120/144Hz Thread of Lightboosting Pixel Perfect Headshots

I'm really hoping a high quality 1080p/1200p G-sync monitor in the not too distant future. The AOC monitor seems like a budget offer which may be the case with all non-1440p+ G-sync offerings. I just want to avoid the extra demand of high-res so my GPUs can focus on high fps but I'd still like good image quality.

Is there any 22' 1080p GSYNC monitor announced?
I cant find any info about gsync compatible products except for 4 ASUS monitors.

At 27" is it possible to get both Gsync and light boost? Or does such a monitor not exist?
Every monitor with G-Sync has an option for ULMB (ultra low motion blur), a strobing effect, which is what lightboost does as well. For now, they can not be active at the same time.

The XL2720T is a bit long in the tooth at this point. Still good, comparatively, but there's a number of newer monitors out there.

Check out BlurBusters.

The problem with variable light strobing is that you're basically introducing a variable brightness level. Even if you slowly increase the intensity of ULMB depending on the refresh rate, as blurbusters suggests, you're still looking at potentially large swings in brightness levels which might not look so good in practice.

I guess you could try and engineer every frame to a normalized brightness level, but I believe the amount of darkness that is added by ULMB would be variable based on how long it'll be before the next strobe of light, so because you don't know how bright to make the strobe until you know how long it will be until the next refresh, you have to add a frame of input lag into the equation, which is a pretty significant drawback that they'd probably never allow.

It just doesn't seem possible to me to combine Gsync with lightboosting as we know it.

Yep. I don't think strobing and variable will ever really be a thing and if it is, it will be way too dark to be worth using.

Have you used a 27" 1080p monitor? IMO, pixel density is a bit low at that size. I suppose I'd recommend the VG278HE, but would really advise one of the 24" monitors.

I use an ASUS vk278 now. Its 27" 1080p. I like the screen size but honestly I have never used a 24". Not sure how I would feel using a smaller screen.

I got a BenQ XL2411Z a few days ago and I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep it.

What I like:
- Good price ($230 CAD)
- Works great in FPS games, like Quake Live
- Colours are decent

What I don't like:
- Sometimes doesn't show DVI signal when I boot my PC? Might be really annoying long term.
- Bad menus, takes like 15-20 sec to switch from 'standard' to 'FPS' (game mode)
- No speakers
- Not G-Sync, but obviously that's not a knock against the monitor...

My old monitor is a 24" 1920x1200 60Hz TN panel. I like it, but I've had it over 5 years and was thinking of getting something new (either with G-Sync, 144Hz, or higher res/IPS).

Ideally I would get a G-Sync IPS panel and an Nvidia card (I have a 6950 right now), but it might be a long while before they are prevalent and cheap enough, which is why I was thinking of going with this kind of cheap stopgap. I'm really undecided right now, as the dislikes could be really annoying to live with.

Any thoughts?

1) Start using displayport.

2) Nothing announced for IPS/G-Sync. IPS is supposedly really hard to bin quality crystal that can reliably withstand high refresh rates. I'd say the likelihood of anything coming within the next year is basically not happening, and doubtful even 24 months out.

Suggestion would be to possibly consider the EIZO Foris FG2421.

Additionally, there was a 120Hz 1440p IPS panel announced, but it isn't G-Sync.

No displayport on the XL2411Z I'm afraid, just the XL2420Z. I ended up returning the monitor tonight, maybe I will just stick with my current monitor for now. The fact that it didn't turn on half the time (with DVI, which is the only port that can do 144Hz on it) was the real killer for me. I googled a lot but couldn't find any definitive answers.

After going back to my old monitor though, I can see how the colors on the BenQ were pretty good. It's a shame the G-Sync pick-up might/will be slow.

Maybe I should get a 970 to tide me over. :p

Wow. I never realized the XL2411Z didn't have displayport. I'm sorry for your misfortune but you just helped me scratch that monitor off my wishlist. I was debating between that and the Asus VG248QE. I'm firmly in the Asus camp now as that has displayport.

Aye. The lack of DP didn't bother me, as it made the monitor fairly cheap. Don't write off the XL2420Z though, it's basically the 2411 but with DP and a few minor things.

Yeah. For an $80 premium :(

I'm not planning on getting anything until Jan (bonus time) so perhaps the other Gsync enabled monitors will start dropping. Looking specifically for the AOC one and a 24" BENQ one.

I really can't see myself spending more than $300 for a monitor.

ASUS seems to fit the bill nicely.

If you're interested, try skimming this review. It's very comprehensive.

Okay Lightboost thread. Help me out. I'm going crazy trying to find the ASUS ROG Swift, and have started weighing up other options. 4K even with gsync is out of the question because I want 3D and ULMB (aka lightboosting).

It basically boils down to 1080p now, for $200 less with something like the Acer XB270H, or 1440p for $200 more and a small amount of hair pulling.

I have the PC to comfortably handle 1440p at high framerates (3x GTX 980 SLI with an Intel 5930K), if that's relevant.

Are there any models I'm overlooking? Am I just getting too impatient, or am I being too insistent on having the best?

What say you? Which way should I go with this?

$1650 in GPUs and you don't want a monitor more than $400?

http://www.frys.com/product/8237286?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

You can buy it, and it'll ship within two weeks.

The three I have been considering were $600 for one and $800 for the other two.

Thank you so much for making up my mind.

I checked Frys earlier and couldn't find it listed. I hadn't found anywhere even taking back orders. If they actually ship this in a couple of weeks, I will be *very* happy.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, I get it now :P

But yeah. Put those 980s to use. You want 1440p unless you primarily play competitive games.

I came here to ask which one to buy, the XL2411z (AU$399) or the XL2420z ($429) or the VG248QE ($449) so its just between the last two models then.

Can anyone comment on the two latter models?

I will probably just go the VG248QE given a lot of people are happy with them. I wonder if the GSync models will be coming anytime soon. They said it was going to come first half of the year and there's still nothing about it in Australia.

Also the 27' version of the Asus I think the model number is VG278QE is just $20 more.... really tempting but the 1080p resolution on that model is holding me back. I think the 24' is plenty of room and the PPI will be much better.

27' 1080p PPI = 81.59
24' 1080p PPI = 91.79

Has anyone gone from a 27 1080 60hz to a 24 1080 144hz, would it be worth it to lose the screen size? I think that 27 1080p has a perfectly fine image quality

I was thinking about the rog swift, but I only have a single 970. Would I have to buy another 970 just to have a decent gaming experience? Anyone running a single 970 with an ROG?

I do like idea that the ROG swift is almost future proof, or should for the next few months to pass to let the dust settle?

We are in the same exact boat. I am looking at High frame rate (with light boost) > Low response time > 1440p > Screen size (looking for 27").

I have owned a 27" 1080p 60hz monitor for a few years now and I am happy with it but I really want to light boost and get rid of motion blur. 1440p would be nice also but the RoG Swift is out of my price range and I also do not know how a single 970 would be with it.

Right now I am between these: BenQ XL2720T, ASUS ROG Swift, ASUS VG278HE, or Philips 272G5DYEB.

Why are you looking into 24" from 27"?

Asked in the PC Build thread, but maybe I'll get better luck here:

I decided to finally get around to installing GSYNC on my Asus VG248, but apparently those kits were a limited time thing? Nvidia's site doesn't even have them listed anymore.

Am I completely boned here, or does anyone know a way to get hold of one?

In the UK but don't mind importing.

Just looking into it, after doing some browsing I'm very close to getting an acer xb270h, but there are no reviews from trusted sites

27 inch 1080p 144hz gsync TN and it's 10% off on newegg right now

Fuck's sake! I didn't win the auction for the FG2421, that was my best chance to get a kickass monitor for a really good price. I've sent a message to the seller asking if they'll be selling more but I'm not optimistic. :(

Nice. Also for $200 more (33% more) you can get the ROG Swift that adds 1440p and Ultra Low Motion Blur.

Loving the ROG Swift so far, especially with Shadow of Mordor, G-sync really is the shit. With a single 970 and everything on Ultra (except textures) I get between 50-65 fps but its all silky smooth with no stuttering or tearing, ever. Before I'd always have Fraps running and constantly going into the options screen to get a steady framerate but with G-sync it turns the PC into more of a locked console experience. Just get your settings between 45-60+ fps and enjoy the butter.

What's weird though is when I play in SLI using the FEAR 3 profile I get alot chop and stutter even though my framerate is higher. My frames average in the high 80's and 90's but when the action gets crazy it drops to the 40's and 50's which causes alot of stuttering and hitching. I'm not sure if this is a G-sync limitation because the frames vary so wildly or just a lack of proper SLI drivers for Mordor. The game plays much more smooth with G-sync on a single 970.

I got my new acer 1080p gsync

I'm not sure on the verdict

I having this issue with "color tinting" and another issue with some ghosting

Is gsync automatic?

EDIT: scratch that above, I turned on some stupid "extreme" setting on the monitor itself

You turn it on in your graphics card drivers, then you *disable* vsync in game. That should be all you need do.

Don't scare me man, because I have the Acer arriving tomorrow!

Just saw your edit...

THANK FUCK.

Bro, I almost started an RMA up, until I turned that stupid setting off

I'm testing all my games and I'm a believer!

There's a couple of 24" 144hz g-sync monitors on the horizon. One from BENQ and one from Viewsonic.

http://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/list-of-gsync-monitors/

No idea on release date yet :(

Provided I get my bonus this year I'm going to be looking for a g-sync 24" at the beginning of the year as well. So I'm in the same boat!

Wow that BENQ XL2420G is exactly what I'm looking for. Here's hoping it comes out soon
and that i have the money for it

EDIT: Are all G-Sync monitors Nvidia 3D ready?
