Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Pal just finished his benchmark runs with his 980s

For comparison, this is my run on the 780Ti Classified Kingpin

The 6 core proc definitely inflates his score a bit, but still. Damn.

And now you can get the same performance as that 780Ti for half the price. The 970 really is the best value we've had in a while.

Yup, it certainly is amazing value. Smart move by Nvidia. They knew they had to do this to sell people on the old process with a relatively small performance jump. At that price though this means going straight for AMD's throat. They are gonna sell so many of those cards... They are certainly completely sould out here.

Given the archictectural advantages of the 970, I would say get it instead. Being able to take advantage of its 11.2 and 1.3 dx11 support) will be nice when the time comes.

The 1 or 2% difference is unnoticable with a nice overclock.

Don't forget the extra 1GB of memory as that could prove very important in the next couple of years.

If you want longevity out of your GPU then the 970 is the obvious choice.

Thx for the feedback. I knew it was OC friendly but i wasn't sure what was the cost temp and noise wise.
Sounds better and better.

You should be able to comfortably get it to 1500mhz and keep it quiet and cool. I haven't actually tried to go above 1542 yet so I'm not sure just how high it can go. Stock boost core clock for me is 1380mhz.

Super pleased with this card. Hell of a value.

My two Palit GTX970s have just arrived.

Very quiet blowers on stock clocks (they're the same as my old PNY 670 blowers), even when running Valley benchmark on Ultra. Max temps were around low 70s and averaging 90-110 fps throughout the whole thing.

Will install the fan controller and overclock software soon and see what happens...

Nice to see some reports on the blower coolers as they've been mostly ignored in the reviews. Sounds like a good option for SLI.

I'm very interested in purchasing two Palit 970's this evening after a long stint with AMD/ATI, my last Nvidia card was a 7000 series. Do they include the SLI bridges as standard in the box?

Reserved an ASUS STRIX 970 from Memory Express up here in Canadaland, but will have to wait until beginning of October for them to arrive. SIGH, the wait! arhgh

One thing I have to say, is massive thanks to my wife who is taking tomorrow afternoon off to be home to sign for my new graphics cards when they arrive, since I was unable to get the time off myself.

I am one very lucky guy.
Holy shit, I've gotta get me one of those.

Just to play LoL.

Actually, I have no idea what he plays, I just thought it would be funny if that's what he played.
Competitive FPS, but steps in the casual realm of BF/CoD type games. He plays MMOs on the side every now and then too.

Right now, mostly Dirty Bomb.
sheeit, and a i7 5960X on top of that. 2 grands in silicon.
3DMark error, it's a 5930K. Neither of us can figure out why it's detecting a 5960X.

I'm looking around and the 970 price tag is really throwing everything for a loop.

I'm looking at the average costs of Nvidia's 770, 780 and AMD's 280x,290, 290X series....and it just all goes around to the thought "I might as well buy the 970 for a little more, or a lot less." Especially compared to AMD's latter.

It seriously undercuts the hell out all those cards, wow.

Mm. Still torn between MSI and Gigabyte cards. Just found a review that says I can fit a 13" card in my Corsair 650D with the top hard drive cage removed. So I would be ok with the Gigabyte if I opted to go that direction.

However if I ever decided on going small form factor I'd be in trouble.

I have to wait until Oct to order anyways. I get 5% cash back from Amazon in Oct so why not wait one week to save ~$20. I'll order one from Amazon and they'll just ship it to me when it comes in. At this rate I'd expect middle of October.

You can fit any card in the 650D with the top cage removed (which you should do anyway for airflow). I put a 690 in my 600T no prob (same interior).

DAMN! That SLI performance is amazing.

Does a SLI configuration really yield that much extra performance? That is like almost double.

Usually SLI give you like a 60% boost in performance.

Nice. Good to know. My current 660ti is only 10.5" so I know that's a comfortable size. I'm pretty sure I removed the extra hard drive cage when I was replacing fans for airflow anyways.

Should have my 970 by tomorrow. Looking forward to trying some games with officially supported down sampling. Especially with the extra 2GB of RAM it has over my current card.

1) It's a synthetic benchmark, and not indicative of gaming performance.

2) It's a 5930K proc at 4.5 GHz which further increases the score.

To give you an idea:

More here.

3x ROG swifts, trying to push 7680x1440 and keep over 100fps.
Not sure if you've played around with 4-way before, but it's a nightmare almost always. Great for benchmarking, not so much for playing games.

It's like sex. With a single partner, you can just go with things naturally. With two, it's pretty rad and a special thing, but starts to get a little complicated. With three, you're able to do things you couldn't imagine otherwise, but you have to put thought into it. With four, you just get overwhelmed.

Just saw this on reddit, not sure how accurate it is. But I'm getting a little buyer's remorse after picking up the 970. Should I have really just waited?

Of course, the argument goes if you wait for the next best thing you'll wait forever. The problem is, nVidia - like Intel follows a "Tick-Tock" release cycle. Maxwell/900 Series is a "Tock" and while some bigger than usual improvements for a tock have been made (e.g. smaller die/better thermals, and CUDA optimization + DX12) it's not a major architectural change with massive improvements and new features.....

If you've gotten by three years with the 570's, and can tough it out one more year for Nvidia "Tick" cycle with Pascal, it might be more worth your cash....Not to say Maxwell/900 series isn't GREAT it is and an improvement of the 500 series for sure; but again if your cruising through games now, maybe take a breather.

This Maxwell release, lost Unified Virtual Memory to PASCAL (1000 series), and basically only has a die shrink (thermals), CUDA optimization and DX12.

Pascal will have all of the above PLUS unified virtual memory, stacked DRAM and NVlink. These are GAME CHANGING, large architecture defining changes. UVM (Unified Virtual Memory) and Stacked DRAM are the future and will bring MASSIVE performance improvements, and NVLInk sounds amazing for reducing the bottlenecks between CPU/GPU.

The first paragraph is inaccurate, which is the premise that needs to be true for the accompanying advice to be accurate.

NVIDIA is not on a tick-tock release schedule.

If you need the performance now, no. There will always be better stuff coming, just take the plunge when you need it.

You can always sell the card and upgrade to the new one for a smaller cost if you then feel like the extra performance is worth it.

Uhh, don't know how possible that will be with Pascal.

I don't think Nvidia would leave the entire PCI Express market with nothing, but we'll see. Maybe they'll stick this onto a card with a PCIe bridge or something.

Could explain why the 970 is at such a competitive price point. That said, I don't believe we'll ever see "massive improvement" in a single generation again, it's pretty clear the development just isn't working that way any more.

Well, whatever they decide to make you will still be able to upgrade to it. Can't sell something people can't use. :P

hmmm seems like a GPU upgrade might be in order (7850 you have done well *salutes*)...

LOL this is great.
