Eh, I'm fine with a list primarly focused on older comics. Apart from encompassing decades of stories, giving it a huge advantage, I often find those "significant" moments to be much more effective than the ones today, since they didn't happen every six months.

Considering some of the moments are Vision joining the Avengers, Kitty calling Prof X a jerk, and every other page of Born Again, I can think of some to throw in there. Future Franklin's "To Me, My Galactus" moment in Hickman's FF. Nova finishing off Annihilus in Annihilation. Fantomex killing kid Apocalypse in the initial Uncanny X-Force story arc.

You can't read it here but Hank's saying "your turn" in the last panel.

even after all this time i still dunno what kind of shit she's gonna do wasp-size to his body

And this is an odd problem I am having. Sometimes I can't figure out who the text bubbles belong to. That could be Tony, Spiderman, Maria Hill or Hawkeye.

Bendis text bubbles tend to be interchangable, which I think is the biggest failing of a team book. Characters have to have distinct personalities that stand out from the other characters, especially with page counts getting divided between members. Claremont's Uncanny X-Men had is pretty overbaked by modern standards with the wordy dialog and the accent he would build in, but its damn effective. Storm's "Be that as it may, we cannot stay in this building any longer!" doesn't sound like Wolverine's "Quit yappin' bub, the whole flamin' building's coming down!" doesn't sound like Rogue, "Ah hate to interrupt ya'll, but this whole place is quakin'!" doesn't sound like Nightcrawler's "Pardon me Mein Freund, but might we take this stimulating conversation to a less dangerous environment?". Its exaggerated, but the superhero team book is an exaggerated form. The great ones(Suicide Squad, Secret Six, the good Fantastic Four comics, Morrison/Case Doom Patrol, Copra, etc) can practically take out the visuals, look at the dialog bubbles, and you know who's talking because of the voice that's been defined for them. Hell even We3 has distinct characterization for each member, and that's all "ST1111NK BOSS!!11" and "uh oh".

I remember reading one Rick Remender interview, he said for Uncanny X-Force he would have a hundred different topics, like favorite pizza toppings or abortion, and then write how each of his character would respond. I thought that was a fun exercise to get in the head of his cast, how they would talk, how they feel about things compared to others, and that's where the interesting team dynamics come from. That's how you get the drama within the team when you can talk about the consequences and morality of a self-appointed hit squad when everyone has clear, defined voices and motivations colliding with each other.

So I'm back from LBCC!
I got a little sick a couple days ago, which is a shame since I was that kind of vaguely all-over sore and tired the whole day, but luckily it didn't bother me too much.
So overall, it was a lot of fun! It wasn't too busy at all which was awesome (for example, you could pretty much walk right up to any of the artist's tables and just chat with them/check out their stuff).
I did a lot of just walking around on the booths, checking out the stuff people were selling and chatting a bit with the really friendly people at the different booths.

Some highlights of the day:

Met Mike Mignola and had him sign Next Men #21 and Hellboy LE vol. 1.
It may seem a little silly, but I was pretty nervous about meeting him since he's my favorite of all time, so I didn't really manage to chat with him at all, but he seemed like a nice guy. He also didn't have any stuff I wanted to buy, which was a shame. Just the same $50 prints that are on his website that I'm not too crazy about (at least for $50).
Photo

I met Chris Burnham and chatted with him a bit. He had a bunch of original art available for purchase and it was really cool to look through, but it was mega expensive.
Photo (with bonus Deadpool photobomb)

I met Jeff Stokely (artist on Six Gun Gorilla). He was a super cool guy. I chatted with him for a bit and he told me that he's working on another creator-owned project with Simon Spurrier!
Photo
He also drew a gorilla sketch in my SGG copy for free. I also want to mention that his sketches on matte paper were insanely good for just quick sketches. The one I got wasn't as detailed since it was on glossy paper, but that guy is great at drawing.
And the other sketch in the photo was this guy whose name I can't remember who was at the same table as him doing free head sketches. I told him to draw whatever he wanted and he gave me this awesome sketch.
Photo

I also met Laura Allred (but Mike was off at the Reddit booth doing an AMA) right before I left. They had been away from their booth for pretty much the whole day, so I was happy to at least see one of the two Allreds at the end.

Oh, and I'm pretty ashamed about this, but I didn't spend any money at all. The artists I was most excited about didn't really have anything I was too interested in, and I didn't really feel like buying any books since I could just order them on IST. The good news is that I was anticipating spending about $200, but since I didn't spend any, I'll probably be making a nice big IST order sometime soon.

I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but yeah, it was a great experience! I'll definitely try to make it next year as well.

Have fun, hope you wear some deo

Obviously I did. :P
It was actually not hot or sweaty at all. In fact, in the panels it was freezing.

Don't forget to talk to DC stars about me.. Yeah? You can mention ComicsGAF too.

Enjoy yourself

I would've talked to them about you, but I'm sure they already know all about you and get enough Messi chat every day.
Also, I saw like twenty Harley cosplays and thought of you. You would've gone crazy.

Have fun Kipp! Don't forget to spoil us with pictures :)

Thanks! I probably should've taken more pictures, but oh well. There's always next time!

Have fun! Attending conventions for the first time always felt daunting. So many things to do and so many things to see. The one thing that ALWAYS happens to me is when I read or talk to others regarding their experience at a Con I just went to and there are things that I miss out on, I think to myself "damn, I wasn't doing anything during that time frame and I could have gone to see that or buy it."

My city is having our first ever comic convention in mid-October. I'm not sure how the attendance will be but I'll probably just go there for one day. Some of the special guests that'll be there: Kerrigan Mahan (voice of Goldar from Power Rangers), Blake Foster (Blue Ranger from Power Rangers Turbo), Yanick Paquette (DC artist), Khoi Pham (Marvel artist) and a few others. I'm mostly just interested in filling up my convention sketchbook. :]

Thanks! And at the moment I feel like I did everything I wanted to do, so hopefully I don't learn of something that happened that I totally missed out on. Haha

And have fun at your city's first comic convention!

DC gonna do a Secret Six reprint anytime soon?

This?

Listen I see Amanda Conner and Jimmys table beside Mike Mignola. Please tell me you took your opportunity to talk with them. I don't think I could hold it together if I met Jimmy and Amanda. I'm not good with that kind of stuff. I get nervous really easily.

The answer is no isn't it :(

Glad you had a fun time at the con though and your sketches are awesome. Also good job getting the Spurrier hot scoops.

DC's knocking it out of the park with their reprints lately; Jon Ostrander's Spectre and Martian Manhunter, a new printing of Secret Six, lots of new omnibuses like DC One Million, It's great.

What are some stories you want collected? I'd kill for some of DC's 90's output, like a Mark Waid Flash omnibus series, a complete Young Heroes in Love, volume 2 of Resurrection Man, Impulse, Young Justice, Ron Marz Green Lantern, and Jon Ostrander's Suicide Squad.

The out of print Gotham City Sirens is getting a reprint in November too. Can't wait for that. Love that series.

I'd love a reprint of Dini's Zatanna all in one book.

Oh my goodness. I have no idea how I didn't see that booth there. I probably walked past it five times. It simply didn't register in my brain. I even thought to myself at one point in the day "I wonder why I haven't seen the Conner and Palmiotti booth. I know they're here somewhere, they even have a panel."
That is seriously bizarre. I deeply apologize, Messi. You know I would've gotten a photo with them just for you.
(Also, is Conner even right there in the background of my photo? I'm ashamed.)

And thanks!

Hope the LBCC visit was inspiring brah.

You bet.

Looks like you had an awesome time, Kipp! Love the pictures.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them!

No worries man. There is always next time. I just wonder if Amanda would have done one of her quick sketches for you. That would have been cool.

I'm not sure if that is her in the background. Not a great angle of the booth. Pretty funny how you missed it but I'm sure the whole con thing is overwhelming.

First book comes out October 22nd, actually.

Oh look at me I am Freeza, I know all the dates.

:D the cover of that new print is not good.

Didn't take long for what Bii said to come true. D:

But yeah, I know exactly where that was and I know for a fact I walked right past it at least three times. My eyes must've just been focused on the Mignola and Allred booths (I think the Allred booth was directly across). That is just mind-boggling that I completely missed it.

I still can't believe we're getting fucking Sub-Diego.

Finished the first Prophet trade....i don't know about this one. It started out as a great fantasy/sci-fi/adventure book with the whole world being alive, some fantastic Graham artwork, but after issue #3 it the urgency went away and then in issue #6 things got crazy but felt disjointed, like i was reading a different volume of the series.

Yep. Exactly how I felt.
Whenever I get around to reading volumes 2 and 3, I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, Prophet gets pretty abstract after the second trade. I wanted to keep liking it, but I just don't get it anymore.

The main reason i got back into Prophet vol 1 after a bit of a delay was due to almost purchasing vol 3 in an IST order despite also having vol 2 unread on my shelf. Rarely do i do sensible things when it comes to comics, but I actually made myself read a book.

I don't think that's her. Might just be someone helping her with her booth.

Kipp's the only person who can go to a comic convention and find a way to not spend money

So true.

After playing Destiny with with Harrier and Zombine, which was a blast. Zombine is the truth! Ok back to what I was saying. After playing Destiny, I had arts and craft time. I bought a styrofoam head and painted the eyes and exposed muscle to display the Joker mask. Price of the set minus the book plus the price of the head equals about $25. Not bad I must say!

Greg Capullo retweeted this.

destiny talk....joker mask.....

Nah i can't do this.

Ok........after I made the Joker mask display, I read the rest of the JSA Omnibus! Finally, it is done! It was full of excellent team stories. The JSA/JLA story was epic! I will admit though, as good as it was, it did wear a bit thin by the end. I was getting fatigued by the same characters basically doing the same thing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, just 1450 pages is a lot! We say some books read better in trade, I would have rather read this month to month.

Now onto We3 and maybe sobbing.

Do you earn a page rate if all you do is illustrate a third of a page, copy it a couple times and tweak a single character's pose? It's not like that lack of dynamism is serving a purpose.
