Destiny - Review Thread

All you did in AC1 was collect flags and occasionally assassinate someone. It was a tech demo for the parkour mechanics. Shallow and lacking is the perfect way to describe that game.

And yet it's still the most interesting Assassins Creed from an assassination point of view. Instead of expanding upon this and making the assassinations in the sequel more open/better Ubisoft just decided to make everyone fill more bars. FUN!

There are some fair criticisms being pointed out for sure, and maybe my use of the word "hate" was a strong one, but that was the quick impression I had.
The thing is that this is a review thread. That means a large part of the talk is the criticism and what of it is valid and what isn't. If you like the game it can sometimes (I'm not blaming you for that nor am I saying it's something to blame for in general as it can happen very easily) seem that when people are talking about criticism, they're hating the game even if they don't mean it at all. Especially if you do a quick check up only.

That said, yes certainly at times there might be some hyperboles even, but that happens for every game and it happens on both directions.

What's the worse game, Watch Dogs or Destiny?

I'll have to go with Watch Dogs. I own them both, but if I had to choose which game is worse of the two, I'm going with WD.

The reasoning is simple:

Watch Dogs is a third person shooter with emphasis on driving and shooting. Unfortunately for Watch Dogs, the driving and shooting mechanics just aren't that great.

Destiny is a First Person shooter (one of my least favorite genres, to be honest), with an emphasis on the shooting, bounties, PVP, and special events, etc. Fortunately for Destiny, it's gunplay is highly enjoyable, and all those other aspects (bounties, pvp, special events, etc), are polished and work well. It's lacking in content, but it's fundamental game loop is solid, and, if you are the type of gamer that really enjoys the game loop that Destiny offers, it's fun.

I'm only about 5 hours into the game, and only level 7, but I've only done two or three story missions, and spent 2 hours last night doing Patrol missions and a few bounties, some by myself, some with a Fireteam, and had a great time. I was never hyped for Destiny, but I thought it looked interesting, and enjoyed the Alpha and Beta. I haven't even touched PVP yet. I've just been having a good time roaming, shooting stuff, getting loot, leveling up my skills, and absorbing the world.

I usually don't do review threads, but I was curious about Destiny, but never expected to see this kind of response to the game, that's for sure. It's interesting.

If, out in the world, enemy spawns were more dynamic, would that significantly improve the game? Because right now that's one of my complaints about the game, enemies always appearing in the same place. If the AI is advanced enough they should be able to drop enemies in just about anywhere and have them behave reasonably well.
I really do wish this game operated more like Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. *Lots* of dynamic encounters and dynamic spawns - a world that always scales to the players so you can play and replay whatever missions or free roam areas you could ever want to, and absolute balancing of party members and loot streams, no matter the level differences.

That would help make the world more dangerous and unpredictable, but the bosses still need major work, and they need to ditch the entire idea of guarding the ghost against waves - it became so much a joke with us that we're positive that the Ghost actually works for the Darkness and is trying to kill the players with every encounter.

You'd be surprised how well that theory conforms to observation.

Not trying to defend the game, but this concern trolling is ridiculous. I never thought I'd see the day where a 7.4/10 is a bad score.

Well, games generally don't get 2/10 on a grand scale. 7.5/10 may as well be 3/10. The qualities needed for 10/10 are probably 100x the difference between 9/10 and 10/10 (or something like that.)

Heh it's interesting to see people come down on The Crucible. PvP is actually my favorite. Leveling also feels less stagnant.

Man, I'll say it again - if they had just made it easier to team up and socialize with people my

PvP is where I'm having the most fun. The story stuff is repetitive as all hell. Fun as a break away from competitive but boring after a few missions

Honestly, I really like Dax and she's typically a joy to talk to, but that kind of stuff just pisses me off. Especially considering:
There's plenty of criticism and problems being pointed out in the OT. Hell, I'm going to write up my thoughts when I feel comfortable, and it'll have plenty of criticism.

Though I agree with you that it was a mistake to look at a few users and apply it to the whole thread. I apologize for that. I just find it kinda aggravating when you have users saying, "I'd hate to see what games you dislike."

Hello.

I've been playing Bungie games since Halo 2. Did the whole MLG thing for Halo 2, played 3, Reach, 4... and have no plans on playing 5.

Let me break down what I think Bungie has created, and why there is so much backlash, disappointment, and confusion.

1) Expectations. People were expecting a story game, maybe a fantasy single-player game with epic build-ups, character development, and cut scenes. I, for one, felt the Reef will play a deeper role later on, and feels kinda tacked on with this first batch of content. People are accustomed to epic single player experiences, expecting a VAST amount of playspace with tons of new content, not retreads. I will cover this point below.

2) Multiplayer. I loved Reach more than any other Halo game. Destiny is an evolution of Reach, and based on what I've seen on NeoGAF, most people don't like Reach. I think there is a select few that states it had the "worst campaign" "unbalanced multiplayer" "bloom" and so on. I will cover this below.

3) Features. Destiny is getting picked on for not having Forge, Custom gametypes, Offline play, and voice chat in the Tower and Open World. I think this is a poor request, and I'll cover this below.

A) The world. Destiny is not meant to be linear. Each mission is episodic, like watching a weekly television sci-fi series. The missions are not supposed to build on each other like people expect, and it's supposed to be designed to jump in and out at any time. This is Epic. For people who wanted a "story" the lore is there, but you cannot focus a story on one character in a Destiny universe, where teamwork and multiple guardians are paramount. The game is designed for CHALLENGES, just like Reach. Once you beat Reach, the campaign, there were daily and weekly challenges, just as Destiny has done, with modifiers, rewards(Cr) and the ability to further rank up, get new armor, and improve your guy.

The game is PVP - based, not an MMO or open world. Saying Destiny is an MMO is like calling Reach an MMO. Destiny is FIREFIGHT, CAMPAIGN, and PVP, all wrapped up into one seamless package. It's truly amazing what they are doing here.

Reach's endgame was playing tons of matchmaking with new playlists, modes, DLC, and earning new armor and commendations. Destiny expands on that ten fold by allowing you to customize your Guardian to a great extent, have awesome stacking abilities that work in any game environment, and again, have a seamless play experience.

Now, for the negative? I disliked the Reef cutscenes. I don't think they added ANYTHING to the story, and felt very forced. I'd have preferred playable space in the Reef, then a cutscene.

B) Multiplayer. Okay, guys. If you hate Reach, you'll hate Destiny. That's all I'm going to say. Currently I'm using a lvl 24 Warlock. Let me tell you some of the attributes I have unlocked. Sticky Grenades, with a faster cooldown, meaning I get more grenades more often. Angel of Light, which allows me to float while ADSing, allowing for extremely tactical jump over your head maneuvers. Revive. I can bring myself back to life when acitvating my Radiant Light, and then run around like a mad man with almost zero 'nade cooldown, torch punches, and stick people left and right. I have customized my guy to throw up to 6-7 grenades per Super. This is awesome.

You think the gameplay is unbalanced? This is probably the most balanced vanilla game I have played. If you're getting killed by shotguns or fusion rifle guys, switch to long-range weapons and pick them off. Titan got a bubble shield? Ignore him. Don't engage. Blade Dancer? Get up into the air, they can't hurt you. You have a game where teamwork builds points, amazing map designs, and they actually balanced out having a custom loadout through using ammo drops. That's an achievement.

C) Features. Okay, please explain to me why you would expect custom games, or forge in Destiny? Custom games - How? They wouldn't allow you to earn XP, weapons, armor, or stats. Why are they necessary? I can understand people wanting to play with and against friends, and maybe they will add the feature later on, but the reality is that the more I played Reach, the less custom games I played. Forge? Screw that. Awful looking set pieces with user created content that makes me wish Bungie just had more DLC. I don't see any point in it. Splitscreen I can bow to, that's an oversight if true.

Let me finish this with a quick rant about those who think 343 will create a better game with Halo 5, or that Bungie did a shitty job on Destiny. Time will tell. I know for a fact that I'm playing this game for a long, long time. Making new characters, doing Raids, and playing the Strike playlists with my buddies. The same way that Reach had daily and weekly challenges and amazing PVP, Destiny will provide the same experience.

I'm biased against 343 simply for the reason that they butchered Reach, eliminated its DLC content, removed playlists and adding the Title Update crap that divided the play experience. I do not trust them as a developer one bit, and I despise the fact that they are making a living off Bungie's past work. Halo 5 will hopefully be better than Halo 4, which I consider the worst Halo game in the series.

Again, this is the evolution of Halo Reach for me. Not an MMO, not a story game. It's amazing PVP and PVE with friends, Challenges, Firefighting and Objective VS.

It is AMAZING.

Excellent post, I'm with you on pretty much everything you said. I was a huge Reach fan, and Destiny has taken everything I loved about that game and made it even better.

One of the worst years in gaming ever:

Watch_Dogs... bland and lackluster.
Titanfall... never quite became the next big thing.
Destiny... overproduced missed opportunity.

Witcher 3, Arkham Knight delayed 2015.

Most anticipated current-gen game is a remake of last year's most anticipated game.

Basically what happened is what we all knew was going on all along with the "We're not giving out review copies ahead of time so that reviewers can play a fully player-populated experience" line.

Bungie knew what was coming review-wise and that sales would be higher if consumers went into it blindly (with a relatively small portion having played the beta, then being promised that there was "so much more").

Yup.

There are some fair criticisms being pointed out for sure, and maybe my use of the word "hate" was a strong one, but that was the quick impression I had.

Just...you really are an amazing person Dax. Just disappointing to see a dismissive post like that from you : (

I've already come up with some names for the Halo MCC Ot

Halo MCC |OT| The best Bungie game of the year.

Not trying to defend the game, but this concern trolling is ridiculous. I never thought I'd see the day where a 7.4/10 is a bad score.

You should try to understand that a normal game getting 74 isn't bad by any means, but when a AAA game like Destiny, a behemoth of this year, gets 74 then there are definitely some problems which need to be addressed.

I'm more interested in Destiny 2 really, I didn't care for the beta but thought it had a solid jumping point. I just feel bad for people that bought into the hype without playing the beta to see if they like it or not. It's apparent as this point the game is very divisive.

I agree with these reviews, or at least the overall scores. Tons of great potential, I hope they can patch over their mistakes and fix the game well ahead of any sequels.

BRB guys, gonna go to all the Dynasty Warriors/Musou threads and tell everyone that they were duped by Tecmo-Koei into buying a bunch of terrible 7/10 games. Maybe it's not too late to save those poor souls from their delusions of enjoyment...

You're completely right. I shouldn't have made that post in such a haste.

This is pretty much how I feel. Never got crazy into Reach but definitely played a whole lot of multiplayer after launch. Been having a shitton of fun with Destiny (up to level 15 now). It really does feel like a natural progression from what they started with Reach.

For me the major downside is the writing - it just seems generally atrocious. It's not Diablo 3 bad but a lot of the dialog just sounds so ridiculous. Despite that, the art design, sound design, and general vibe the game has is incredible and I love it.

It is true, the story integration in the campaign is...not great. So far most of the story is pre / post mission dialog, with little in the way of cutscenes. Maybe that will change. What I don't understand is why the story missions aren't presented in more of a short story sort of way. It seems like some cutscenes here and there would have gone a long way in the story department.

I don't know what people expected from this game. It's great as it is. Setting up you own expectations that's not on the game.

Just read Jeff's GB review. Really liked the last paragraph, it pretty much sums up my complaints with the game as well.

There are cool little flashes of brilliance in Destiny, but a lot of it feels like a game designed by people who weren't sure what sort of game they were designing. Is it a loot shooter? Sort of, but the loot isn't very good. Is it an MMO? No, but you'll occasionally encounter other players out in the field. A story-driven shooter like the Halo franchise? Sure, if you don't mind digging through the developer's website to find those little bits of lore. Clans? Again, they exist on the website but don't surface in-game in a meaningful way. The pieces are there, but too many of them feel malformed or half-realized to make Destiny recommendable.

I'm still having fun with the game, but I feel like it should have been so much more than it is. Dis-ap-pointed!!!

I bet Gamestop will get a lot of trade-ins of this game. I wonder if they will keep their $40 trade-in guarantee till Oct. 8 like it says on the receipt.

Oh fuck, I am definitely taking advantage of that. If I can make it out of Destiny with only a $20 loss I suppose I'll be pretty happy.

People acting like a 74 isn't that bad in the realm of AAA are ridiculous. It's not like we're talking about niche shit like W101 or God Hand here where the press don't get it; Average joes like the gaming press are the target audience. It should be getting 10/10s across the board and be a GOTY contender for the amount of money being spent.

I was over there today to answer some questions, and yes, it is so much better. And maybe I'll engage in it if it ever seems appropriate to and get back to being comfortable there.

I think the release blowup just needs to die down a tad, which is probably why a few weeks to a month is typically why GAF seems to go into 'backlash' mode. It's not that people are necessarily hating the game, but that's when those things are able to breathe a bit on their own away from the excitement.

Edit: I saw it right after I got that post out, Dax. You're still the best.

I typically come off very negative on everything here, but I do honestly like Destiny. I think this will be one of the few (hyped) games that settles around what it deserves as far as review averages go.

Jesus at scores. Nevermind, I felt I was missing out on an amazing experience since I hate First Person, but it seems I'm not missing much yet again...one thing is for sure, Activision are great bullshitters as usual...

If only the people saying things like "Just go back to Diablo 3, it's the better loot game" were playing what Diablo 3 was at launch before a lead change and two years of improvements.
