Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Is there a way to lower graphical settings lower than what are options in the graphics menu? My Radeon 6870 can't run this thing at 75 fps with the rift. Too juttery to play. Its really bumming my out.

:(

You're going to need a new GPU my friend.

"How demanding is this game really? I know what the official site says, but like, do you really need a quad core CPU? Seems a bit high."

Quad Core CPUs have been the minimum for relatively medium graphic intensive games for some time now. I definitely don't feel comfortable recommending it to someone on a 2.3ghz dual core processor.

Eh, you've been able to run most games (not including the most demanding ones) decently on a dual core. And I don't really understand what this game does that is so CPU intensive. Again, there's not terribly much going on at any one time. You're either in a spaceport (which looks visually nice but doesn't really seem all that complex) or the blackness of space, pretty much, with a ship or two adding to that. I guess the larger PVP battles can demand a bit more though.

They've been quick to point out that the game has seen almost no optimization at all up to this point while they add in features. The final game is expected to run a hell of a lot better.

Phinious: Judder in the Rift isn't caused by a weak video card, go read up on it on the official forums, it's a driver/software/configuration issue in the SDK and runtime that they're still working on (you can be running the game at 120+fps and still get judder when you look around). There was also a new runtime and firmware released just a couple of days ago, did you update?

Yeah I have everything up to date, but my fps is only in the 50s. When I turn my head it judders. Sucks so bad because if I keep my head straight, it's sooo cool. Bought ED and a hotas just for the rift.

I will definitely be picking this game up whenever Oculus decides to ship my rift.

Yes, that would be... VERY NICE of them.

Well, hopefully I'll know more in a few days.. my Rift is in the mail.

With a GTX-680, I'm getting roughly 60fps at 1080p/max. I won't know for sure how well it'll translate into the Rift until I get it. I hope I don't have to turn things down too much, this game is gorgeous.

I just made a delivery from Aulin to Wyrd, took six jumps and I docked with only 2% fuel remaining. That's the closest I've been to running out of gas since I started playing.. hehe.

For those in the beta ... not sure if premiums will know more but ... how expansive is this game at this stage of development - right now?

I'm on a cheap Star Citizen package and was considering checking out ED too but for £100 I want to know it has more than what SC has atm, which is just an attack mode on 2 maps and soon a racing mode.

Elite is precisely a billion times further along than Star Citizen. Seriously, isn't not even close.

While many major features are still incoming, Elite's persistent universe is already live. Combat, trade, missions and interstellar travel are all working. VR support is also far ahead of Star Citizen's.

Thank you, sounds good.

Any ideas when the game is expected to release?

Trying to figure out how many months I'm getting to play early for that £60 (I should go for the £100 premium beta right? Since the next one is coming soon or something?).

^ Thanks, I needed that. Was hoping to have lots to do as I also recently bought HOTAS for SC and finding myself without much to do.

Will check back with the next update to see how much it adds I guess.

Elite should be released by the end of the year. If sales are good, at least two major expansions are planned: Planetary landing/exploration and being able to walk around ships.

Not too bad a wait then...Might grab the full game when it's out instead, pre-expansions.

That £100 beta covers post-release expansions too? Not too greedy then. Might go for it when my DK2 arrives.

edit: A new beta with more features should be launching soon but I don't think I've seen a date yet.

(I'm actually a backer of both games. Just explaining the situation. Frontier's existing infrastructure + Elite's smaller scope gave them a big head start over Star Citizen)

Does the £100 premium beta cover the expansion packs that will be out after the game releases?

Sounds like it:

"And all the people who backed the at premium beta, which is finishing soon, as part of that they get all the expansions. So there are still benefits to these things."

Apparently they will offer a season pass for £35 which covers it as well. So it's £30 more for access to the beta basically.

But he says it is finishing soon and that interview was posted 11 July 2014...

Aww it's closed not available anyway "Purchase of Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta is now closed "

Guess it's not long a wait.

Fucking sweet, I didn't know that. Worth the extra twenty-five bucks after all (aside from the fact that I've had a blast playing it).

This will be the first major space sim released since 1999. I think we can forgive Frontier for going with crowdfunding.

I'm appalled by this and the amount of $ that's gone into SC. I'm sorry, but I hope this trend doesn't continue on any wide scale manor.

I haven't read through all 35 pages of the thread, but does anyone know how well this plays with mouse + keyboard for flight? Is it even possible or is a flight stick required? Yes, I'm one of those guys that plays flight sims with the mouse and keyboard. Been doing it since the DOS days.

Doable with a lot of reconfigurations (official forums). Not prefered though, even a 360 gamepad would be better imo. Did you ever play a 6 dof space sim on keyboard+mouse in the past? Then perhaps my opinion is worth shit for someone like you :p

this game should be talked about more. just saw some streams and vids and this game looks absolutely incredible! one thing missing is planetary landing and exploration which i'm not sure if it's in the pipeline.

General exploration will be in the final game. Planetary landings are coming as an expansion or DLC/add-on later.

Oh yeah, literally every flight sim/6 DOF game I've played has been with mouse + keyboard EXCEPT for MS Flight Simulator X which I bought a MS Sidewinder for. Not sure where the AC adapter is for it.

I've recently been replaying Tie Fighter through DOSBox and have been using mouse + keyboard just as I did back in the day. Works great for me.

I might look into getting a flight stick and throttle when this comes out. Can anyone recommend a decent flight stick/throttle combo that won't break that bank that would work well with Elite?

End of the year is an overly optimistic estimate, ATM the game has the skeletons but not much meat. And a lot of things still needs to be added (mining, black hole systems, more missions, more mobs, rep system, etc) or else people are going to lose interest in the game after a while. Early 2015 is probably a more realistic estimate.

I agree. When I made that post, I was positive that Frontier said they'd release by the end of the year. ...but now I think I'm getting them confused with Obsidian and Pillars of Eternity.

Those examples are not 6 DoF though, unless my memory of tie fighter is very very hazy.

Newsletter #40

We are announcing today that the price of the final release of Elite: Dangerous will be £39.99 ($59.99 and €49.99).

We are also announcing a special pre-order digital pack, the Elite: Dangerous Mercenary Edition, which is a bonus pre-order game collection loaded with digital extras.

The pack is available on our store today for new customers at a discounted price off the final release of £35.00 ($50 and €40) plus the addition of the Mercenary Pack extras. Anyone who has already pre-ordered the final release version of Elite: Dangerous (including of course Alpha, Premium Beta and Beta participants) will also receive the bonus pre-order collection when the game is released.

We are hugely appreciative of all of you who have shown us support, either backing the game through the Alpha and Beta phases or pre-ordering the game prior to the release. Without you the game would not be at the stage it is today. This collection is our way of rewarding your support before we put out our final release.

As well as a digital download copy of the game, the pack will contain:

- An additional Eagle fighter ship docked in a secondary location
- Exclusive pack of ship paint jobs
- A day one ship decal
- A digital players guide
- A digital concept art book
- Plus additional in-game benefits and other digital goodies to be announced over the coming weeks

But if I buy the Mercenary Edition now, I don't get beta access and get to play right now, do I?

Doesn't sound like it.

Think I'll still wait. I've got plenty of games to hold me over til it releases proper. My willpower is wanning though...

This is probably the dumbest question ever but if I pressed the left pedal, expecting to yaw... would the ship rotate to the left or to the right?

-edit-

For some reason both options sound right AND wrong:

If the ship goes left it kind of makes sense since you're using the left pedal... but now your legs are kind of looking away from the direction you're turning, and viceversa.

IRL yaw pedals work like this:

Right pedal goes forward, plane yaws right

It may feel strange at first but you'll get used to it.

I see, thanks!

Maybe it would feel better if I used something like the saitek pro flight pedals instead of the pedals of my G27 wheel, haha!

Wow this looks incredible. I REALLY want to play the beta, but I want some sort of permanence to the "work" I do in an mmo... so I'll probably wait till it finally releases.

Finally got my HOTAS working again, so I played for a bit in the Oculus Rift tonight, tweaked the settings a bit for decent performance.

Holeeee SHIT

I don't think I'm ever going back. I was grinning like an idiot and actually saying "WOAH" out loud the first time I made a hyperspace jump. Spent about fifteen minutes just circling Aulin Enterprise and following another Viper around at close range, where I could just look out the window, totally different way of tracking and following another ship.

What ship would you guys recommend for the Rift? One that has a really wide view out of the cockpit. I think the Sidewinder has one, what about the Eagle? And the Lacon-6 has the "bubble" canopy where you can look down below you, but I don't have enough cash for a Lacon just yet.
