Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

Why did they announce it in public like that though ? That kinda sucked and was unnecessary.

They could have kept up a facade infront of the fans that Nomura is still "co-director" or "creative director" or anything.

Now it feels like, frankly, he got kicked out.

Have you considered that maybe Nomura didn't want to keep up a facade? If this is a case of Nomura being taken off the project and his final vision being compromised to ship the game, would he want his name on it as director? It takes two hands to clap. When there's internal tension between business and creative, it can be very hard to keep up the pretense.

It is entirely possible that Nomura is forcing this announcement specifically to make it look the way you say it does, because that's the only way he can communicate it to his fans and he doesn't want to lie to people. Note that Nomura hasn't given any interview or statement regarding his removal as director. Previously he would be the first to make comments about anything new regarding the title at media events. I think that's pretty telling.

This is so beautiful. I am crying.

Whaaat?!

Noooooooooooooooo. Oh my god, you just ruined my day. :(

there really isn't anything wrong with the FNC mythology. i think it's pretty damn good, actually.

ffxiii just used it in the worst possible way, never properly explaining terms or events and basically contaminating the whole of FNC by association. people now use it as a symbol of ffxiii's shittiness.

Both more hyped and less hyped after seeing this. Graphics and gameplay look pretty nice, but pretty much every single sentence spoken in that trailer was awkward. I hope the party won't be acting like annoying teenagers the whole game through.

What? Pretty much sounds like the kind of stuff you'd expect from a bunch of young men - what exactly are you hoping for?

I thought it was a nice change of pace and the localization looks good so far.

I'm watching the trailer again and I realized, this gave me the same feeling as Final Fantasy: TSW when the trailer for that movie was revealed in theaters, that is to say, I don't feel the Final Fantasy vibe at all. If it wasn't for the Prelude at the end, I won't even think that this is Final Fantasy, just another nice-looking action-RPG. :|

I thought it was pretty good actually, and I'm like super critical about this stuff normally.

Just felt like a good time hanging out with friends on a road trip and not taking itself too seriously.

I don't think the last bit matters much at all. No one's really said anything about the game for over a year now.

I just think we don't know anything as of yet. It does sound bad, though. I mean it's Tetsuya freaking Nomura.

Trailer sounded like 4 friends on a long road trip. I liked it.

Wasn't Nomura the one who would give us any info at all? Was it him that said there would be more info after last TGS? Less Silence? I forget.

All I can say is he left for negative reasons.

Yeah, can't say I'm that surprised. I remember what he said last year about being glad they didn't decide to scale down the game from the original idea. I'm thinking him not wanting to do that and taking too long probably got him removed from the project.

I'm very inclined to believe they'll be cutting content from the game. I'm still excited but my expectations have really kind of settled down from the moment I heard he was no longer the director.

Also that makes me very sure that Nomura is going to walk out after KH3.

I was just saying yesterday how FFIX made me happy playing it. I'm getting similar vibes. I agree.

Funny you mention that. I saw the stuff you and APZoneRunner were saying in the thread the other day and I agree wholeheartedly.

I don't think SE will ever make another game with the kind of heart and soul FFIX has, but yes, I enjoyed this trailer. The big guy calling Noct "your highness" and him telling him to lay off - I already like that dynamic, in concept. That's more genuine than what we ever got from XIIIs' character interaction. If they can keep the writing in that range, they'll be on the right track to making a game that makes me smile as opposed to gritting my teeth.

All of the news today strikes me as a good start down a good road.

I like Nomura so the departure is really unfortunate. Much like Matsuno and Tanaka before him I can see XV being the straw that breaks the camel's back.

That's true.

I haven't thought of it that way but this could really be a way of him communicating that to the fans.

The entire situation is rather sad.

Yes! I don't think we've ever disagreed, haha.

Wasn't Nomura the one who would give us any info at all? Was it him that said there would be more info after last TGS? Less Silence? I forget.

It was Shinji Hashimoto, director of Final Fantasy. I don't think anything he says is of substance, though. I mean if anybody would tell people to wait, it would be the damn director of Final Fantasy.

Really, though. I don't think Nomura's departure hurts this game per se but it's not a good outlook for the long-term. Getting pessimistic now.

We've seen Tetsuya Takahashi, Yasumi Matsuno, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Nobuo Uematsu leave. Nomura leaving wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Yup. It was pretty down-to earth exchange between the guys. Not a hint of pretentiousness
in any of the dialogue. Unlike the FF13 saga, which was so cringe -worthy with regards to
dialogue and character interactions.

He's well liked, reliable, and has managed to ship a bunch of games in the last generation. There's a lot of vitriol online with regards to his recent products, but he seems to have strong internal support. I'm sure he's working on other projects right now, but S-E is probably careful now not to announce stuff until they have something worthwhile to show. I think how they've handled Type-0 HD is a good example of this. They didn't want to release any footage to the public until they had something attractive to share.

This is painful. I don't care he can't put games faster than anyone else in the company. He's an awful director and writer.

I'd like to believe that the core of the game has been finished (it better goddamn be after this long) and it is mostly polish and tweaking of the battle system and such, something you don't need Nomura to be a full time director for. It seemed obvious that Nomura had his hand tied in too many projects and at this point he's probably moving full time to KH3.

I don't think any other director has as much respect at Square as Nomura, so he would definitely get as much creative freedom and $$$ as Square can possibly offer for a project.

Hmmm.. remember that FF Committee thing? Nomura was not part of it because SE had other plans for him, iirc. Perhaps it's related somehow... just a guess... I dunno :(
Well, that is pretty easy to explain. FFXV was never meant to be more than a one-time thing for Nomura. Nomura always said that FFXV would be the first & last mainline FF he'd direct, kind of his "ultimate vision" of a Final Fantasy. So apart from FFXV, he was always going to return to Kingdom Hearts & other things afterwards and not stay as a kind of major figure for FF's future, other than designing some main characters.

Whaaat?!

Noooooooooooooooo. Oh my god, you just ruined my day. :(

Don't worry about it. None of the Fabula Nova games follow the same exact mythos, only different interpretations of a general one Nojima envisioned before the 13 franchise kicked off.

FF13 trilogy's l'cie are different from Type 0 and FF15's l'cie, falcie may not even exist as a concept ect.

I honestly may be back on board. I like the outside environment and traversal seems neat. The whole slow Kingdom Hearts thing makes combat seem just the tiny bit off. It also reminded me of Xenoblade with those creatures in a field and that was surprising plus.

Also I realized I hate the idea of playing as a Prince who isn't a kid. They're cool to be in your party but I can't think of a single piece of fiction in the last twenty years I liked where a prince was the main character (except the Lion King).

Also I really don't like the best friend character and the others aren't really doing it for me either. I'll have to see more about the world traversal (I.e. how large and connected areas are).

I'm guessing early 2016 for the West if not internationally.

This.

I've said before the game doesn't look all that great as a game. It still doesn't (it looks good and fun, but nothing groundbreaking), but they finally loosened up on the opera/Shakespeare stuff.

It seems like they may have reigned in the tone some and it's really refreshing.

Yes! I don't think we've ever disagreed, haha.

*high-five*

i would be super sad if they had to compromise just so they can ship the game earlier and have to break away from the vapourware reputation of the game.

you spent so long to make it, might as well do it the right way.

this is quite saddening.

Dunno man. I think a huge war going on that could decide the fate of the planet is pretty serious.

Hmm. On the one hand, I feel bad for Nomura being taken away from what could have been his magnum opus...but on the other hand, eight fucking years.

It sucks for sure, but all this time he's been playing with somebody else's money. If things were that bad I'm surprised SE humored him for as long as they did.

I wouldn't worry about slow combat, most of this trailer he's using that huge oversized sword (one of many weapons) so that's why it's weighty and slow.

Others say weighty and slow, I say weighty and satisfying. It looks magnificent. KH1 has my favorite action RPG combat ever because the combat is so weighty and deliberate. Every hit counts. This looks much the same way. This single trailer has gotten me more hyped than basically everything since the original announcement combined.

I don't understand the gushing over this trailer. Battle system looks awkward. The warp from place to place action seems undercooked. Actual driving of the car is not shown. Scale of the world remains unclear. Awkward dialogue and unclear story focus.

This trailer was terrible compared to the prior ones too. Seems thrown together just to show something because it would have been disgraceful not to.

Well mind blown and jaw dropped.
I am excited for more.
Like how it says in development now. Guess that's means it's possible it won't come in 2015, though would make sense with the demo coming early 2015

Sad to hear about Nomura leaving though... I can only hope this is for the best for both projects as it seemed quite demanding to be involved in two projects.
Hope XV doesn't suffer because of it anyway, KH3 at least looks in a more positive light now to me anyway, not that I've seen anything to suggest it's in a negative state previously. Feel better about KH3 than FFXV anyway.

Combat looks a little clunky and slow, but the game looks beautiful. I hope it's truly open world. With visuals like that, the game just begs you to explore it in a large scale.

I like Nomura so the departure is really unfortunate. Much like Matsuno and Tanaka before him I can see XV being the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Will Nomura still be involved in the game in some capacity?
I really wanted Nomura to see the whole thing out since we have waited so long and he was at the forefront of the project from the start.
I really do hope Tabata sticks to what what Nomura had planned out.

It's not like Nomura has done nothing but FFXV for eight years. Since 2006, he's been somehow involved with the creation of more than a few Kingdom Hearts games, The World Ends With You, Theatrhythms, Dissidias, Type-0, Crisis Core, Advent Children movie etc.

Dunno man. I think a huge war going on that could decide the fate of the planet is pretty serious.

Yeah, but what's interesting about that is that the trailer deliberately downplays that aspect.

News about the war comes up on the radio and one of the guy's scoffs and turns off the radio. Almost to say, "fuck that, we got adventuring to do!".

Yeah, I'm hoping he'll still make games as a director, and I think he could find his spot at another studio or even start his own if enough people from the team were to follow him. I actually hoped that would happen eventually because I wanted to see what he would do with complete freedom. It just makes me sad that XV doesn't seem to be working out in the way he would like because even if he did keep making games it seems like it would be pretty difficult to amass the same resources SE might have been able to provide.

He came up with the story concept and main character design, which likely will stay.
