Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

Dark Souls is a..."wide linear" approach at open world. I mean it still is but it is this weird mix of alot of things

It doesn't let you go anywhere at once. But you sure can go to a heck of a lot of places in many different orders.

But yeah Dark Souls has a very nuanced approach but overall its very much a dense open world with great level design.

Dark Souls is though.

Wow, I would consider Dark Souls the oposite of open world. Yes the game creates an illusion of open world, but in its core it is a linear game with tight level design, whereas for those open field areas they are still rather small just not to be too boring and predictable. Judging by what FFXV looks like it's aiming more for a complete open field thing like FFXII or Xenoblade, and that just screams grinind and boring gameplay. Oh yeah SoTC is an open world game with good design. Open world games need puzzles, mystery and no grinding. And that is unfortunatley not the tendency of majority of open world games... New Zelda will probably spice things up a bit, at least I hope.

I really don't undestand the people talking about lack of "cohesiveness", cohesiveness to what?

You know that Venice and New York share the same world, but are completely different cities? You know that a village in the countryside of China is different from a village in the countryside of Brazil? You know that there are big "yellow" deserts with strange animals and big "grey" metropolies filled with cars? You know the world we live in completely lacks of cohesiveness because there are so many different cultures?

Like the real world the realms of FFXV are different from each other because they have different cultures. And then there are deserts, forests, mountains with their own and unique wildlife like the real world. There's nothing strange about it.

I don't classify open world games based on the sheer size of the areas or the randomness of the activities.

Dark Souls definitely isn't linear.Progression can be tackled many different ways and there are many areas you can go to at any given time.

It seems open world has different meaning to different people anyway.

But 12 is one of the worst modern FF games :(

I liked the setting and atmosphere in 12 but disliked the plot and characters(save Fran and Balthier). Still the FF game I put the most hours in.

theory? the evidence of real time is there. aliasing, visible polygons, and dithering

tell them again, get a bigger whoa

I didn't notice it for the longest time. Then I looked real hard at a few key frames. Still is unbelievable; perhaps I lack the jaded attitude and keenest of eyes possessed by some folks here.

That is one part of the open world games, story structure. And FFXV will probably be more linear in that regard, but the other part is level design and that is where the fun comes from. And I have yet to play an open world game with great level design. I feel like there is a lot to inovate in open world games, but yet what we see is alwas the same Oblivion/ GTA / FFXII formula to open world design. Why did SOTC not influence any open world games. :(

I really wish I could get more into XIV. I liked the little time I played, but I can't play subscription based games, some times I just get lazy and spend weeks without touching any game because I don't feel like turning on my TV (seriously), and then suddenly I'll start playing like a madman and spend much more hours gaming than I should, I can't be sure I'll make good use of the time I'm paying for.

The pacing is what killed 12 for me. There was no hook interesting enough in the story to keep me going what felt like few interesting scenes far apart with tons of MMO esque gameplay in between. Personally out of the ''mainline'' games* I would only concider 2, 3 and maybe 1 to be worse than 12. Yes, I like 13 better, but only slightly and that is not saying much since I didn't like 12 much at all.

11 and 14 not included.

It feels like many of my friends who were huge FF fans back in the day were put off the series by 12 also, not 13. Two very dissapointing games those were, I hope XV can rekindle the love.

Like I said.Dark Souls is an open world game that challenges the "big and empty" traditionally found in other games.

FFXV should boast a big scale though ,and it should convey a sense of a large world.

I still can't believe that the Stella/Luna scene is a real-time cutscene .

Obviously we won't certainly have this quality ingame and there will be models swap à la Uncharted/TLOU but dear god ouch.

By the end of this generation ingame CG-Quality will be achieved.

And to think that this comes from Japan...

Huh? Why not? PS4 Infamous already was there.

Also, I have played open world games and loved them, I have played non open world games and loved them. Just make the game fun and with some great mechanics. I don't care how you do it.

And for the record.....I loved FF XII

I hope (I wouldn't be writing in this thread if I thought all is doom and gloom), but I have this nagging feeling that the sense of wonder will be quickly overshadowed by the boring nature of the combat grinding, and that the game will make it an even greater focus to chain the player to a specific location for as long as possible.

The story should be on constantly on the move so I think that will keep things fresh.

The main characters are hobos for the time being lol They need to find a place to hole up.

Dark Souls is more of a Metroid like and not really an open world to me.

Fully expecting this to be a short game.

I won't be surprised if we end up getting very large zones but very few of them and an unresolved story that leads on to a sequel (s).

Please don't be the White Knight Chronicles of this gen.

Fully expecting this to be a short game.

If that means rock solid pacing/combat system good enough to justify multiple playthroughs (especially if the game has multiple difficulties) you can sign me up. Shorter RPGs tend to be better anyway. Ask Chrono Trigger.

Still looking forward to this game, but it is too far away to be hyped again after waiting the complete ps3 generation for it. For the love of all that is holy please be good.

Chrono Trigger has a billion endings, though. I don't see that here.
I expect 20 hours.
