ComicsGAF, help me out here. What should I know before reading Crisis on Infinite Earths?

I've really only read the DC Elseworld/spinoff stuff (Justice, Red Son, Birthright, Kingdom Come) so far, but now that I was able to get the Infinite Crisis omnibus, I figured it was time to read the mainline DC stuff.

So...yeah. There's multiple Superman/Batman/WW? Multiple Earths? I just want a little heads up so that I'm not confused.

thanks!

There's not really that much. It's an "infinite multiverse" with the main focus on Earth 1 (The main DC earth at the time) Earth 2 (The golden age heroes), Earth 3 (Everyone is a tosser) and the anitmatter universe. I'd just read it and if you have any questions ask. It's pretty straightforward

The 'problem' with Crisis is that it' super old, so all the things it's referencing are pretty much lost to the sands of time. The title "Crisis on Infinite Earths" should clue you in to the existence of a multiverse. I guess the 'big' earths to know about would be Earth 2 (grown up versions of the mainstream characters, superman has grey temples, Batman and Catwoman are married), Earth 3 (evil), Earth X (Nazis).

But really I wouldn't sweat it. Just enjoy the super super dense storytelling and let the 60% you don't get wash over you like so much gibberish. If you've read Infinite Crisis (the sequel, 20 years later) then you'll know some of the characters already.

disclaimer - I've never been able to read it all the way through, it's just too much for me and I don't think the story itself is very good.

Regarding this:

WTF Marvel! A few days ago my first month of subscription to Marvel Unlimited expired and it automatically renewed, charging me 9.99$. So far, so good.
Later that day I opened the app and it turns out I wasn't a subscriber anymore. So I mailed onlinesupport@marvel.com and got no answer to this day. The next day I tweeted them at @marvelsupport. Still no answer.
I know it was the weekend but what the hel, you don't keep open your customer service for a paid subscription service just because it's the weekend (I mean since friday)? Are we back to the 80s or something? Incredible.

Sorry for the rant but I planned on reading a lot on this weekend and I couldn't even though I paid for it. WTF Marvel indeed. Really poor customer service, adding up to the fact that the app itself is unbearable and the only good think about it is the sheer amount of comics I can read, as a total comics noob, for a good price.

Problem solved, online support replied yesterday and re-activated my subscription. Pretty bummed about the lost weekend of catching up and the fact that they didn't think about giving me 3 extra days of subscription. They really have a poor customer service imho, but I hope it will improve with time. It's ok to manage it mainly via twitter (everyone is doing it), just don't take the weekend free I guess.

Thanks everyone, especially GAMEPROFF, I'll definitely follow your advice next time ;)

Anybody here read the Sons of Anarchy comics?

I'm a fan of the series and saw the first TPB comes out this week. Not sure if want.
I was getting it when it first came out. Issues #1-6 were actually pretty good (first story arc). Then the creative team changed and the letterer in the previous six issues became the writer and I just didn't care for it anymore and dropped it.
I'd say grab the TPB (#1-6)though if you like SOA. I don't follow the show but I liked the book.

I agree! Too bad it's hard for me to find at any of the comic shops nearby. Each gets like 1-2 issues and that's it, so I usually have to wait 2-3 weeks for an extra copy to be shipped.

It's so worth it though.

Was working on the October OT this morning, and I can tell you there's still a month of aftermath issues on the way.

But candy corn is shit..

My GF and I love candy corn, that stuff is awesome.

I'd say that it's at least worth trying, if you their enjoy their past body of work. The book established an irreverent tone early one, and did (and continues to do) some unexpected things with its cast to keep you on your toes; but, the opening arc has also kind of dragged at certain points too. With that story drawing to a close soon though, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the new heroes and villains joining the cast, and seeing how the League continues to mature. When these heroes were first introduced, they were mostly behaving like unruly children; now, they're starting to act slightly more like heroes and come together, but it's an uneven process. There's also something appealing about the idea that this future (and now this universe, removed completely from the New52 continuity) wholly belongs to Giffen, DeMatteis and Porter, and is theirs to play with.

Thanks! I'm not sure how I missed your reply earlier, but I appreciate it, and will definitely check it out. I agree that the separation from rest of Nu52 should help.

I'd like to add that I thought the villains were by far the most interesting parts of the series so far. Especially Locus. She's a delight. The only hero I've truly enjoyed has been Green Lantern. The rest are insufferable.

Also, it was obvious well before the announcement that the series was divorced from any in continuity connection.

So what did ComicGAF think of Gotham? I thought it was pretty cool. A few Arrow quality cheesy moments but overall, a fun start.

I only watched the first 20 minutes of it,, Bears game was on.
It started out pretty good, I don't watch very many shows besides sports or real life type crap. But I liked it, slightly cheesy yes but we shall see.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahawhy

I remember how terrible it was when I bought it weekly but my mind is rejecting the notion that it could be that bad. I keep saying "No. It was god awful" but my brain goes. "Don't care. You're still buying it"

When it first came out by the time I'd realised that like Future's End it wasn't going to get any better I was close enough to the end that I carried on.

It makes Future's End look like actual literature as far as I remember. I used to called it Comedown
(or Cuntdown depending on my mood)
Save yourself! Please.

Have you read all of DC One Million? I advise getting that instead.

Weekly Future's End, wow this book just continues to go nowhere. The most decompressed.......

Bendis "shit, you mean I can write for the omnibus!?"

I'm staying with FE only because it gives me something to mock on a weekly basis. So so so bad. I laughed out loud at the last page of last week's issue, a 'twist' so obvious that I saw it coming as soon as I turned the page, meaning the dialogue was entirely optional.

To the book's credit, it is one of those comics with exceptional visual storytelling that doesn't need words to convey how NOTHING IS HAPPENING AT ALL.

I think the Cadmus plot is my favourite because it gave the artists an excuse to draw featureless white labs for about 200 pages.

~10 issues to set up the robbery? Most of which was planned in Tim's bar? (gotta keep the use of different sets down for budgetary reasons of course). Mr Terrific being a Terrific Twat? Fifty Sue, the character sensation of 2014!

L My eFfing A Off

But... what does that have to do with anything that is happening?

I've only read the first issue (tradewaiter) but isn't there something to do with their powers and counting off? I seem to remember something similar in the 1920s era in the first issue?

I could well be entirely spectacularly wrong here though.

I dropped Wicked + Divine. Young Avengers had focus and direction to go along with the art and quirky/pop characters and feel. W+D hasn't since the first issue.

It happen in the very same issue

like...literally one page back

its a non-Grant Morrison fan thing, I guess

But that doesn't explain anything. They get their power from saying one two three four in English even if they are a non-anglo Saxon God/dess? I'm not trying to rip on anything I legit don't get it. Is it just a "We're the music comic people" thing?

But anyways. I'm close to dropping it. It's going nowhere slowly.

I heard they have trouble processing metaphor as well ;)

I like Futures End, but mainly because I jumped on like 2 weeks ago and read most of it in one go. The storytelling works a lot better that way. Also, Frankenstein.

The important question is how many issues is Dick going to have to suffer blue balls until his handler breaks protocol and gives him some relief?

There were so many suggestive words in that sentence I surprised myself.

Flirting by issue 4

Shagging by issue 5 me thinks

Thanks! It'll help out when I start reading CoIE today at lunch.

I haven't read my Infinite Crisis omnibus yet. (I want to read the DC big events in order) So, I'm in the dark with regards to how the DCU is structured.

Has anyone read Leaving Megalopolis yet? I read it last night and really enjoyed it. Too short though. Are they planning more volumes?

Jedeye are you actually reading it? And if so, why?

As I explained a little upthread, it's so shitty that I think I might enjoy it pound for pound more than most people who actually 'enjoy' it (if such a thing is even possible). It's one of the worst comics I've ever read, I feel it is my duty to read it and shit on it whenever possible.

I'm very much looking forward to a twist that I don't see coming half a mile off. I really like it when they use a splash page to tell us something asinine in a very undynamic fashion (that Brother Eye two page splash a few issues back literally had me LOLing). And Brother Eye himself, such a menacing villain, right? Needs more Eye puns though, I'm missing those. 20 issues in, I still have no idea wha gwan on Cadmus island, other than there are multiple secret levels (ooooooo) and Fifty Sue of course. Fifty Sue is the best, I like how she's all "fuck tha police!!" but also playful and silly, that's a great character right there. And I love how this is... what, the third or fourth story this decade to tell me "Brainiac isn't what you think he is, he's MORE!!1!" hahahaha I love it.

Low-imagination-budget comics, such a revolutionary idea.

Three things that are good about it, go!

1. Frankenstein has Hawkman's arm.
2. Robin is a guy with dreadlocks who, for the first time in Robin history, looks like someone who could win a fight.
3. Grifter is a super creepy dude who becomes a punchline. Lol 90s Image.
4. OMAC!
5. "You legally changed your name to Key. Huh."
6. Constantine vs. Dr. Fate, with his assistant knocking out all the people who Nabu keeps summoning to put the helmet on.
7. Crazy pumped up Bane Barbara Gordon

Also, lots of the costume/character designs are really cool - Supes, Firestorm, etc.

Three of those were tie in only, no dice. They Key line was funny, I'll give you that. You're right on Grifter too, his inclusion is almost a joke at the expense of the 90s. I love his gritty internal monologue, so un-ironic.

Actually, this whole series is tonally a bit like 90s video game adverts. First character to wear a backwards cap and say "radical!" becomes a legend.

I'm sure my experience was really different for having read it in one go. The bite-size story beats became addictive, making me want to get to the next story to see what happens, and the pace of the story didn't feel as drawn out because there are so many threads. If I'd been reading it week to week I can see how the lack off frequent payoffs would feel a bit more aimless.
