He gave a 6/10.

Justified maybe, i think he could have been more positive ..

28:35 is the perfect description of Destiny players LOL.

Compares us to a wife that keeps getting beat up but he can't stop going back because he wants to get one of those exotics.

2. Loot. It needs to drop more frequently, or when it drops it needs to be interesting. Games like Diablo and Borderlands get this right.

It does after level 15-16, the stats of the weapons improve significantly and you can customize different weapons, however they are still not as half as awesome as Diablo or Borderlands...

After hitting level 18, I am beginning to wonder what level 20 opens up for me...

I had a friend of mine who got an exotic and he was dead last on his team in control. Something along the lines of a .3 or .4 K/D ratio to boot lol. I think it was a hand canon that I wanted before I had to return the game to redbox. Don't remember the name.

Angry Joe summarizes exactly my opinion of the game, although he thinks most of the game's faults are due to them moving content to expansions pack to milk more money from the title. I disagree. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.
Unless incompetence can be monetized by malice.

There is not a single story thread dangled that resolves in the pre-DLC game. The Black Garden is the big bad but you know next to nothing about it or why its as important as its made out to be. The rest: Rasputin, the Hive gods outside of the system, the Awoken Queen's motives, why the Vex were gathering - all of it seems like introductions to the DLC.

I get the impression that serious knives were taken to this game to get it out of the door - and holding back what they could for DLC wouldn't surprise me one bit, though I guess we'll never know.

Hate to break it to you, but level 20 is when things fall off a cliff, lootwise. RNG is a cocktease even as you're trying to grind rep for purps: a purple engram only has about a 1/3 chance to turn into a purple, and it may not even be for your class. It takes forever to find purple engrams, and longer to get an actual purple, however the purple versions of blue guns don't look different then the blue guns, and the blue guns don't look different then the green ones. They get a few more perks, but nothing special. Armor looks decent at this level however.

As for the orange stuff, I can only speak for the two I have: Bad JuJu and the titan orange helmet. In order to get orange stuff you need to do 1 of 3 things, all of which involve RNG:

1. Buy it from Xur's shop, and hope something you want is in Xur's shop. You can get strange Coins by doing the weekly heroic, or by random drops, or by your random engrams turning into them rather than a decent piece of kit. The RNG part of this is that Xur only comes by once a week, and only has 1 item for each class plus 1 weapon. So if you want something specific, chances are he won't have it.

2. Get lucky, then grind. You can get an orange bounty if you turn in a vanguard bounty, whether or not you get it is completely random chance. I got mine just turning in one bounty for vanguard, and I hardly ever do vanguard bounties. RNG takes effect again in this, giving you a choice of 3 bounties out of a larger pool, each for a different gun with wildly different objectives that you can't see up front. Mine had me do 26 strikes and get 10000 points of kills in crucible, where each kill counts as 25 points.

3. Get really lucky. At the end of every mission/pvp match you have a very small chance to get an orange. You also have a very small chance of getting an orange from a purple engram.

As for the actual guns/armor that I have:
Visually, Bad JuJu(A pulse rifle) looks cool on paper, but in practice it takes up almost a third of the screen and constantly flashes green for attention because of the green flames spurting out the front of its skull ornament. Those green flames' smoke also whiffs over your aiming reticule, blocking your targeting. It's just ridiculous.

Now, the question then is, is the actual gun good? Well, short answer: No, no it's not.

The Long answer is that the gun has a list of problems that make it incredibly inefficient out of the box:

- It's a pulse rifle that only has 15 shots, so you get a grand total of 5 shots out of the thing.

- Each shot does relatively little damage and the gun relies on its fire rate for dps, so, for example, in pvp in order to actually get a kill with it without having to reload its piddly magazine, you have to rely on headshots.

-The problem with relying on headshots is: the gun has very low stability. You cannot get 3 shots at any modest range to hit in the same place.

Now, the gun has a choice between higher damage shots and stability when its leveled up, so either of those could make the gun viable. There's also a perk further down the tree that instantly reloads the gun if you get a kill that could change things in pvp(but not in PvE against bosses). At best the gun will be modest when it's leveled up, as things stand.

My orange helmet, however, adds perks to my class, which is interesting from a loot perspective, it's just a shame you can only have one piece of orange armor/weapon equipped.

It's a solid 7.5, maybe with time a 7.8. There's just too many obnoxious elements to the game. For me PVP is exactly what Halo was. It's better than Halo 4 but it's essentially halo with ADS and some super abilities. It has all the hallmarks of the frustrating Halo experience:

-movement that's sluggish and unintuitive. everything is on a delay from controller to screen
-netcode that's terrible and consistently terrible
-balance issues with some cheap aspects of the game like melee and super abilities that have no counter
-barely enough ammo to fight more than 1 person at a time
-overpowered snipers
-terrible maps with awful sight lines that don't make sense for a FPS

It can still be rewarding when it works well, but when it doesn't it's the worst.

The only counter to supers is playing tactically, but even then its tough.

Don't agree with snipers. Not been one shotted by one yet (lines of sight encourage close and medium engagements as they should, otherwise everyone would be sniping).

I agree with the sluggishness, it feels poor next to COD in multiplayer. This game needs 60 FPS for multiplayer and a high tick rate I think its called.

Multiplayer will die when COD comes out.

I tend to feel the same - without any real evidence backing it up - but it wouldn't surprise me if the game wasn't finished on time, they put out what they could for the 9/9 release date and will rely on DLC to flesh out the game more. Not incompetence per se, but maybe just falling behind schedule. There are so many 'blurred out' doorways and passages in the game that suggest more content (or maybe just a really terrible way of blocking passage).

edit: What NullPointer said.

Would be nice to have something for being awesome in strikes even if it's not legendary gear =(.
For me, this is the game's single biggest misstep - even above the legendary engram catastrophe. It's evident Bungie have zero experience in designing around this type of gameplay system. Level 5 opponents drop the same gear with the same frequency as the level 24 opponents... so why bother with level 24 opponents? The player who went AFK and ended up 0-35 in The Crucible gets the same chance at the same gear as the player who went 35-0 in the same game... so why bother playing? In Strikes, Bosses don't drop loot... so why are they in the game?

Players grinding the treasure cave in the Cosmodrome have a better chance at getting good drops, than the co-ordinated players in the hardest Strike, or the best Crucible player in the world. It's broken logic. And combined with the legendary engram debacle, it doesn't take long before the loot system feels unrewarding and cheap. Considering the competition in the "loot game" category, it's almost unforgivable that Destiny should launch like this. Of course, it's not until you hit 20 and start loot hunting that it becomes an issue.

Not sure if serious?

-movement is fast and accurate
-netcode is ace for me (aside from when lizard squad does it's thing)
-more than enough ammo to put down 5 people. Unless you mean magazines, which I can't really take as a serious negetive
-overpowered snipers? really?
-AMAZING maps that make everyone fight for everything and gives you several paths of approach.

Seriously, I don't know what some people play these days...

Very serious. How long have you been playing shooters?

-movement is not fast. Halo has never been particularly fast but since Halo 3 they've made movement and overall feel of the game sluggish. It's too "simulated" vs something more smooth and fluid like modern warfare or Titanfall. Some people like this feel but i absolutely hate it. I feel like a retard on screen where my input doesn't correlate properly on screen. I find myself pressing hard on the gamepad a lot, i don't if it's out of frustration or subconsciously i feel if i press harder it will translate to faster movement on screen? lT"S LIKE I CAN"T GET THE GUY TO MOVE LIKE I WANT HIM TO FREAKING MOVE! ahhhh! lol

-netcode is for sure not ace. i'm going to assume this is not on Xbox Ones Azure right? It feels so terrible at times in PVP matches.

-yes, magazine. bungie has had this notion that limiting firing ammo is somehow a good thing. it's holy fuck obnoxious knowing that your clip size isn't sufficient enough to go into a battle confident you can turn the corner and drop another guy without reloading. again, they adopted this mentality with Halo 3. It's absurd that i have to constantly reload after almost every 1v1 encounter and prior to fighting someone else. It doesn't help that without any "perk" reloading and switching weapons is slower than most other shooters.

-like Halo, yes, snipers are crazy powerful. You can not out gun a sniper in this game from distance, not a chance in hell if he's competent.

-maps are amazing? I don't think so. Nothing sticks out about any of them. I don't even have a favorite or a least favorite, they all seem the same.

Have you watched the Destiny GDC talk with the two creative leads (writer and art)? The creative process outlined makes the final product look intentional and not the product of outside forces.

Stanton's quote that "the one thing I learned throughout this project is that the art director is almost always right" is what stuck with me from the video. It was said immediately after an anecdote about how a contribution that took a week's worth of work by the head writer was dismissed with two words by the art director. And given that Stanton quit two months latter, I think it is fair to say the real creative force behind the game had very little use for writers or narrative in general beyond the absolute minimum.

Well it looks like people really dont listen to reviews. I expected to find at least some second hand copies in the shops by now, sold my copy for 38 quid and a kid immediately wanted to buy it. Looks like marketing does work, sales will probably be high for a while in spite of its mediocrity.

I'm not a fan of Angry Joe, but I've watched his Destiny review and I think he's pretty much nailed it. I hope Bungie sit down and watch it, and think hard about releasing a ton of free content as quickly as possible. Otherwise I predict this game will be dead by the end of November

Content is the problem? Really? I think it has a lot of content actually. The problem for me is the games design. The people that argue that this isn't Halo is out of their minds. In terms of design this is exactly what Halo Reach was but with ADS. There's very little that is fresh about it.

I swear Bastion is one of the worst MP maps I have ever played. I hate everything about it.

All the maps are pretty mediocre actually.

Yes content is clearly a major problem. I give it a 7 out of 10, but let's not kid ourselves here. The content is severely lacking. There is zero story and every mission is a repeat. The game is basically 1 giant horde mode.

Very serious. How long have you been playing shooters?

Long enough to dislike Call of Duty's way of things, they take away using your brain in favor of reflexes. Not entirely, mind you, but the focus is on fast reflexes. I love it in Quake 3 to a degree, but not in CoD. Yes, a sniper will one shot you from a distance. I don't see the problem here. Except from the 2 maps with vehicles, every map is loaded with chalk points for maximum carnage and enough flanking opportunities to make you think before you shoot, but also be ready with your finger trigger. There are many features missing, but the core gameplay is amazing.

Or the majority of people are enjoying the game possibly?

Well plenty of people in the OT seem to be disagreeing on his points lol.

Which is honestly a bit weird to me. I'm not saying the game shouldn't or couldn't be enjoyed, I totally get it if someone even loves the game but come on, they're valid points.

Some people really like grindy and random. Imagine if this was your first taste of MMO loot style mechanics. You'd be crazy for it.

It could have been so much more.

although yea, this is true too

Dat joe review took all of my anger out lol. Come Master Chief collection and people who own an Xbox One will see what Bungie was really all about, not this half assed shit.

I dunno, people enjoy Candy Crush as well. I guess it's fine that they enjoy it, but it doesn't stop GAF from looking down on casual games and thinking that they're a waste of time.

No, it's not fine that they enjoy it. And a bit of respect towards GAF would be appreciated. It is, after all, the place closest to the ultimate Truth.

I watched Angry Joe's review and around 25:00 after the strike and he didn't get shit cracked me up. I just started laughing but I'm pretty sure if that happened to me I'd be having the same reaction.

I agree with most of his review though. While I can somewhat overlook some baffling decisions like the terrible mission design, how repetitive the game is, terrible boss encounters, not enough content and the way the game is structured (Why is the Orbit/Director mechanic even there? It doesn't really add anything to the game). I can't overlook the way loot works in this game. It's frustrating and quite terrible. The fact that better loot is needed to level up is frustrating when paired with the fact that the game rarely wants to reward you with loot. Every Strike and every named boss in this game should have guaranteed drops. I don't care what it is but give me something for spending 30 mins fighting bullet sponge bosses.

Bungie just gets everything wrong when it comes to loot. Yeah I know in Borderlands a shit ton of loot is dropped and most of them are trash but you're bound to still get something worthwhile when it throws that amount of loot at you. The problem I have with Destiny is it gives you a ton of trash while rarely giving you decent stuff. Like seriously how many freaking times am I gonna get a variation of Axiom Coven drops? That's just frustrating.

Also I know people say just do patrols, bounties and strikes to get you rep up so you can buy the gear you want and at that point I have to ask Why on Earth does this game have loot drops if I have to buy decent weapons? That's just dumb.

I'm having fun with the game, most of the complaints are valid but I don't find they detract from enjoyment of the game much.

I'm worn out on Diablo RoS big time so I don't see what's so superior about it. It can be just as frustrating if not more.

Joe is so goddamn right.

I kinda regret now i bought it but they have my money now so le sigh...i mean if this would happen in another loot game like Diablo 3 RoS the whole community will be pissed. The whole loot system looks broken and not giving you the satisfaction it gives unlike like i said D3 or even Borderlands for that matter. If this happend in D3 if you got a Legendary weapon and identified it after it was done and turned to a blue one i would be pissed and wouldn't make any sense.

the game has grown on me in a big way, but the lack of good storytelling is a still a flaw that bothers me. fuck grimoire cards, put that shit in the game itself!

Even you can't deny that Joe is one of the few intellectuals of the gaming community.

I agree with Joe's review though. Just find MMaRsu funny for raging at people because they don't agree with him and his awesome critique of the game.

This game blows dicks.

I've been eloquent enough in previous threads where I wrote out my complaints and nobody agreed with me and everybody jumped on me for critiquing Bungie.

"Why is no one taking me seriously?!" Maybe they just like the game regardless of the faults?

the game has grown on me in a big way, but the lack of good storytelling is a still a flaw that bothers me. fuck grimoire cards, put that shit in the game itself!

Agreed the grimoire cards suck this game would have fared much better if the story telling was in the actual game.

Angry Joe's review was basically perfect. Not sure what people in the OT are saying about it, but most of his points seem difficult to reasonably argue against.

Joes review is truth.

Cannot believe the faults of the game. If I have more fun exploiting the cave of treasure hack than the regular game proper:there is a problem with the game.

edit:unfortunately happy I got the game for free thanks to Amazon breaking my ghost edition.

Ah, I disagree respectfully. I've always found that manly rhetoric on the internet requires certain amount of backbone. We shouldn't tolerate all sorts of nonsense.

We shouldn't tolerate people having differing opinions and should be allowed to give shit to those that disagree? Wah? Get out of here junior.

Or it could possibly be the way you're talking about the game and reviews,

People are imbeciles if they don't agree with you or the Joe's review? Nice.

I just followed that quote back to the OT.. to be fair, it's missing some important context.

Angry Joe is an imbecile.

I'm not one to throw terms like "imbecile" around... but discounting Joe's entire review because "he's an imbecile" does seem pretty ridiculous to me. He made a ton a extremely valid points, many of them being amongst the closest I've seen to design choices being objectively wrong.

We shouldn't tolerate people having differing opinions and should be allowed to give shit to those that disagree? Wah? Get out of here junior.

Now, now, lad, don't put words into my mouth. I don't necessarily approve of such drastic measures yet I can't prevent myself of feeling a slight sense of admiration towards a man who says his opinions with passion. Gives hope to wimps such as myself.

A lot of it is fixable. Whether or not they want to appeal to people who don't want to grind is another problem though.

Purple engrams should only give purples of your class.
Strikes should guarantee a purple or orange depending on difficulty.
Lower the requirements for faction rep grinding.
