Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor | Review Thread - Welcome to Middle Earf

I dont subscribe to reviews, but I admit, this response is surprising. Not because I expected the game to suck (I've been looking forward to it for a loooong time now), but because of the general cynicism surrounding games these days, from both the gaming media, and the community. I was beginning to think that nobody enjoyed games anymore, especially the press, who's jobs revolve around games ( and as someone who has worked in the gaming industry for 10+ years, I can say it gets fucking exhausting).

Seeing people genuinely enjoying a game that looked promising from the get go, is nice. I've had mine preordered for a bit, cancelled the preorder because of budget concerns, then preordered it again when my budget freed up. Really looking forward to Tuesday.

Bayonetta 2 GOTY? ha ha ha
Regardless of the quality of Bayonetta 2 (which is supposedly better than the first), it still comes with a definitive version of GOTY 2009.

Bayonetta 2 will easily be the best $60 action game fans will spend this year. Now I need to think about getting a Wii U...

Three weeks are more than enough to visit the solar system, it seems.

Not criticising you but i will never understand why review copies are sent with gifts like that, something I'm sure fans of the mythology and game would of liked to have purchased.

It's not difficult to undersand the rationale begind these goodies.

I understand that, I'm talking about keeping them exclusive to the media and reviewers. Some of the special editions for press and public are night and day at times.

Such a tought decision. I think I'll wait for the reviews of Evil Within and then make a decision.

When it comes down to it, open-world action/adventure games are a dime a dozen.
If you care about new IP, veteran Japanese game developers, and a dying (dead) genre, then support The Evil Within.

The Evil Within has a lot more riding on its success, to be fair.

I'm getting both of these games on day 1, because they both look like two of the best games of the year and I can afford it, but my bias is clear. ;)

the case i can make for lotr:som is the innovative nemesis system. evil within, while looking to be a true survival horror game, is just another survival horror game, and i don't say that as a knock against it if you get what i'm saying.

but i still understand and you cant go wrong with either

Some of those goodies must be too expensive to mass produce and include in a bundle with a reasonable MSRP.

Woooow. I was expecting a solid 65 on Metacritic, game looks pretty generic. Glad there's something to it for the people looking forward to it, though.

Wow great scores, this game was totally off my radar but I think I'll have to.....

Wait, what?

Well, I assume that, like CoD getting 9s because of it's MP and not it's 4 hour campaign, maybe this game is getting these scores because of everything else despite it's "dull campaign".

The Polygon review gives a couple of examples of what makes this game stand out:

In another instance, I became overwhelmed and ran away from a berserker named Ratanak the Thunderer. Every time Ratanak and I crossed paths afterward, he was certain to remind me of my cowardice. He even developed a trait that made him more likely to hunt me down of his own volition, which led him to popping up at the worst times, trying to impede my progress mid-mission. It would have been frustrating if it wasn't so damn cool.

In one of my most memorable moments from the game, I was tracking down Maku the Gluttonous, bodyguard to one of the local warchiefs. II found him near a bridge, already fighting. It turns out Maku fancied himself as something of a hunter and decided to track down a Graug, a massive troll-like creature. Sadly for him, he took on this task solo. While I watched from the bushes, this Graug crushed my target, taking Maku out of the picture so that I could focus my attention on the warchief he protected. This kind of randomly generated story is not something I expect from narrative-driven games, and it makes Shadow of Mordor a special experience.

Again, these are just randomly generated orcs and events that reacted to his actions. It is going to be different on every play through and will react to you accordingly. Even the orcs themselves will be different.

My impression of the reviews basically comes down to this:

If they fucked up the Nemesis system, the entire game would have fallen apart.

But they nailed the Nemesis system, so the game is awesome.

The Nemesis system sounds revolutionary for open world games. I hope that, going forward, this system can be applied to more open world games in more diverse genres.

It seems like it really does elevate Mordor to more than just a cookie cutter, standard open world game. I can see this game generating a lot of water cooler moments for people.

Also, I'm kind of surprised at the reactions to the positive reactions. Monolith has a pretty solid, respectable track record. I've been a fan since F.E.A.R blew me away years ago, so my expectations for Mordor were that it would at least be fun.

Pleased for Monolith, but personally I'll be hesitating on picking this up since the reviews are all confirming the specific deal-breaker things that I was worried about. I can't get behind another copy-paste gameplay open world title. I'll give it a week and then check in on the wider consensus for stuff like the quality of the story or how fun the emergent stuff is. Hopefully these aspects are strong enough to dilute (or drive through) the repetitive gameplay.

If I didn't have an upcoming PS4 purchase in February due to Bloodborne, I would go out and buy a WiiU right now.

From an outsider perspective, it has the best current-gen lineup by a wide margin.

Just pre-ordered today on GMG.

Wow. I may have to put this on my wish list (too much on my plate at the moment).

The survival horror is a dying genre as you said, and that alone is what makes me so hungry for the Evil Within. The game truly gives me that vibe of a survival horror game from their golden age. And plus, it's a new IP what males it evento more appealing.

But I'm such a LOTR fanboy, and I can't even remember the last time a good game came out of the series.

Tough, tough decision.

Yeah, this nemesis system looks so good. I can't believe they really did something really amazing in a LOTR game after so long.

Day 1 baby. Now which platform to buy it for? Xone or ps4?

The likely hierarchy is PC>PS4>XBO with the PC having a large lead.

This is based on some assumptions, but Monolith hasn't sent out review code for the XBO version and are still nailing resolution and frame rate for the consoles.

I kind of doubt it based on Warner Brothers marketing deals with Sony, but are there any impressions out there of the game's performance on xbox one? The reviews have convinced me that the game is worth getting, I just want to know if it performs well (constant 30 fps, don't care about resolution, etc.).

Wow. Blown away by these scores.

It's a nice change of pace - seeing a publisher and developer so confident in their game, they allow for an early embargo.

It dropped 1 metacritic point while I slept.

Pre order cancelled.
I haven't pre ordered yet and am working till the bitter end for Playfire money

something like this ?

This would be perfect if it had the Ghost from Destiny hung from his belt like a trophy.

Just having a bit of fun, no one jump down my throat.

Glad to hear all the positive reviews here, not a LOTR fan but I will be picking this up next week for my One. Goes to show that good gameplay and systems go a long way and can intrigue players that aren't necessarily fans of a given franchise. Pumped!
