Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

All the charts of the MSI GTX 970 review on guru3d also include the Gigabyte GTX 970.

Cool. Good call. Looks like the Gigabyte is a hair better across the board. Like 1 fps factory. Only OC'd numbers is the firestrike demo where Gigabyte grabs 120 points over the MSI card.

So $10 difference makes it a real close call. I'd be half inclined to order both and just let whichever one comes in stock first ship to me and hope I can cancel the other order quick enough :)

It looks like it's time to finally upgrade my 6950...in February when I build a new PC when Witcher 3 comes out.

Bye bye Duo Core 2!

I guess UPS decided to skip my town today and go north two hours from where I live. Expected delivery bumped back a whole day. Hopefully I get a surprise after work, but I don't like that I paid 20 extra dollars to have the package be a day late. Oh well

Didn't they say DX11 hardware will fully support DX12?

They did say that all DX11 will support DX12, but it doesnt mean that some features wont be exclusive to the future hardware. Stuff like MFAA for example.
For first two years, all newer cards should have parity in terms of features.

I am not worried, I am just pandering if it is worth upgrading my R9 280x at this point. Probably not.
Dont think so, unless You get a good deal for selling Your 280x.

Any Dark Souls 2 DSR benchmarks for the 970? It will probably be the first game I fire up when I get the card on Wednesday.

The MSI one may not be 2.0. According to the specification on their website : Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @24 Hz.
Maybe it is a mistake.

Well that website is also suggesting that the max DVI resolution is 2048x1536 @ 60Hz. Which would be true for analog, but I don't see that being the case for digital...

yeah those 3 fans arte beast, its kinda expected though, 3 fans > 2 fans.
I think the 980 blower would be good for me.
has anyone did any OC with their 980 blower style cards?

I'm still sitting pretty with my 690, so if I'm gunna upgrade I wanna go for broke with the OC'ing and it seems like a good fit

It's always been like this. By having a graphics card with the latest hardware DX support it means it is future proof.

I know but normally it would just be the version number so you can say ''my card support up to DX11.3" or something, now it's "yeah it'll support DX12 but only these specific cards have hardware support for it", it's annoying.

I like that Gigabyte GTX 970 G1, but gatdamn, that card brings a whole new definition to BBC(ard). Newegg has it at 15.9 inches in length. That thing will not fit into my Rosewill R5 tower.

My cards should arrive Wednesday afternoon. I'm excited to get them in and running to see how loud they are, and to see what they can theoretically do until I can get my hands on a ROG Swift. Some PhysX and 3D vision titles I've not been able to fully enjoy will at least get me some new shininess in the interim.

no one else concerns about DX12 hardware support?

All of those new features are supported by Maxwell and Maxwell alone. The 970/980 is the only D3D 11.3 compliant hardware on the market, it is the most feature compliant DX 12 hardware on the market.

Kepler doesn't even fully support feature level 11.1, so this is a big leap forward in Nvidia's DX 12 support.

No one knows when and if feature levels beyond 11.3 will be introduced and its impossible to say whether Maxwell will support them but rest assured if you buy a 970 or 980 today you're buying a card with the best DX12 support on the market.

Anybody seen benchmarks that compare these to a 680 at 1080p? Everywhere I look seems to focus on 3k and 4k. I'd like to get my games running at 120fps/1080p before we even think about moving to crazy high resolutions.

Not much you can do when the API isn't complete. You're buying a GPU released more than a year before the first DX12 titles are due to appear.
The GPU segment moves very fast. If full DX12 hardware support is a must for you, you have two choices:
- By a GPU now, have 6-8 months of fun with it, sell it on for the latest tech.
- Wait.

I read that DX 12 will be somewhat like Mantle in that it won't suit all game projects or developers. I think most games will be written against DX 11.3. They will co-exist with one-another.

Have my SLI GTX 970 Strix. Every game is smooth, even Metro with x3 SSAA.
I still get dips as low as 38FPS in Planetside 2, telling me it's my CPU (I have a 4790K). Seriously fuck that game.

The Super Resolution is nice on Diablo 3 and Dota 2 but it messes up with Steam overlay and can't see shit anymore so I went back to 1080P for all my games and just crank the graphics and AA. Eagerly anticipating MFAA and better drivers :)

For first two years, all newer cards should have parity in terms of features.

Well all the major architectures on the market currently (Kepler, GCN and Maxwell) have different feature level support.

GCN = 11.2
Kepler = 11 (partial 11.1 support)
Maxwell = 11.3

So no, when DirectX12 hits there won't be parity in the level of support across different architectures.

Is it going to be a pretty massive leap going from Gigabyte R9 270x to a 970? I get pretty good frames in a lot of games already, but I do believe I am cpu bottlenecked in some games like Crysis 3 since I have an i3 4130.

Suppose I wanted to SLI two Gigabyte 970s. Is my 750w enough?

Triple SLI would work without a problem. Assuming your psu isn't cheap rubbish.

Theoretically you could get between 50 to 100% more frame depending on the game but yeah, a dualcore will limit you. Don't know if there are any recent articles with benchmarks to see what games are affected how severly.

Ohhh, please post more impressions as I've ordered Strix as well. How quiet is it? Was it easy to install? Did it come with a SLI cable?

I am unfamiliar with the fan profile setting. Is there a good guide to setting one up?

I recommend installing MSI Afterburner. It's pretty easy to set a good profile there. As every PC is different, it is difficult to give any definite recommendations. The problem is that the auto profiles that come with the cards always suck. Your fan speed will change constantly and have the tendency to be too high. To avoid this I am using a threshold system instead of a curve. Here is my current version for reference, but you really should try to find something you are comfortable with in your PC.

To monitor things in game, you should also use the overlay that comes with Riva Tuner (Included with Afterburner). It gives vital info like GPU temp and fan speed, so you can see directly if the profile is good or not. Then you can back out of the game and make small adjustments.

I am using SLI, so people with single cards should be able to tone things down further.
With this profile my card never goes beyond 50% fan speed and 55 is the "emergency" setting. The most heat intensive game for me is Far Cry 3 without V-Sync max settings. BF4 is also good, but FC3 really seems to take the cake in terms of temps. I am getting something like 74-75° max there with this profile on one card. (Traditionally the other card is 2-3 degrees colder).

Btw, the yellow line at the bottom is the current low set by EVGA. They are working on a BIOS update that will reduce this further according to support.

For any Canadians interested, NCIX just charged me for my MSI 980 preorder.

According to their website that means they have an ETA known, but when I called the clueless sounding person who answered had no idea when.

I'm talking software support and only GCN/Maxwell.
