The story actually makes me somewhat embarrassed. I would never ever be able to play this in front of anyone else. How do you explain that this game has a bigger budget than any Hollywood movie yet they didn't hire a real writer? It's not even amusing or funny at all, it's just a massive waste of resources and talent. It feels like an oil tanker that sank and spilled all its oil on a coral reef. There is so much good in the presentation yet its all gunned down by the hammiest, most embarrassing story/exposition since Final Fantasy XIII.

We need a change in this industry, we honestly do. This shit will take this medium back twenty years...

"So evil it despises other evil"

This one is the worst. Did the guy who wrote that seriously think that all evil things are buddy-buddy with other evil things because they share a common evilness? Does he think Count Dracula and Adolf Hitler would be best friends?

My second favorite is, "Beware of the sword. Its power is dark."

Which seems pretty easy in writing to decipher, the sword has a dark power to it. But the way Dinklage says the line is so methodical and plain that it sounds like he's giving a factual statement. "It's power is dark", as in, this sword has a special ability, and that special ability is "dark". Like, dark itself.

i can understand why this game has gotten average reviews, but regardless this is still the funnest game i've played in a long time :')

I got to lvl 16 today with about 10 hours put in so far, i'm trying to fill any bit of my free time with this game. i unlocked the strike team playlist today and i didn't even know that was going to be in the game, strike mission are probably my favorite thing right now.

my goal is to get suited up and ready for when the raid opens up, hopefully i can even find people so i can play it, i don't have anyone i roll with. sadly this game so far has been flying solo.

so, my psn (ps4) is NEONBEAR. i play about anytime from midnight all the way to 6am (central time) and otherwise whenever i can get on. anyone that needs a friend to play with add me, invite me, i'll accept/join/chat/play/explore with open arms.

to be fair:
1) the average blockbuster movie has a pretty basic story and relies on special effects and action.
2) that budget is for a 10 year period of upgrades and addons, as well as all advertising.

also harry potter series had a combined budget of 1.15billion and they already had the books to build from.

This is also a big concern for me lately. Do developers think that they can write all of the dialogue? Or are they hiring people who don't take any time to immerse themselves in other creations and consider what works and what doesn't?

I think a problem with game writing is an assumption that getting the plot all on the table, throwing in some one liners, and working in a twist is all it takes to make for a good story. When in actuality, you need a lot more: Developed characters with unique speaking styles that reflect their personalities, fleshed-out pasts for locations and people that gives context to why they are the way they are today, an overarching moral that ties the entire story together and makes there a sort of 'message' underneath all of the hypotheticals... it's all stuff that you wouldn't realize is important if you just think of writing as an easy thing anyone can do, but if you immerse yourself in enough art with great storytelling it starts to become apparent when something is as shallow as a puddle.

Count Dracula wasn't evil though, just angry and misunderstood.

Do I need to download something from PS store in order to unlock the ps exclusive content in the game? I havent seen the exodus blue map yet.

Hey, at least the average blockbuster movie tells a whole story and while basic is normally coherent and has characters.

I agree. Well said.

Blockbuster movies generally have decent presentation, acting, and a few emotional scenes. I wouldn't call their stories high brow, but they're generally coherent. A lot of video games match this standard, Destiny is not one of them.

4 months ago I did hope that Destiny's story would be interesting and engaging. The beta put my expectations at rock bottom. The actual story that I got met my expectations, at least.

Getting a kraken club is easier than deciphering these fucking legendary engrams

This story AHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAH

"So evil it despises other evil"

"I don't have time to explain why I don't have time to explain"

I want to punch the writers. And then fire them.
Head writer dude already left to 343, if I recall.

Also, my favorite was Dinklage saying in the Moon mission when you come across the
dead guardian
"Where's his Ghost?".

I was like "OHHHHHH. I GET IT. HIS GHOST."

Whoever wrote the plot, and the dialogue for that matter, needs to not work on it for any DLC or the next game. Sorry, but its horrible and laughable at best.

Also the voice director. What the fuck. Dinklage is a damn fine actor, and his lines were delivered largely in an awkward fashion that still has my friends and I cracking up when we're playing and one of us says

"Where's his GHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUST" which sounds like "where's his goose" which imho would make the game so much better.

Also what's the point of getting all of these great voice actors if you're gonna have them say 3 fucking lines of dialogue lol, such wasted talent.

Incidentally, Marty O'Donnell was not just the composer, but audio director responsible for recording vocal performances. He was, of course, fired. We don't know why for certain, but I wonder if that had to do with it. The music is great but they really fell down on the vocal work, hard.

breh

since launch i've had three legendary engrams total

I've gotten one legendary engram total. It had a strange coin inside.

The progression in Destiny is bullshit. What the fuck am I supposed to do? Vanguard strikes get me nothing and Crucible drops are a total crapshoot. The only reliable option is buying lv20 gear from vendors but ranking up takes like a month. All that crucible today and I'm at like 150/2000 for rank fucking 2 which doesn't even give me weapons. Also I won most of my matches. Fuck.

Seriously frustrating.

This is where paying attention to the actual lore of the game makes these lines not nearly as bad within context.

"Evil so evil..." References that ALL of the enemies are servants of The Darkness... yet they still hate each other.

"Beware of the Sword. It's power is dark." Again, referencing that the power of the sword is that of one forged from The Darkness... So it's especially deadly to the players, whose power is rooted in The Light.

A lot of people are shitting on the dialogue for being overly prose or cheesy but if you look at the dialogue to most major movies, books, whatever... the lines will come across that way if you're being overly skeptical of the content. This is true of pretty much every written medium that I can think of. Ranging from Saturday Morning cartoons to major dramatic motion pictures.

See i look at Destiny differently, i see what is currently released as being nothing more than the bare minimum groundwork with a vauge story that serves only to introduce the guardians and the enemies, while presenting the player with certain plot points that are not followed up on.

I consider it a hub from which they intend to grow the game in all aspects, we go through story lines and are introduced to things like the last warmind rasputin activating and eventually reaching out to and using other networks but its left at that, the situation with the queen and her brother is also left ambiguous. I feel as though they have huge plans for where to take both the gameplay and the story but want to do so over the course of time and use these updates for both revenue and to keep the core players interested or at least wiling to hold on to the game and pick up play again when they next feel the desire.

with that in mind it makes much more sense to me, and the overly obviois suggestion at the end of the story currently that states in no uncertain terms that this is just the beginning only further underlines that.

its not that bad. i'm level 2 (nearly 3) with futurewar and i'll be able to buy whatever i want pretty quick soon.

crucible/van rep doesn't stand out quite enough for me to prioritize that just yet anyways.

i kinda dislike the farming stuff though. it'll probably be stopped pretty quick but ugh

It does seem a little too luck-based. I've spent the last few hours doing Crucible matches, and watching the crucible marks counter slowly tick up has been discouraging. Equally disappointing is the fact that I keep getting first place slot, but never get any of the drops.

Are all of those people running around with light gear just lucky rollers? Just how far behind the curve am I going to be if my RNG counts don't stack up right?

Ah yes, that deep, rich lore that by that point in the game was shown to us. Oh wait. No, it wasn't. It wasn't shown. It was all 100% outside the game.

How long did it take you to reach that rank with the faction? Do faction ranks level quicker than regular Crucible/Vanguard?

I couldn't play yesterday! I'm in love with this game

Funny thing is that I'm level 17 now and I only did 1 level in the Moon!!! I'm enjoying co-op so much and some PvP from time to time. Although I get my ass kicked so hard.. I really suck :(

I would hope the groundwork for a space epic would make players interested in the Universe and its characters so they are excited to see more being revealed as time goes on. But this was just a tangled mess of hammy writing and vague goals that didn't make me interested in Destiny's world at all.

Considering their main storytellers are likely going to be the paid expansions, I'm going to be dissapointed if it turns out my $60 purchase wasn't for a complete story, but the groundwork for a story I need to pay more money to experience.

2-3 days. but i play a lot of crucible and bounties play into the rep gain as well too.

imo, everything levels higher in the crucible. maybe medals + score count as actual exp or something but if you're any good the progression shits all over pve

if you're good

if not, hang around and be that guy that gets gifted a legendary ship and exotic off the back of someone going 30-1 lol

Just completed the daily mission for level 24 at level 22... Sort of cheesed it at the end. Kept running around letting my super build up and then lashed at the princes. Rinse and repeat until they got low and then I would go ham on them.

I'm 3 coins away from them but at lvl23 I can't really do the lvl26 weekly heroic which means I won't get them this week and they probably won't be in next week. All I need is some mroe fucking light but the game won't give me it. It'll gladly give me a billion blues that are all worse than what I have been using for the past 5 levels or so.

It's not 100% outside the game but the richest aspects of it are, sure. The fact remains that it doesn't make the dialogue bad. It means that they didn't effectively deliver the lore in-game. It's a vital distinction.
