling an old device and calling it new. Perhaps if there was a complete focus on timepiece functionality, this would make a lot more sense. Not everything has to text.

Or maybe Apple has this vision where they're seeking to REPLACE the smart phone with smart watches. Maybe this is just a test to see how well-received these devices are because they hope to phase out iPhones and completely change the landscape when it comes to mobile telecommunications technology. They did it with touchscreens so maybe they're trying to do it with smart watches.

If not, then congrats to Apple for successfully reselling an old device.

I want to be able to have Dick Tracy style phone conversations through my watch, when that day comes, I'll buy the iWatch.

"Why would I want an iPad, my Netbook does everything better and is cheaper!!"

Yes, because your iPad is tethered to your Netbook.

Wait what? (Jokes aside I'm actually not even sure what you're trying to say here.)

That was the most hilarious part of the video.

"We have worked closely with horological experts from around the world to help us understand the cultural and historical significance of time-keeping. And this has profoundly informed our design."

Yup its a clock.

A watch is the worst interface for reading an email. I dont' want to be scrolling and staring a t a tiny screen trying to read a long ass email I've received.

ffs ... it has a GALLERY app. A gallery app... on a watch...
And Maps...

Thank you for posting these comparison images. 101% agree.
That's atrociously bad.
And most of all it goes completely against the Human Interface design guidelines that make iOS 7+ and Yosemite shine.

Wear is perfectly in line with Material Design.

Except that's still a pretty poor argument.

How cluttered is that?
Jesus Christ.

I think building in GPS would be challenging for battery life and size. A compromise might be to support external GPS via Bluetooth. You used to be able to do that with PDAs. Set your route via the phone before you leave, clip I a small GPS receiver to your arm and the watch will track your progress.

Well based on those shots from ars, I'm amazed at how awful the apple one is and how much I prefer the Google one.

my mind is full of fuck if these aren't a joke.

If i took those screenshots two weeks ago and labeled them Samsung, they would get laughed out of every website around.
And yet I would still see it as more user-friendly and intuitive than Google Wear.
It was less a comment on Apple doing it right and more of a comment on Google doing it so badly.
Having to scroll through playback controls? REALLY?!

Sheesh, marketing nowadays. What does that even mean anyway? 'We asked a bunch of watchmakers how to make a watch.' ?

Agreed 100%.

You gotta assume they think the black background improves visibility. There has to be a reason since they've been all about white space in both iOS and OSX in the last couple of years.

Not too keen on the typography though.

Apple spent three years developing the watch. I don't think they would have spent all that time on it if it wasn't the best design possible.

;P

I can't believe this bullshit line is still peddled around.

That website focuses on mechanical watches. Mechanical watch tradition is mostly round.

Digital watch tradition on the other hand, has a rich history of rectangular and square watches. Some of the most popular digitals ever are rectangular/square. The watch that launched the g-shock line had a friggin irregular octagonal watchface.

... ?! You just reemphasized my point. The writer is a guy who loves big mechanical round watches with bright intricate displays not square/rectangular digital watches with dark dank displays. It's just weird to see someone with his taste consider this thick square AppleWatch as beautiful

The writer knows about watches and is not attempting to pick a side in the google-apple wars so he doesn't give a fuck wether it's round or squared.
Well besides the fact that Apple PR chose him to attend the event and provide such access, he also writes stuff like this:
The average well-to-do person buys an iPhone 6 because it's the absolute best offering in the category in both form and function.
Pretty obvious that he's already picked a side

Have they said whether the screen is LCD or OLED?
The use of so much black in the UI makes me think it's oled. The display is my biggest problem with the looks.

The Sony SmartWatch 3 is about the same size, has integrated GPS, and has an alleged battery life of 2-5 days.

Now, I guarantee that number is a "reach" number while it's connected to a phone and utilizing the phone's navigation functions, but even while functioning as a standalone device, they probably could have gotten the Watch to at least last as long as the Motoactv (9 hrs. outdoors). But I'm not going to attempt to get inside an Apple product engineer's head.

Why does he need to apply aesthetic standards for mechanical watches to the apple watch at all? He clearly is not absolutionist when it comes to that, and even states 'I’m not even sure we can call it a watch'.

I enjoy and collect watches, and I can see the aesthetic appeal of this device. I don't agree it's beautiful and I wouldn't buy one myself, but as a piece of design in isolation it's a very good looking thing.

"Why would I want an iPad, my Netbook does everything better and is cheaper!!"

The benefits of a tablet over a netbook are very obvious; battery life and portability.

As someone working in IT who has seen the rise and fall of netbooks, I've never used one I thought that was either a good laptop replacement nor something I'd use over a tablet.

And in this context, neither device requires the other to function.

That seems to fit the circular ui of the home screen more than the square watch face.

Yep. And with Apple's control over hardware and software it would be much easier to roll out UI which works perfectly on round faces, unlike with Android Wear where they'd have to have an OS which would need to work on both square and circular screens.

The renders are obviously overly simplified but by adding the lugs to the top and the bottom, it would be trivial to have the same mechanism for swapping of the straps.

Apple PR chose him[/URL] to attend the event and provide such access, he also writes stuff like this:
The average well-to-do person buys an iPhone 6 because it's the absolute best offering in the category in both form and function.

Apple PR also invites to their events journos that review android phones as better than iPhones. The premise that Apple's PR only invites those who're gonna glowingly praise their products is flawed.

And someone who is aware of horological history and tradition wouldn't give a rats ass wether a watch is round or square. Only fanboys picking sides in a war tho. I think it is very telling that you believe his opinion to be tainted because he helds the iPhone in high regard. "Oh, someone likes the iPhone... he must be an indoctrinated sheeple or a for-sale celebrity!"

The agenda-driven posting in this thread is disgusting.
