Is it really that difficult to accept that "maybe" Bungie might be responsible for the unrealistic expectations with their confusing and at times contradictory marketing campaign?

As a PC gamer this argument makes absolutely no sense to me. I would have the same problems with the game if I played it on PC or PS4.

It's also our fault we expected a story at least as coherent as Halo CE, with real characters.

The features are bare bones, but my social experience so far has been rich. Loads of great players, and this game comes to life in co-op IMO.
 
Eurogamer gave what I think is a good review, essentially that the story is too thin but the core game play is solid, really coming into form with the Strikes and once you hit 20 and beyond.

I feel the story presentation is fine, I consider it mostly a backdrop for a MP focused game like this although having the grimoire cards reatricted to their website is very cumbersome and I think sways people away from figuring more out about the game's lore. They should have just made a menu screen to view them in game and maybe even just press the options button as soon as you get one to read it immediately, situation allowing of course.

Love the gameplay, although the missions do get tiresome. Repeating the same formula of fighting to a certain point, have your Ghost access something, defend Ghost, move to next point and repeat get's old. Strikes are fun to complete and PVP is fast paced and fun. Glad to see a new FPS that has double jumping/high jumping, maps don't have a lot to explore but being able to double jump and high jump opens up numerous attack oppurtunities and ways to engage your opponents whether in PVE or PVP.

I've almost exclusively played Destiny since the midnight launch last week, around 50 hours, and am at level 24. My only experience of the game before release was the free weekend beta they launched and maybe an article or two on Eurogamer, so I can't relate to any of the talk of Bungie's "arrogance" or their possibly lofty descriptions of the game before release. I feel that as long as the Beta was played then prospective gamers should have had the gist of what they were going to get in the final game.

Hope to see you guys and gals out there if you enjoy the game too.

I was pretty down on the game at first, because of the shitty story and the unreal expectations that were set, but honestly I really do think that, in time, this game will be amazing. I think the foundation is rock solid and so many of my complaints (e.g., lame social features, matchmaking) can be fixed in a patch.

I'm not arguing that Destiny should please everyone. That's a horrible mentality in game design that destroys creativity and uniqueness in games.

But I'm willing to accept that sometimes, the game that I love doesn't click with people because it does a poor job of explaining or presenting itself. The Wonderful 101 being a great example. I don't blame people for not "getting" it, or accuse them of it being their fault they don't like the game. But I understand why they may not get it, with the game itself being part of the reason.

It's very likely that Destiny will end up being an amazing game once the kinks are worked out. I don't think a lot of people are against that notion. But those who are sitting here saying the game should get a free pass from criticism because it MIGHT get better in the future need to stop. Destiny, as it is right now, is an above average game with some glaring flaws that don't make the game unplayable, but shouldn't be ignored. Some people will look past those flaws and love it. Some won't. It doesn't mean those flaws aren't there.

People seem to not understand the criticism of "yes, we get it's supposed to be a loot grinding game, but there are rewarding loot grinding games and tedious loot grinding games. this leans more towards the latter". Compare vanilla D3 and Reaper of Souls. Everyone gets that grinding for loot in ROS is way more satisfying because the game keeps you going by constantly giving you small carrots. Here and in vanilla D3 we just have a really long stick.

To be honest, I'm not sure how to respond to you here. I get that you're sharing a nice experience that you had with Destiny, and that's all well and good. However, that's not all you did within that post. You also made the claim that this sort of experience could not be provided by a mediocre game. This is what I disagreed with, as I've seen plenty of games that are mediocre and worse have moments comparable to what you described.

I'm not trying to move the discussion off track, I was simply trying to get you to substantiate the claim you made. You didn't mention any individual games by name, but you did indirectly compare Destiny to any other game that is considered mediocre, and claim that they could not offer an moment of gameplay comparable to your example. That in my experience is completely false, and being "on par with other games" doesn't mean much without any indication of what those other games are. Is it on par with Quake 3 Arena? Or just something Lost Planet (which would have plenty of moments like your Gears example).

In order for a game to receive 9/10 on the strength of a single mode, that mode would have to be a lot better than "on par" with most other games. That's all.

Not even loot games do that. If you get an unidentified Legendary item and you identify it, you get a Legendary. The engram system is really stupid because it's a needless combination of unidentified items and Valve item chests.

I can't imagine the rage if that actually happened in games like diablo or poe.

Especially considering vets of either game almost know exactly what it has dropped from the art asset and base item type it is.
 
Quite annoyed that 2 nights later pure farming I haven't managed to get anything better than what I already have had. Nearly 70 Green Engrams and 20 Engrams, even one legendary, I haven't advanced a single light stat. Not that any of the other loot actually means anything, because glimmer is pointless.

I have maxed out both Gunslinger and Blade Dancer before I managed to level up once. I wonder if this is the reason IGN is taking so long, they are busy farming trying to get to the raid.

I wouldn't care if the engrams didn't have a rarity assigned to them and all of them had a chance to give you an item of all rarity values but man, getting an item with a lower rarity value than the engram itself is really upsetting and makes no sense.

Not sure. The Bungie forums are also filled with the zealot apologists and deat-to-destiny types... both ends of the spectrum. I'm not on there enough to be able to tell which is winning but i do see a lot of criticism. Bungie used to take that to heart and be really into what their players thought. We'll have to see if the old-Bungie really is gone.

Until its fixed, all we have to do is repetitive and unchallenging gunplay... or play that PvP mode. If they did fix it, the only thing they could do is make things more common right?

I just wish all of the green and useless shit could have been built up into something more, I wish I was levelling while I was farming etc. Why did Bungie think this system was a good idea.

Is anyone implying that they won't? The whole reason people are complaining about it is with the hope that Bungie considers the issue a priority, not because they think they'll never fix it.

If anything, the problem is with the people blinding defending the game saying there IS no issue with the loot system. They are actually impeding the effort to get Bungie to fix it. They may end up liking the new loot system even more than the current one, but they can't see past that.

The problem is that right now, at this very moment, the loot system is bunk. Regardless of the future, here, in the now, it's bunk.

Just got my white ps4 bundle come in yesterday. Couldn't even play destiny because of wifi problems :(
Does the ps4 have a bad wifi card or what :/

Also regarding the loot system. It's not like Bungie was walking into unknown territory and this is some mysterious new game mechanic.

Loot games have existed for a very long time, and Bungie has no excuse in walking 20 steps backwards in this respect.

I've not read a single post defending the engram situation.

The "worst" I've seen is "it's that way because Legendary's are aupposed to be rare" but every time I've seen this written it's been followed with "they should make legendary engrams guaranteed, but just have less of them".

There is definitely not an army of people defending the current state of loot. There's 0 chance Bungie are not aware of this feedback. Whether it not they're listening to it is another matter entirely.
 
I honestly don't find any particular aspect of the loot to be really egregious or offensive, other than purple engrams giving blue loot. That is just bullshit when they are already rare as it is.
 
I don't know how to feel about IGN grinding to get into the raid.

VERY good point! They should implement something like every 50 (or some number) green uncommons found and dismantled will give you a guaranteed legendary engram of random loot. SOMETHING. What is the point of the thousands of uncommons one picks up besides the random weapon part? At level 20 or above they dont serve a purpose... or am i missing something?

Then stop "pure" farming. I played pvp, just pvp, and hit 24 having fun and upgrading my gear on whatever I was rewarded. In a couple more games' worth of reputation I'll have two pieces of legendary gear of my choice from the vendor. Zero "grinding", just me doing what I want to be doing.

I have vanguard marks from dicking around with my friends that will get me another two legendaries of my choosing once my reputation hits high enough. And it will, I just wont force it.

Legendary engrams decoding into rares is a major fault, but its not like they dont give you a much more lucrative path that you even get some semblance of control over.

Not everyone might want to pvp.

And if you want to raid, you have to grind in someway to get 'geared' enough to do so.

All well and good; however, what if you're in the large group of us who believes the Crucible is really horrible? Maybe that's the key... all of us who are grinding forever needed to be playing PvP? *shudders*

That's the offensive part. There are already too many chances involved: 3 classes, 8 equipment slots, the various items for each slot.

Add in the chance for a lesser quality item and it just makes it feel incredibly tedious.

You still don't need to grind. Theres a separate pve vendor that gives you guaranteed legendary of your choice if you play the game (strikes, daily story, events, bounties, etc), all of which drops engrams and rewards gear regardless.

I just don't understand complaining about grinding when you don't have to. Take your time and have fun, instead of chasing a base compulsion. But thats just my two cents. I at least have my sense of enjoyment intact.

Honestly, to get the most out of Destiny I think you need to enjoy both the pve and pvp.

Well, that's an obvious statement really but the point is jumping between both feels like a well rounded and varied game to me. If you didn't like one or the other I could see how you'd find it lacking.

This game is built around the idea of synergy between the two modes, I think it's absolutely intended you take part in both rather than offering one or the other.

Fun fact, people have fun in different ways, and telling someone their sense of fun is wrong doesn't make your argument look any better.
