Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

You haven't told us how you feel about Nomura exiting FFXV yet!
Yes I did. I said that, in hindsight, I can't say this is totally surprising since I thought Tabata was originally brought to replace Nomura as the director for the sequel(s). It is somewhat surprising he'd replace Nomura already at this point. Still, I think this is still very much Nomura's project which Tabata is just taking to the finish line while SQEX let's Nomura (a known workaholic) to only direct one game with KHIII. I guess directing two massive JRPGs might've put their toll on Nomura.

That's not hard though. XIII series was way too anime.

+1 to that

Originally it had great marketing

Euphemisms galore.

Trailer is amazing. The gameplay is looking so good. Not a big fan of the dialogue here, I have never been fond of the casual or non-expository dialogue in JRPG's, but the visuals and gameplay are awesome. The game looks like it is actually making progress. Can't wait!

Am I the only one incredible underwhelmed by the trailer? The combat looks unsatisfying and the car seems to be sliding on the road, it has like no grip.

I'm concerned by how scripted the game seems. Like they're relying more on big action set peices that are seen in games like UC or Tomb Raider, instead of well designed combat with plenty of depth. XIII had many flaws, but the combat I found to be superb.

Final Fantasy XIII had that awesome final international trailer where it was perfectly synced to My Hands. Shame the game didn't live up to that potential (or My Hands making any sense in the final game either).

Is Somnus confirmed the "main lyric theme" of XV a la Melodies of Life, Eyes on Me, Suteki Da Ne, or is just an important track? I wonder if there will be another track for marketing's sake.

GOD YES!

I hate this so much! When I played Dragon's Dogma banding was really glaring at night.

Is there anything I can do to change this with my screen setting or is something I just need to deal with if its happening in the game itself ? :/

It depends on what's causing the banding. I'm not an expert on this stuff but I know that there are some instances in which it's the display's color range causing banding (if your TV's Full/Limited setting doesn't coincide with that of the Full/Limited setting of the input source), but in my experience 99% of the time it's the actual compressed image that has the color banding, so not much to do there :(

I don't know.

This is weird coming from perfo..I think the trailer has very nice composition that's similar to last year's leviathan trailer.

ahh I see...that sucks. I hate banding. One of my least favorite things when it comes to visuals.

Well Nomura made a lot of those trailers...

Yeah maybe he didn't direct this and that could be the reason, but it's a trend that started already with LR btw, trailers for that sucked too compared to XIII and XIII-2. That said Stella looks so beautiful T.T

Noctis would probably look like his brooding self, and Nomura would say 'He's a pretty cool guy actually.'

Yeah, Nomura basically said he was going to be a lot different than people expected once we heard him talk than we had been lead to believe by the early images.

I agree with you on the game feeling scripted.

And what if the car scenes are on rails? They would be basically pulling the corridors from XIII all over again :)

Really? I remember looking out for that feature back at that E3 and not finding any hint. I really hope it makes it in. I have the same worries about Xenoblade X... they've never shown footage where you control other characters.
Yes, we see Prompto & Gladiolus being controlled for, like, 2 seconds in the E3 2013 trailer. Prompto is doing some slide 'n shoot move and Gladiolus performs a suplex to an enemy soldier.

We also saw other characters being controlled in the January 2011 trailer. Prompto shoots airborn enemies and blows up something in the environment to cause some environmental damage to a Behemoth, Gladiouls is seen swinging his heavy sword and Noctis' other friends get some screentime as well. This just screams marketing wanting to control the information of the game. They'll probably do something similar they've done in the past. They'll show some glimpses of gameplay with the other characters in the future, then some few months before release they'll start a series of trailers/Famitsu articles where the different characters & their gameplay styles are being focused on.

Can't wait for Yasue to replace Nomura as director for KH3 then. Don't worry I'm sure it'll still very much be Nomura's project which Yasue is just taking to the finish line while SQEX lets Nomura (a known workaholic) retire. I guess working at a shitty company might've taken its toll on Nomura.

Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if this happen.

Hell, I am surprised that Nomura is still in the company.

I've watched this thing a bunch of times now and I'm ready to be a bit more critical. On my last watch, I came to the conclusion that I think my only real issue is the car. The car looks stupid. I get that they probably drove it out of the city and into the wilderness, so it's not going to be a rugged Jeep.

Fine.

I also know they've tagged this thing as "fantasy based on reality." Also fine. I just don't like that the thing looks like a Mercedes. If it looked a little more unique and fantasy/futuristic, I think it'd be a little less off-putting.

I agree with you on the game feeling scripted.

And what if the car scenes are on rails? They would be basically pulling the corridors from XIII all over again :)

The game isn't completely scripted and lulzno, the car parts aren't on rails. The thing is, Nomura wanted to include a lot of those kind of "banter between friends" moments into actual gameplay situations without taking any control away from the gamer and that's what we see in the trailer. First time you see that huge-ass monster, you'll get that exchange between Noctis & friends. Think of Uncharted and how Nathan is always bantering with the NPCs while stuff is happening around them without the game taking the control away from the player during those moments.

I have played all of them except the onlines and XII.

All the FF worlds have been very contrasted, but always consistent. Like you wouldn't find a car that could belong to the Queen of England next to a 1000 feet behemoth surrounded by skycrappers and crystal shards.

Sure, we had the Daytona, the Trains in FF8, and all kind of vehicles in every FF. But their design always matched the world they were in. Motherfucking Magitech, anyone?

Perhaps FFIV with the Hovercraft could be a precedent. But do I need to say that this fancy black cabrio seems to have (judging by this trailer) much more protagonism?

Honestly, when I look at the FFXV trailers I'm not sure about what kind of world to expect. The game keeps looking like a random mix of assets. Of course, every final fantasy has a world full of contrast, but I think this time they took it too far. That's just my opinion!

I'm not going to say that this is a big issue, of course. I'll just be patient and wait to play the goddamn thing, expecting that the world makes sense once I'm playing in it. So there's no need to hate guys.

That character design, tho...

Actually it is very consistent. The car fits perfectly with the high-end Metropolitan like area (the one from the original FFvs13 trailers) they likely escaped/ran from.

Also take into account there probably wouldn't be many, if any, off-road vehicles sitting around in the area like in the original trailers and probably not many options to pick out a vehicle during an invasion.

Do out honestly think Nomura is near the end of his relationship with Square, duckroll?

I'm just asking I haven't seen many of your posts on game side recently and I have no idea how or when you wrote an honest and thought out post in regards to Nomura and Square, can I get a link to it?

Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if this happen.

Hell, I am surprised that Nomura is still in the company.

He's had a very prolific career as a character designer in the company and still does.

I wonder who would replace him if he does.Akihiko Yoshida, the only one as iconic as Nomura, has already left.

I guess he could do freelance or maybe new talent will come to light.

Its a very sad thing to think about.

It looks like they'll be playable in the demo. From another thread:

The name "Episode Duscae" is confirmed and is derived from a particular event.
- The playing time will not be the scene of Leviathan but an advanced area of the game.
- The scenario will be a forest / grassland green.
- You will have full control of Noctis and two other heroes.
- The demo will have an average duration similar to that seen with that of FF XIII.
- There is no mention of retail version at the time (limited edition will ?!) but DD, always with date to be determined.

The guy apparently works for Famitsu.

Part of the charm of the FF franchise to me has always been that it takes place in a different time. Like medieval, or steampunk etc... This feels like a modern day FF. I really dislike that they did that. The combat looks cool though. And the world seems to be pretty vast. It's promising but really, it could go either way. If it ends up sucking I wouldn't be surprised.

First you say the charm of FF franchise is the setting are always different. Then you say you dislike this because the setting here is modern and different.

Make up your mind?

why only 2? The trailer showed 4-men party. Are they leaving one out?

No matter how good it looks like (and it looks really good), I will not go into premature hype mode. This is what FF XIII did to me. I lost faith. But I wouldn't mind if they deliver in the end. I just don't want another stupid story, packaged within beautiful graphics. No more Le Ciel, Fal Ciel crap pls. Never. Again.

Pls don't fuck this up Square Enix.

I think this is a good attitude to have really. FFXIII burned hard...

I am happy the trailer came but I think its pretty heartbreaking to know that Nomura left.

There is no doubt that this is his project and vision and ,like people say, his baby.

He even wore Noctis' outfit to Japan expo and flew all the to way france to meet the fans.

It would really suck if Nomura doesn't get credited with Director on the game or if there is any conflict or disagreement behind his departure from development.

I feel sad because I hoped we would see this through to the end with him on the lead.

The l'Cie and fal'Cie "crap" is still all in this game. And in Type-0 HD.

I'm surprised they didn't just tack him on as Creative Director in the end.

this is the higher "resolution" version. Not that good quality. The FFXV screenshot quality since it's reveal from last year's E3 has been terrible.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate it!

I feel the same way. At the same time, even if I get burned it's awesome to be this excited about a game again. I haven't had this in a long time. Smash Bros. was going to be it, but then they cut Lucas. I'm just going to ride this wave of hype and hope it delivers.

Nomura, you son of a bitch. Goddamn. You son of a bitch! Oh my God, oh my God. Fucking incredible!

I was once inconsolably angry. Now I am at peace. You have my sword you bastard. Thank you.
